| Great for intermediate and beginner piste bashers. For the more adventurous, there are a number of recognised off piste routes which offer epic fun, without having to hike in! The X3,4,5 routes end with you entertaining the guests at the bar at the foot of the slope. The bar provides an excellent denoument to your last off-piste adventure, before taking the last gondola down |

| Strengths |
Great snow, excellent beginner off-piste and more.. Greta vibe at the bar with some whacky continental exhibitions to keep us Brits intrigued. Good vfm, would happily go there again and again |
|
| Weaknesses |
| You can't ride to the village - the cliffs get in the way, so you have to get the bus back |

Got there late because of problems at the airport so didn't see much till morning. Got up on the first day to loads of snow.
There are only 2 chairs that take you to the top of the mountain in Kprun. Nice runs thru the trees, with a mixture of blue, red and short blacks. Theres also a big area for beginners.
It keep snowing for another 2 days. Which ment that the off piste was fantastic. All tho by the end of the week it was quite hard due to the freezing temperatures at night.
Zell em see was only a 15 minute bus ride away, with plenty of runs to offer all levels. If you get the all lifts pass this covers the bus as well. The bus also goes round Kaprun from the Beginner area to the Main Chair Lift.
The Glasier is in the other direction and offer's great boarding as well. there is also a great board park, half pipe and big air jumps.
The Guest house i stayed in was a good 15 minute walk to the lifts. But it was a good warm up in the morning. There was a bus stop just outside if you want to use it aswell.
I would recommed it to everyone. |

it snowed 35cm the week we went so snow was fresh and cool but not say really powder. The efficiency of all the public transport in austria maid the trip there a stress free enjoyment. The absolute fun of travelling up around 10am and boarding for three-four hours then down into hot summer days with zell am see lake near by odd but really good. The quiet nights were nice this time as the town was so quiet would have been nice to have some people there to party with. |

I spent last weekend in Kaprun with 8 mates, we booked it DIY-style (flights on Ryanair, car hire with Hertz and a B&B booked via the tourist office) a fortnight before! I've been to Kaprun before (see below) and the snow looked great, with 44cms during the week running up to our trip.
Accommodation ------------------- Pension Eschenhof (http://www.pensioneschenhof.net) 28euros pppn for B&B It was located a little way out of town (towards the Kitzsteinhorn), about a 15-20min walk to the centre with the bars and a 3min walk to the free skibus stop. For the price it was very nice, all rooms were ensuite and most of them had a balcony.
Nightlife ---------- Due to a late flight and a very busy car rental office we didn't get to Kaprun until after midnight on the Friday so just went to bed, but we made the most of our Saturday and Sunday nights! Saturday we went to the restaurant at the Baum Bar (all the way at the other end of town) much against my advice (see my previous review) because some of our party had spoken to a couple of German guys and had heard that there were "Russian ladies" there! The meal was very nice, but service was a bit slow. After dinner we went next door to the Baum Bar, it was deserted, with sh*te music playing and they still wanted to charge entrance fee and forcible cloakroom charge. At this point I finally managed to persuade everyone to leave! We went back towards the centre of town and had a beer in the Kitsch n Bitter, which was cool in an apres-ski kinda way but was rammed. We then went next door to a bar called Killys which was much more stylish and laid back. On the Sunday night, we went to the Fun Pub which was empty and had a couple of pool tables, a Sega Rally, electronic darts and a barman who insisted on giving a free round of shots with every order! This would cause problems later on for some of our party who had too many Jaegerbombs (mini bottle of Jaegermeister in a glass of Red Bull) and Stros (80% rum)! We ate at the restaurant in the Kitsch n Bitter and drank far too much (which led to some of the party going to the Baum Bar for late night foolish dancing!).
Conditions ------------ It snowed continuously for the week prior to arrival and didn't stop until the Sunday night! This meant that Saturday and Sunday were a bit overcast with patchy visibility, but meant that there was stacks of powder everywhere! Monday was a gorgeous bluebird day which summed up everything I love about boarding!
Lift pass ---------- 34euros per day for a pass that covers Kaprun and Zell am See
Runs ------ We spent Saturday and Monday in Kaprun and Sunday in Zell am See. We preferred Kaprun because it was quieter, the snow was better and there were no tedious cat tracks.
The only weakness with Kaprun is that you can't ski down to the resort from the Kitzsteinhorn (you can from the smaller mountain (Maiskogel) but we didn't ride there). Recommended runs are:
Kaprun - Kitzsteinhorn: Blue no. 4 - very wide piste between two big t-bars, great for bombing it down Unpisted red from Gletscherbahne 2 gondolda to Gletscherbahne 1 gondola - this was the best run I've ever done in my life, lovely rolling hills, stacks of powder and a natural halfpipe at the end. We did this run all afternoon on Monday, I couldn't get enough of it! Red runs from the top of the chairlift that starts at the AlpinCenter - these were great, and you could fly off into the untracked powder at the side of the runs. We spent a great morning flying up and down it, using a blue cat track that carves across to launch ourselves off into the air (before crashing into the powder)!
Zell am See By far our favourite area was the Sonnalm section on the right of the mountain, some great red runs there, again with loads of powder everywhere. Only downside was that the runs from the Schmittenhohe down to the top of the Sonnalm section were a bit miserable, with lots of skating, very strong winds and non-existent visibility. Down in the Sonnalm section we were nicely sheltered from the winds. |
|
| Strengths |
Conditions - I've been to Austria 3 times now (twice to Kaprun) and have always had great snow Nightlife - low-key but cool Runs - nice runs and nothing to stop you dropping off the side into the masses of powder |

