Here is a Q&A series we will be running with a range of instructor course companies! We know how important it is choosing the right type of course that suits you and to make sure the season you are doing if the best but also so show how each course company works but to also give you true career progression within this industry
GB: Who are Pro Ride?
Pro Ride: Pro Ride is a group of dedicated riders that live, eat and breathe snowboarding. Our coaches have been handpicked among some of the top sponsored riders, examiners and professional coaches in the sport, guaranteeing the best training and experience in the industry.

We are also quite unique in Whistler as the only company that specialises in snowboard only programs run “by snowboarders for snowboarders”

GB: Where have you done seasons?
Pro Ride: Pro Ride Coaches and crew have travelled all over the world snowboarding and coaching.

Some of the resorts to name a few include Morzine, Avoriaz, Banff, Iceland, Chomonix, Mayerhofen, Hintertx, Stubai, Scotland, Snowpark, Cadrona, Coronet Peak, Niseko, Mt Buller and of course many, many seasons in Whistler.

GB: What made you start Pro Ride?
Pro Ride: Having a professional snowboard background, and having coached for a number of seasons, the natural progressions was to share the passion of riding and teaching with others on a different level.

At the time there was not much out there in the way of camps with a real personal and hands on approach. We started small and have grown seeing many people come back to ride with our coaches year after year.

GB: Why Canada?
Pro Ride: Canada’s a pretty amazing place especially the west coast with its large picturesque snow-capped mountains and great snow resorts. The people are friendly and life is pretty relaxed. It’s a really healthy lifestyle.

GB: What do you like about running the courses in Canada?
Pro Ride: Canada is where I live full time, as do all the Pro Ride coaches, so it’s nice running courses right from our door step. Having taught seasons in other resorts you realise there really is no other place quite like this for both great snow and lifestyle.

GB: Which resorts are you based?
Pro Ride: Our Pro Ride programs are based in Whistler, BC, Canada home of the 2010 winter Olympics. Every 2 years we also run a 10 day powder trip to Niseko, Japan.

GB: Why Whistler?
Pro Ride: Whistler is not just an incredible place to ride, it also has an amazing town of friendly locals and seasonal travellers. Did I forget to mention we also have the most legendary powder, tree runs, and a world class snowboard park for all levels! We are so lucky to have all the facilities and infrastructure of a city but with a small town feel.

GB: What makes Whistler better than some other Canadian Resorts?
Pro Ride: Whistler consistently averages more snow than most resorts in Canada. It also has the 2nd highest vertical drop in North America with over 8,100 acres of incredible and varied terrain.

Candidates can arrive in Whistler knowing they are guaranteed to have a fantastic time both on and off the hill.

GB: How many seasons have you been running in Canada?
Pro Ride: We established Pro Ride in 1997, giving us 16 awesome years of experience running a world class camp. Our staff are the most dedicated people I know, to both Pro Ride and snowboarding.

GB: What's the average pass rate with Pro-Ride?
Pro Ride: Our 12 week instructor courses have a 100% pass rate for both level 1 and park instructor exams and a 95% pass rate for level 2. We believe in setting people up for success so if campers need a little extra help with their riding or more time to train we will facilitate it.

GB: Difference between instructor courses do you offer?
Pro Ride: Pro Ride’s Instructor courses are only one of the types of programs we run. We cover all aspects of riding including freeride, freestyle and backcountry programs for those looking to combine their instructor program with a little extra, or for those who want to progress their riding but are not interested in taking exams.

A popular choice is to combine the level 1 & 2 instructor course with freestyle park training. Long term courses start at 4 weeks all the way to 12 weeks for the ultimate experience, and candidates can train in one specific area or combine training with a mixture of 4 areas for all-round rider improvement.

Freeride: Build your core riding skills by learning to carve, explore powder, trees, steeps, jumps & more.
Freestyle: Learn tricks on jumps, boxes, rails, jibs & half pipe in the terrain park.
Instructor: Train for your instructor’s qualifications. Level 1, 2, 3 & park instructor available.
Backcountry: Learn the skills necessary to travel into the backcountry safely.

What qualification do you gain when passing with Pro Ride?
Once you have trained and passed your instructor exams you will receive your CASI (Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors) certification.

This certification is internationally recognised in most countries, opening up opportunities to ride and work all around the world. We will also assist in any way to help you gain employment in the industry.

GB: What makes you stand out more than other companies in Canada?
Pro Ride: Pro Ride is run by snowboarders exclusively for snowboarders, with the lowest camper to coach ratio of 4:1 in the industry.

Our coaches are fun, experienced, and have firsthand local knowledge as our operations are located right in the heart of Whistler. It is also important to us that all staff, including those not coaching, be trained with CASI or equivalent snowboard instructor qualifications.

How do you help achieve passing on CASI programs with Pro Ride?
Pro Ride coaches are some of the most experienced and qualified in Whistler. Most are CASI level 3 & 4 certified examiners so they know the level that is required to get candidates through their exams.

If campers need a little extra training on or off the hill we’ll make sure they get what they need. Every week we have video analysis sessions, which is an essential and valuable tool for improving riding, and for detection and correction techniques.

Natives: Can you give us a break down of what candidates get?
