Twin-like, slightly stiffer in the tail, with binding mounts set up for a hint of set back (ride mine centred tho'). Buttering on the nose is no prob, slightly more effort needed on the tail. Whilst being 'only' moderately stiff, I found this board would charge the piste really quickly with no evidence of chatter. Part of this might have been the confidence I got from the board - it never feels like it's going to throw you off. Hell I even carved it switch! Surperb in pow, it floats like polystyrene. Strong pop from the stiffened tail, it behaves in the park, spins and slides almost as well as my park boards and the limitation is me, not the board.
Cool restrained graphics for the 'ahem' more mature rider, it looks the biz.
Rapid base, just a great allround board |
|
| Strengths |
| Looks, fast base, forgiving, floaty, easy to ride quick, loves the park, loves the pow, loves the piste, loves the rider.... |
|
| Weaknesses |
| Personally, I would like equal flex in nose and tail, but I'm thinking like a freestyler |

After riding my option franchise all the 09 summer season in New Zealand, I fancied a bit of a change and a new all mountain stick was on the cards, I wanted something a bit more playful and slightly softer than my option. So did my research and decided i wanted to go with something with a rocker and narrowed it down to either:
Never Summer SL-R K2 Turbo Dream Nitro Team Gullwing
So read up on reviews about all three and people were singing the praises of the SL-R so i got in touch with Kieth at Extreme-Powder and he sorted me out with a 09/10 158 SL-R, I was like a kid waiting for christmas and when it came i took it up to my local dome and had a go and the board did not disappoint it just felt so effortless to ride, responsive and forgiving at the same time.
I got to try it out properly last week in Trysil Norway and all I can say is WOW what a board, it just gives you so much confidence to push the limits i found myself going much quicker than ever before on a board and when you get a little out of shape through the lumpy stuff its so easy to correct, with the rocker you just put your weight to the back foot, the nose pops up an you cruise through usually sketchy terrain.
the mixture of rocker and camber means initiating turns is so easy and you can link turns together so quickly and easily its unreal! The vario side cut makes it much easier to ride on icier surfaces and it grips really well. I was expecting the rocker and camber to make carving more difficult but it carved like a dream like the board was on rails!
you can definitely ride this board shorter my old option was 161 and this 158 felt great and not too short at all, rode it in a bit of pow and it felt great!
the rocker gives you so much confidence you never feel like your going to catch and edge and you feel like you can ride away from some sketchy landings which you'd usually have crashed and burned!
I coupled this board with Rome Targas and Union Forces, i have to say the Targas and the slr where a killer combo, hands down best setup i have ever ridden, amazing board, if your thinking about and all mountain board get one of these it won't disappoint and you cant argue with a 3 year guarantee!
This board can take on anything you throw at it, its the only board you need for all mountain thrills!

I have never been a fan of Reverse camber boards for general all-mountain use... or at all really, so i was interested to try a variation on the theme that involved camber. I got a chance to try the Never Summer SL-R when as a group of bored Instructors we all swapped boards for a morning. One run and I was sold! I have ridden mine for 20 odd days so far and it will get another 100 days of use this season, so the 3 year warranty was of interest. The board seems to me to be the perfect combo of camber/reverse camber for my needs, with rev camber between the feet and cambered tip and tail... it does look pretty funky when you look down its length! How did it ride? Like a lively cambered board with a looser more forgiving feel. Edge to edge was super quick without feeling as though it was waiting for you to make a mistake and get spanked. Buttering was fun and easy, the board was a real quiver killer. I have ridden it in 5 different resorts in everything from knee deep powder to ice to VW beetle-sized moguls and it ruled supreme. In fact in 25 years of riding this is one of the best boards I have EVER ridden. In the past I have gone for pretty torsionally stiff boards, but this is pretty twisty, yet edge grip doesn't really seem to suffer much. The Vario Sidecut equates to a 7.5m sidecut so is very tight turning and super grippy and the mid-stiffness torsionally allows you to really use your feet to steer the board at slower speeds or in steep/tight situations. I should point out that at 155cm, this is the shortest board I have ridden since the Morrow Lunchtray/Hot Double Zero, yet it coped with knee-deep powder with ease... due to the reverse camber section, I barely had to adjust when on the steep Puma Bowl off Jupiter Peak @ Park City. It rides really well in the Park, carves like a demon, great for flatland, superb in bumps and really, really nice to ride. What more can I say? |
|
| Strengths |
-Amazing all rounder -can be ridden short -super agile -really quick edge-to-edge -3 year warranty -really easy at slow speeds -best board in bumps I have ever ridden -forgiving in the park. |
|
| Weaknesses |
| At 40mph+ can get a little squirrely when running flat, moreso on uneven ground (reverse camber can cause it to wander) than on hardpack, but cured by getting back on an edge... |
