The Snowboarder’s Bucket List – North American resorts to board before you die

Whether it’s challenging off piste or wild après ski that interests you, there are more than a few resorts you just have to get to before your knees give out and you hang your board up for the last time. But how to choose? The big three resorts of Revelstoke, Big White, and Whistler all claim, with some justification, to be the best, leaving the virgin North American ski tourist somewhat perplexed as to which to choose. Here we’ll tell you why we think you should choose all three.
Revelstoke

Let’s pretend that money is no object (this is a bucket list after all), the one thing that every snowboarder has to try at least once is heliboarding. It takes a lot to top being flown to pristine and untouched powder before taking on the ride of your life down the mountain. Revelstoke is known as a Mecca for heliboarders and it’s not surprising that there are quite a few heli-ski operators willing to take about $1000 of your hard earned cash to drop you off in the middle of 500,000 acres of bowls, glades, and glaciers.

The resort itself only opened for the 2007-2008 season but once skiers and boarders realized the amazing potential of this vast resort hotel and guest houses began popping up overnight, and now it’s one of the most popular resorts in North America.

In short – a once in a lifetime trip

Big White

Once thought of as Canada’s best kept secret, Big White has been slowly but surely gathering a reputation as the must board resort in North America. It’s been described as the world’s biggest skatepark covered in snow with more than its fair share of trees, so you can imagine how much fun snowboarders have there each season.

In recent years it has seen some huge investment with the TELUS terrain park the ruby in its crown. If you’re after some real serious freestyle action then Big White is definitely worth a look.

In short – freeriding and freestyle fit for the gods

Whistler

It’s often touted by boarders and skiers alike as the best resort they’ve ever skied and with good reason. Amazing free riding and an abundance of parks make for a boarder’s paradise. For this reason alone it’s a resort that any seasoned boarder worth his or her salt should have on their list.

The challenging terrain and the world’s finest parks and pipes also make this a really popular resort so unfortunately you may find yourself competing with hordes of day trippers out of Vancouver. But if the crowds don’t bother you and it’s a good party you’re after then try to get there during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival held every April.

The skiing masses aside though, Whistler which hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, is without doubt one of the finest resorts in the world, attracting seasonaires from all over the world willing to work for peanuts just to get that all important season pass.

In short – everything you could want from a resort

Now while it might seem like a good idea at the time we’re not suggesting that you remortgage your house and hit all three resorts in a single season. It’s worth taking the time to appreciate each resort in its own right, like we said earlier – this is a bucket list after all.
