So lasts years King of the Kicker held at Ski Rossendale saw one of the UK’s oldest dry slopes on the rise with a brand new booter, with the competition having some serious hype and a serious turnout, this year the organisers had to work twice as hard to get the job done. Jamie Keeble was again at the head of it all. The upkeep of the slope has been a constant battle against the elements, with leaves and dirt getting the better of the slope but with plenty of support, a jet pack leaf blower and a lick of paint for the rails and boxes, the slope was looking good, plus this year speed wasn’t going to be an issue with fresh sprinkler heads and a huge tub of soft and slippy for the competitors to use to go as big as possible.
The first couple hours or so consisted of everyone thrown in together for a super relaxed jam format session, the dubstep was pumping and the skiers were throwing down some absolute bangers, huge 5’s, regular and switch from the likes of Katie Summerhayes and Sissy Herant, who took some horror slams on her misty attempts, plus switch flares from Tyler Harding along with his infamous cork 7’s. But let’s not forget the snowboarders putting in the effort, although a bit overwhelmed by the skiing turnout they jockeyed for position on the drop in and got in some runs with Col Mytton throwing down the gauntlet right off the bat, with tricks like switch underfilp 5’s for the technicality and then backside 180 melon’s for the style and the spectators to drool over. But stealing the show was Katie Ormerod, although she was in a category of her own she had her weeterbix that morning and would have given the men a run for their money, she was dialed in and stomping backside 540 Indy’s within just a few runs, going for some back 7s towards the end of the session. Worth a mention was the Kendal contingency that had made the trip across to Rossendale with the likes of Stuart Siri and Ben Chetwood getting their front and back 3’s stomped and on lock.

So with the serious stomp fest that had just taken place the judges had to disappear and scratch their heads for a while because they had to decide who was through to the final and who didn’t make the cut, and believe me when I say, it was a difficult one. Meanwhile out on the slope a mini rail jam took place, with switch ups and 270’s left right and centre so the spot prizes and props were being hurled at the competitors. Some took the time to rest up and focus on the final, with a few cans of monster being consumed everyone was ready to compete for the title of King of the Kicker.

The final was underway, three runs each was all that was allowed for the riders to show off what they had and the judges to note it all down. Let me tell you it went off, the snowboarders had frontside rodeo attempts from Ben Koir, Backside 7’s from both Col and Tom Percival but I think the best display was little 7 year old Harvey Ormerod, finding every ounce of speed to bust out a cheeky booty method on the little jump before stacking a couple times only to dust off his shoulders and jump back up again. Plus it would be wrong not to mention local boy Sam Fletcher boosting with some style points just getting the better of Tomski Robinson who fell trying to nail those frontside 5’s.

But I think the limelight goes to the skiers who really put on a competition and a show for the spectators, with 9’s seen from the men’s winner James Machon and also a couple switch 9’s from Tyler. All this alongside, misty’s, rodeos from Joe Hides and spins in all directions, but the main thing was each and every one done oozing with style

So with the tricks landed and the decisions made all that was left to do was crown the Kings of the Kicker 2010, added to the prize giving this year was the best unsponsored, consisting of a pair of Storm skis, and a Technine snowboard donated by Subvert, some Drop goggles and a massive can of Monster each, both riders rode their hearts out and took home the goodies, Josh Herant taking it on the ski side and Ben Koir on the snowboard, grins all round. This year comp went down a treat so keep your ears open and your eyes peeled because talk of round three next year is on the cards.
