A group of 5 of us had one of our best snowboarding holidays in Bansko and I would recomend it to anyone who wants to try something away from the norm.

We stayed at Hotel Lion and couldnt believe our luck when we turned up. 4 star accomodation with fantastic modern rooms (very large - could have housed a board park!) The food was good and it was good to see no Macdonalds in a resort! The pool and sauna were also good after a long day boarding and if you like a plunge pool this was great after the sauna.

The main gondola station was literally only 5mins away from the hotel (wearing snowboarding boots - I expect longer in those weird things skiers wear on their feet!) Brilliant runs for all and fantastic powder upto your knees was awesome for us boarders. Tree lined runs were great also.

The people in Bansko were friendly and we coudnt believe how cheap food and drink was even at the hotel. My boyfriend and I only spent £70 between us.Good food available on the mountain.

The journey from the airport was fairly long but adventourous especially in a mini bus! Anyone who has made the trip will mention the pot holes so have your body armour to hand! But this added to the fun.

Im not sure how geared up BANSKO is for families but us 4x20 something ( and one 30x something) had a brillaint time both on the slopes and chilling at the hotel or in the local karaoke bar.
Strengths
brilliant powder, great lifts and great hotel (Hotel Lion). Excellent value for money and not busy with 'all the gear and no idea' sort.
Hot Spots
Hotel Lion and karaoke bar opposite hotel. You must meet the donut man as you get off the main gondola located on the main road - best chocolate donuts in the world - 15 for £1.00
Weaknesses
long transfer but same for most places you go in the mountains

I was in bansko for a week in march 2006 with 4 others. We stayed at the hotel lion which

was a 4 star hotel about 15/10mins form the gondola.

the whole resort has seen alot of investment in the last 5 years the pistes all have new and

for the most part quick lifts and not many (if any??) drag lifts. there are hardly any flat

spotS so it is i would say geared toward the boarder. in terms of abilty this is definetly a

resort for first timers to intermediate for anyone above this the pistes will offer little

or no challenge. The blacks are a french blue or red at the very most. I and 2 of my friends

are a mix of intermediate boarders and by mid week had started venturing off piste to fill

our time. For the beginner tho the everything seemed very well suited and the lessons where

very cheap.

down at the bottom of the moutain around the gondola the whole place is a building site and

not very arractive to the eye. when coming to bankso from the airport (about a 4 hours drive

on a bus) you are immediately reminded bulgria is a very poor country nearly all roads we

went on were in a very delapidated state. We also had trouble with the food all of us by the

end of the week had the squits. on the piste nearly all the fastfood was the same generic

meat (using the term loosely) formed in to different shapes and called sauages, burgers

kebabs etc etc.

i enjoyed the holiday and the place does what it says on the tin - cheap snowboarding holiday!
and great for a learner with a strong gut!
somewhere to go in a couple of years when the resort catches up with the development of the pistes
Strengths
very cheap booze and food and lessons and hire
good infrastructure on piste
not many flatspots
Hot Spots
if you get lots of snow there is a run going from the first stop on the gondola (that you dont normaly get off at) going down to near the bottom - hardly anyone uses it
Weaknesses
the resort/town - food - variety/ability level of pistes
