The Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters festival is the one weekend which really makes summer special for me every year, and once again the organisers ticked every box to make it officially one of the best weekends to hit the UK this year.

I'm mentally in a strange place right now – back at home, tired, slightly sunburnt, and in this bizarre state of manic comedown from what was such an immense weekend, while at the same time feeling pure elation at having been lucky enough to have had what I'd happily describe as one of the best weekends I've ever had.

The Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters festival is such a unique setup, bringing together the energy of thousands of people, and giving them a powerful injection of music, sport and art, in one of the most spectacular locations in the UK. What also makes the festival so unique is the two separate festivals in one package – with one based on Fistral beach, and the other up at Watergate Bay.

The Fistral Beach side alone encompasses everything that this festival means to me – with its mix of music, art and sport throughout the day. From early morning, right through into the evening, there's skate and BMX comps on the Vans Street Sessions course and ramps, there's the international surf competition, and acoustic music live on the beach bar. If that wasn't enough, there's an incredible art exhibition from the Looking Sideways crew, a retail village, and even a Flowrider to be able to try surfing yourself.

The Fistral Beach setup alone would keep everyone more than happy, but that's just the start of what the festival is about, with Watergate Bay providing a whole epic music festival from the afternoon through into the night. The lack of neighbours means it can go on through the night, and its unspoilt cliff-top location gives you one of the most amazing sunsets across the sea. The pure variety of music on offer across the weekend is incredible in itself, with the likes of Dizzie Rascal, Ed Sheeran, Zane Lowe and Young Guns playing alongside each other. I've always found the crowds who come to this festival are super relaxed and accepting of all music, so everyone gets the most out of the weekend, and feels the energy from all the performances. It means the vibe remains relaxed, and the whole crowd embraces everything on offer – something very rare to witness at festivals.

The Vans off the Wall stage provided punk rock and metal sounds to our ears, from the likes of While She Sleeps, Pulled Apart By Horses and Set Your Goals. The Desperados Vs FBBB tent was continually pumping all weekend, from the sounds of Duke and other immense DJ's, providing an immense soundtrack to the action on the skate ramp. The voices of Scott Penman and Lucas Brammall drew in the crowds, then the continual beats meant noone wanted to leave.

What's more, the sun was blazing all weekend, casting a golden glow across both festival sites, keeping the smiles fixed, and vibe chilled for everyone – whether they were watching sunsets from the Marley zone, enjoying a cider on the beach, riding the fairground, or soaking up the music.

Musically, Young Guns properly stole the show for me with their closing set on the Relentless Energy Sessions stage, providing me with a dose of those 'epic festival moment' shivers down my spine. While She Sleeps on the Vans stage were also super powerful, and the unwipeable smile on the faces of Set Your Goals really made that set stick with me. To watch every band truly enjoy themselves as much as every person in that crowd is something which really makes the Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters festival stand apart from every other festival. Everyone genuinely appreciates the talent the artists have – whether they're on stage, riding waves, building sculptures, or ripping the ramps – and not only appreciates it, but enjoys what's on offer too. The atmosphere and vibe across the festival sites is unparalleled, and everyone leaves Newquay just wanting more.

For me, I can't help but smile looking back on the weekend, as there was nothing the organisers could change to make it better. The music lineups, the surf, the sports, the vibe – everything was just right, and I not only believe the Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters festival gets better every year, but the energy and performances from all the athletes and artists truly evolves with the festival too. Bring on 2013.
