Scott Stevens and Jess Kimura visit Cab Five Newcastle

Its a chilly morning on November the 5th, and I’m shuffling past the O2 Academy towards the Cab Five snowboard store, tucked away behind Low Friar Street in the city centre. I’ve made the trip because 2 of Captia’s biggest hitters are going to be sitting in for an hour or so, signing posters and bathing in the adulation of Geordie snowboarders.

Words Joe taken from TheMeriBlogs
I’ve been buying gear from Cab Five for about a year, with my entire setup for the forthcoming season bought from the tiny shop on the banks for the Tyne. Without launching into a tirade against chains, having bought from Cab, you’ll not catch me getting anything from Surfdome in the future.

I’m there early and I get to chatting with the few bodies that are in the shop, as well as the owner, James. Talk is all snowboards, specifically the euphoric love James has for Capita’s new offering, The Defender of Awesome. In his defence (no pun intended), its an incredible bit of engineering, and maybe the most complete all-rounder available this year. Slowly but surely the shop fills, mostly with people that seem to know each other on first-name terms, and the conversation moves to the forthcoming trip to Cas Vegas and why £70 really isn’t that much to spend on gloves (its sounds it, but it’s really not).

When the door swings and the Union/Capita entourage arrive, all fall silent. Behind them appear the figures of Scott Stevens and Jess Kimura, smiling and looking a little road-weary. They make a b-line for the sofa and plant themselves behind a table of posters, and arm themselves with black and white sharpies. But there is little formality after that, and the buzz of conversation fires up again, and talk moves from one-footers to dry-slopes (Scott wants a go, and asks where the closest one is) to the Chinese buffet round the corner that they’re sizing up for the post-signing meal.

Ending the session, Jess is given the honour of picking raffle tickets out the hat for the Defender of Awesome that’s up for grabs. Bit by bit, the fans trickle out, followed by two snowboarders jonesing for dim sum and a bit of peace and quiet before the next appearance.

A visit worth the travel-time for me, and so it seemed for everyone else. Cab’s got a great feeling of community in it, and a store full of paying customers and friends is testament to it. I’d even go far as to say that the pros were just one part of the day, and the real stars were the customers and the environment James has made for them. But I won’t, because that’s horribly cheesy, and Capita kick ass.
