World Cup Alpine snowboarding veteran Adam Smith has decided to retire from top-class competition.
Smith will officially call it a day after the conclusion of the 2010 season, although he is leaving the sport on a high, having achieved two Top 10 finishes during the past season.

Speaking about his impending retirement, Smith was in contemplative mood:

"Over the last 10 to 12 years, I've made some amazing friends on the road.

"But all the world travel, seeing new and exciting places and learning new cultures is probably the biggest thing I'm going to miss."

Smith's career path is an interesting one, with the rider developing a passion for the sport at only nine years of age - something which led him towards a glittering 20-year association with competitive riding.

In two decades, Smith collected plenty of silverware, including four World Cup podiums, a fourth at the World Championships in Whistler, and a US Alpine Snowboarding Slalom Championship in 2003.

Smith reveals he plans to take a more relaxed approach to life now he is leaving the sport:

"I'm going to stay here, take a break, relax and enjoy a real winter of riding Mt. Bachelor back at home.

"I just bought a house, which is a huge a step and crazy. I'm going to just slow it down a bit, do the real job thing for awhile and see how that goes."
