A large nugget of gold has been found by a hiker in the ski resort of Crans-Montana in Switzerland. It is thought to have been the largest nugget ever found in the Alps and the location of its discovery is being kept secret.
I don’t know about you guys, but I know where I am going snowboarding this winter!

The man who made the discovery was from Germany and has wished to remain anonymous. He found the gold whilst walking along the River Tièche.

According to PlanetSKI, the man says that he made his discovery 'quite by chance' during a hike along the banks of the river.

Experts have assessed the find and it is definitely real, however it has yet to be valued. The find has a diameter of 7 centimetres (2.76 inches), is 3.5 cm (1.3 inches) thick and weighs 128.5 grams (4.5 ounces).

The tourist office of Crans-Montana has announced its surprise at the size and weight of the find, as the area is not normally known to contain gold.

Local authorities are concerned it might produce a gold rush as fortune seekers descend on the area.

The local Tourist Office released a statement that said: “The exact location where the nugget was found will not be revealed for environmental and safety reasons. This should protect Crans-Montana and surrounding areas against excessive crowds of gold-seekers. Thank you very much for your understanding.”
