I visited this resort after a recomendation from Sunday broadsheet. What swayed my decision was the amount of Spa/Health facilities the reort claimed to offer, and with a better half not particually interested in the activities which require wood strapped to your feet I thought this would prove ample passtime for her.

Getting to the resort from Salzburg airpot was trouble free and quick. The resort is typically Austrian but without the commercial hype. Quiet, peaceful and secluded yet friendly and warming would be my description of the little town center, people and resort ammenities.

Most hotels offer a large array of spa and health treatments, even the most hardcore of boarder can appreciate the hot tubs after a hard day on the slopes.

In the town, the apparently infamous, spa complex stands proud in the square. Offering more treatments and facilities than you can shake a stick at and all at competitive prices. Children appeared well catered for here too.

And now about the slopes. A good range for a weekend, if you are staying longer than 3/4 days then I would suggest upgrading your ticket to cover the whole of the Gastein valley. A large selection of slopes to cover all skills are on offer and when I visited, all lifts were in full operation from morning to suprisingly late at night. With a imaginative use of the slopes you can create some quite technical and demanding lengthy runs from top to bottom where you can relax while taking the two seated cable cars back up.

I'm not sure what this resort would be like for learners, there were certainly a good few gentle slopes that learners could use. Advanced boarders may struggle to find something that will entertain them for longer than a day but there may be more to offer further up the valley (I didnt get to use the 'park' this time round).

I am back in Bad Hofgastien Feb 2006. I seriously enjoyed my first visit to this resort as did my g/f and the the other boader that joined us.
Strengths
friendly service
good lifts
varied slopes
not busy
Hot Spots
The main Spa Center
The two slopes either side of the very top cable car
Weaknesses
Navigating the one way streets to your hotel car park.

This was my first time on snow, and unfortunately i was on two planks not one. i think i went in 1996/97 to learn to ski and i totally loved it!
things i remember include:
1. thinking that the skiable area was huuge, but i was a beginner tho.
2. getting into the 'nite klubz' even tho i was only a little 14 yr old.
3. also, getting quite drunk at said 'klub' and pulling some young english hottie/sl*g (is ok she was also 14!)
Strengths
big ski area, i think
close to salzburg
easy english school girls (n.b. not promoting that kind of thing)
Hot Spots
eh, can't remember
Weaknesses
pricey??
wasn't many boarders about, altho was near ten years ago
