Champery is one of those resorts that's a town first and a resort second as you have to get a telepherique up to the Croix de culet and at the end of the day use it to get back down again.
Once you are up at the croix, the worl really is your oyster in the Portes de soleil, where you can choose either to stay local in the excellent Crosets area and park. Avoriaz is just a short lift away up the Mossettes chairlift.
Champery town has a wealth of bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes. Mitchells on the hill does decent food although some dishes can be pricey, has good beer and great views. The Guellhi next to the train station is great for a post riding, pre dinner pint and surf as it has free wifi. Other restaurants in the town do decent fare and you could even barbeque at your table if you opt for the charbonnade.
Champery town has not got the kicking nightlife that some may be after but it's a great town with excellent services and links to other places. |

| Strengths |
Quiet town Good restaurants - no need to eat in the same place twice. Cracking accommodation Quick transfers from Geneva, almost door to door. A train ride will get you into Monthey for a cracking lunch and bit of shopping if you fancy a day off if the weather conditions are poor |

| Hot Spots |
The Guellhi Mitchells ;) Quiet lifts - no crazy crush for the lift in the morning |
|
| Weaknesses |
May be quiet for some - didn't bother me, but needs noting Not a "ski resort" in the strictest sense of the word Cable car may be closed in high winds |

| This is a very quiet resort, very pretty and linked into the Portes Du Soleil. Not much apres-ski going on but a few good (if quiet) bars around. Its good because it's only about 2 chairlifts away from Avoriaz so you are basically there all of the time. Pretty good snow record and good access from Geneva (about 1 hour ish). A good resort for the older boarder (as I'm now rapidly becoming) and to have a good chill with friends after a hard day. |

| Strengths |
Good links into Avoriaz+Portes Du Soleil. Friendly villiage. Near to Geneva. No lift queues out of season (if at all). |
|
| Hot Spots |
| Auberge Du Grand Paridis (English run hotel with a good bar and a fairly eccentric owner who is a friend of mine). |
|
| Weaknesses |
| Very quiet apre-ski. |

This was my first boarding holiday. I had had 6 hours group lessons on a dryslope before flying out for 10 days in Champery. We went in a group of 8 in feb 2003.
The resort is quiet, apres ski is quiet, theres a couple of clubs and plenty of bars but they dont ever have many people in them.
Board hire is cheap and plentiful, ski pass is about £20 per day and it covers the whole Portes du Soleil.
Theres a mix of drag and chair lifts.
Theres a lack of beginner runs and plenty of runs with flat bits in that cause issues for beginner snowboarders.
There really is no beginner slope, the easiest is the blue at the top of the cable car but even that run is daunting.
I would recommend for intermediates but not beginners. |
