Members of the Boardplay Project, the n.asa and Volkl Snowboards joined forces to organize the Mountain Cleaning Day, together with students of Westendorf High School.

The troops headed to the Boarders Playground Park and scoured a 2.5 kilometer route of hiking trails and slopes to clear rubbish – including cigarette butts, plastic, aluminium cans and glass bottles – which they collected, separated and recycled.

Once the clean up operation has finished, the entire crew were invited for a BBQ on the mountain and were given the chance to win some awesome prizes in a quiz about recycling.

Alpine tourism can create quite a lot of rubbish on the beautiful slopes. Plastic needs an average of 100 to 1,000 years to completely decompose, glass almost 4,000 years and chewing gum one to three years. A single cigarette butt contaminates at least 200 to 1000 liters of groundwater and decomposes after one to five years.

With facts like those, you can see why events such as the Mountain Cleaning Day are so important!
