Lesson number five: Why does it take so long to learn snowboarding?

Whether you are learning your first turns, or you first 360, it can take longer than you anticipated.

Even when you have the highest qualified teacher; so many people take so long to learn even the simplest of tasks. The teacher will of course make more money from this as you come back session after session for more training.

Even if you think you have done well, you could have done much better, much quicker.
What is turning down a slope, spinning around, sliding down pieces of metal, and carving fresh lines? Its not actually that complex, if I ask you to jump up now and spin round 360 without a board on your feet; you probably could without knowing what technicalities are occurring inside your body.

Technicalities are great for breaking down the movement and refining towards perfection, however ignoring our fears mean less progress is made.

Habitually we tend to avoid fear, including your teacher/coach. Sure they might be pulling a sweet 5 or whatever, without flinching; however step inside their mind the moment they fall over while demonstrating a basic turn. They have a fear of what others think of them.

Your teacher has learnt all the technique, but spent about an hour studying sports psychology, and little or no time learning how humans effectively deal with fear. Rarely a teacher will be able to deal with the depths of fear or explain an individual process for their clients.

At snowboard guru we show our clients how to deal with the very essence of their individual fears, we share our methods openly through our blog, facebook pages, and soon on you tube. We offer this freely in order to advance the sport through higher conscious teaching and learning. We also arrange one 2 one Skype coaching sessions via wifi or 4g. You can join us in Chamonix France, or request our presence anywhere in the world.

Whether your next lesson is with the snowboard guru, another teacher, or you are another teacher, check out our latest blog for a deeper look at fear: http://snowboardguru.org/
