The British Indoor Championships hit SNO!zone Castleford this weekend, Saturday 24th September, with over 120 competitors demonstrating that the UK can rival European riders in the jib department. The new format which offered a dedicated box line and rail line, with skiers and snowboarders running simultaneously, was a massive success: “It’s been the best Snow Tour in a long, long time. It’s been a brilliant atmosphere, the course was amazing and everyone’s really enjoyed it” said local rider and Snow Tour regular Simon Cudlip. The atmosphere was buzzing as the riders took to the immaculately shaped course to battle it out for the title of British Indoor Champion. Ultimately, it was Katie Ormerod and Danny McCormick for snowboard and Sissy Herant and Chris Wadsworth for ski, who dominated both the box and rail lines earning them the overall gold medals respectively.

In the women’s category, local rider Katie Ormerod captivated judges with her consistently solid and technical runs, taking home the title of women’s British Indoor Champion. 14 year-old Katie cemented her place on the podium with her winning runs that also earned her the title of Trespass Jib Master and Protest Rail Slayer. Showing why she’s tipped to be the next big name in UK snowboarding, Katie put in a solid run that included a frontside boardslide on the stairset, 5050 to frontside boardslide on the flat down rail, a front flip off the down box and a super stylee half cab to frontside boardslide on the flat down box. Continuing her comeback and following her win at The BRITS 2011, Laura Berry took second position with a solid run on the rail section which included a backside boardslide to 270-off and super smooth front 180-on to backside 360-off. Finishing in third place and riding stylishly all day was local rider 18 year-old Faye Young.

It was extremely close in the men’s finals with riders pushing hard and putting in some standout performances. First place went to Scottish ripper Danny McCormick with a super clean run that included a switch backside 270-on to the top box, backside 270 gap-on to the flat down box and a gap 270-on to the flat down rail, a run that also won him the title of Trespass Jib Master. Qualifying in first position and in spite of his impressive bag of tricks, local rider Simon Cudlip was just knocked in to second place with a near faultless run that included a backside 270-on to the stairset and a cab-on to front flip-off on the flat down box. In close third and putting in solid and stylish runs that earned him the title of Protest Rail Slayer was Yorkshire rider Sam Turnbull with a run that included a noseslide to pretzel on the stairset and switch frontside boardslide to 270-off on the down rail.