While staying in Kitzbuhel in July we decided to have our first days boarding on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier at Kaprun.
It had been a few years since we last boarded here and it had infact been a short while before the disaster with the fire on the funicular when a lot of people died. The track is still there but the tunnel entrance into the mountain has been blocked up.
The drive from Kitzbuhel takes you over the Thurn pass and down to Mittersill from where you head on towards Kaprun and up to the car park. It took us just over an hour to get there.
The Kitzsteinhorn was originally Austrias first glacier skiing region about 30 years ago.
The lifts open at 8am and there are two parallel gondolas (Gletscherjet 1 and Panoramabahn) from the car park that take you up to the first station at Langweid which is at 1976m. From there a 2nd stage gondola or a quad chair (Winter only) take you up to the Alpincentre (restaurant, toilets, shop) at 2452m.
On our visit in July you could ride all the way down as far as here from where you can either take the large Gipfelbahn cable car to the top station at 3029m or you can take the Gratbahn chair from where a couple of easy ,gentle runs on a decent covering of snow take you back down to the Alpincentre.
When you get up to the very top and get out of the cable car you have to then go down a few steps and get onto a short funicular railway (Gletscher shuttle) which takes you down to the Summer Ski/Board area.
There are about half a dozen drag lifts operating up here and the runs are mostly short and gentle but there are a couple of more challenging runs up towards the Maurerkogel peak.
There was a deserted fun park and when we went to take a closer look it was because the snow was so slow and heavy you could not get enough approach speed to any of the obstacles.
This was my first days boarding since i had my knee operation back in May and i was pleased to find that it was giving me no problems. We cruised around the slopes for a couple of hours then headed up onto the ridge below the impressive Kitzsteinhorn peak (3203m) to eat our packed lunches. There are some great views from up here looking towards Austrias highest peak the Grossglockner (3797m) and another 20 or so peaks over 3000m.
We spent another hour or so boarding before getting the cablecars back down to the base area and the car park. Down at the bottom it was a really warm sunny day as we got changed. We decided to go down to Zell am See and take a walk along the lake and have a bite to eat before heading back to Kitzbuhel via Saalfelden,Leogang and one of the prettiest villages in the Alps - Fieberbrunn.Back in Kitzbuhel it was 30c when we parked the car outside the Hotel next to the Schwarzee lake.
I had really enjoyed my day out to Kaprun and felt satisfied and confident that my knee was going to stand up to some more serious boarding in the next few days and in the Months ahead.
Sitting out on our balcony that evening with a few cold beers i really did think that the World was a great place. |
