The moment Billy Morgan burst into public consciousness last month was easily one of the most defining moments in UK snowboarding history.

Morgan's achievement in becoming the first rider to throw down a triple rodeo stunned the rest of the world. Emerging from obscurity, Morgan made major news networks all over the planet suddenly sit up and take notice.

Word Bobby Davis
No sooner had Morgan hit the headlines, another youngster from Britain made the record books. Sixteen year-old Calum Paton jibbed an incredible 78 metres (259.5 feet) down a custom-built rail at Sno!Zone snow dome in Milton Keynes, beating the previous record set by Spain's Alejandro Benito back in 2009 by a gargantuan ten metres.

These incredible feats have drawn more attention to the UK scene from global action sports media, and both riders are being touted as the stars that will put firmly Britain among the elite snowboarding nations. Morgan and Paton are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the few riders from Britain whose shredding skills are recognised as world-class.

One example the two starlets will aim to follow is that of Dom Harington. Harington has made great strides in the last few years, and the adidas rider has risen to become a contender in every competition he enters. Arguably his defining moment came back in 2008, when he snatched victory in the halfpipe event at the prestigious FIS European Cup.

Harington has often been something of a lone wolf in the past, and at times has been single-handedly leading the charge to bring success to UK snowboarding. The emergence of Morgan and Paton will certainly take some of the pressure off Harington.

Despite Christmas being well and truly over, the season to be jolly is right now. 2011/12 is shaping up to to be one of the most memorable yet. There's never been a better time to be a rider from these shores...
