Nice resort, about 250 kms of piste, we were there in Dec and just after they opened, Christmas Eve 2005. The resort is quite spread out, but still nice. Lots of very wealthy peeps who are more there to realx than to board/ski, which is great means the slopes aren't to crowded.
Comparing Gstaad on Christmas Eve to Villars on boxing day Gstaad was quiet.
We ate at a small resaurant at the top of Eggli. Cool little restaurant pumping out Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business!
We found some nice off-piste, but there are also a few button bars that weren't great!
Lots of ladies in Fur with over sized glasses! |

The ski area of Gstaad isn't particulary big, but one ski pass covers several small ski areas, some of which are linked, others are accessible by a train which links all of the villages in the valley.
In good conditions the area would keep you entertained for a few days, and the entire ski area would keep you busy for at atleast a couple of weeks if you include all the mounains covered by the pass.
The snow was not particulary good the day I went (dec 2003), but I'm told it can be quite good later on in the season.
There are loads of little bars on the slopes which provide you with a welcome pit stop, but are guilty of blasting out europop cheese at full volume. Stilll some nice places to sit and warm yourself up with a gluwein.
The best skiiing in this area is in Sannenmoser, which is about 2 stops down from Gstaad on the train. Here the area is much bigger, with long runs, and loads of off piste to be had. It was not crowded at all, and even though I went up in the afternooon, there was still fresh tracks to be had.
The actual town of Gstaad at the base of the slopes is bling bling ville. The place is full of ridiculsly rich people, and the prices of everything, from beer to boards reflects this. Some of the bars there, such as Hush (formally owned by Roger Moors son) are super exclusive hang outs, so dont even think about getting a drink there unless you want to remorgage your house: a bottle of wine costs 100 pounds upwards, and a magnum of the finest champagne will set you back 14,000 pounds. Yes, 14 grand. Even a small glass of beer at a less exclusive bar will cost you a fiver plus.
So, it kind of goes without saying, that the apres ski here is heavy on the wallet. A better idea is to head to a bar in aonther town, such as Chateau D oex, or Sannenmoser, where the prices are still high, but not quite as bad as Gstaad.
All the villages in this area are beautiful, full of charming wooden chalets. |

OK ski area,
Lots of cool little bars on the slopes
Sannnenmoser is the best ski area in the vicinity.
Like almost all Swiss resrots, the architecture is beautiful, all rustic wooden chalets. |

| Weaknesses |
Town of Gstaad is ridiculously pricey, cos it's home to the rich and famous, everything is a total rip off.
Forget about buying anything here, and head for another town near by. Overall Switzerland is more expensive than most resorts in France or Austria. |
