Snowboarding with fear

Fear affects us all, wether we choose to accept, embrace, reject, or deny it. Next time you get a chance to feel fear try this:

Become aware and accept the feeling of fear, then ask yourself why? You might notice that while you are attempting to achieve a certain task while feeling fear that a list of mental excuses begin to form. Such as; I might fall over, I might die, people will think I’m ..????, it went wrong before, etc etc.

To start with begin the move you want to achieve, but don’t go through with it. Simply note what excuses your mind provides in response to this fear. Note how the body itself re-acts to fear also.

Once you have your list of excuses, deal with each one away from the task you are attempting. For example; you are scared of falling over after landing a large drop, you could practice falling over and different ways of falling safely on a smaller drop.

The common re-action to fear is tension, rigidity and resisting movements. If you think of what the body and mind are actually trying to do; the mind is trying to get a signal through to the body parts required to achieve whatever task you are attempting. When your mind has thoughts of un-known failures and excuses enter, it becomes more difficult to send a clear message through to the body of what is required to achieve the task.

So if you find your mind full of excuses when fear switches on then deal with them all until there are none. Then your mind will be clear and you will be better able to send messages between your mind and body to achieve any task.
