GONEboarding moderator and part time Tamworth Snowdome Instructor Pete Campbell is taking on one of his biggest challenges to date. In July 2012 he will attempt to cycle 284 miles from London to Paris over 4 days to raise money for Christian Aid in their bid to say ‘On your bike to poverty’. Should everything go to plan, Pete will arrive in time to see the Tour de France make it’s final laps of the Champs-Elysees and hopefully see British hopefuls Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish on the podium in green and yellow jerseys respectively.
After retiring from football this Summer due to family and work commitments, Pete was looking for something to stop him becoming a coach potato and decided to take up cycling after dabbling in the sport in his teens. Dusting off his 20 year old Raleigh Flyer and old Z-Vetements cycling jersey (that somehow still fit), he started putting the miles in on the road. Now with a new more modern bike and new acquired cycling drawer to replace the football one, he’s set his sights on the 4 day, 284 mile challenge. With the winter months approaching, time on the bike will be more difficult and will probably mean evenings spent on the turbo trainer, however Pete knows that he will need to keep up this training to succeed, “Spending over 20 years of my life playing football, I’m no stranger to training and keeping fit, however this is certainly my biggest challenge. I have a plan in place of doing 5 to 6 Sportives before the London to Paris ride that range from 70 to 100 miles. With the first one pencilled in for the 23rd March, I certainly need to make sure I keep putting miles in the legs this winter. I’ve recently joined Heanor Clarion Cycling Club, where they’ve been very friendly and am hoping to get out on some rides soon.”

With a target of raising £1300, as part of his fundraising Pete will be running various auctions on his ebay page, with 100% of the sales price going to Christian Aid. His family business PF Collections Ltd that specialises in upholstery has already donated various small items that are currently listed. Pete is looking for any items and services that he could auction. So if you have anything you can offer please get in touch via e-mail at pete@goneboarding.co.uk .

You can view the current auction listings at the following website address: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/chili_mini/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

You can also donate directly to Pete’s Virgin Giving page and if you do, please remember to ‘Gift Aid’ it. http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fatbobfilms

Any donation big or small will be greatly received. Here are some examples of how your donation can be put to use:

£5 could pay for a meal for 40 children in Bangladesh, where nearly half of under-fives are malnourished.

£12 could pay for an emergency radio in Guatemala, saving lives by letting people know when the storms are coming during hurricane season.

£30 could provide 1,000 tree-saplings in Kenya, to conserve the soil and make it more suitable for crops.
