Glencoe SAVED!!!!

An entrepreneur who started a Kleeneze catalogue business in 1994, earning a few hundred pounds a month and then growing it into a £1 million a year turnover business, has stepped in at the 11th hour to save the Glencoe ski resort just ahead of the new season.
Andy Meldrum, a 41 year old former surveyor from Falkirk, is heading up a consortium of ski enthusiasts that has bought the resort for an undisclosed sum, enabling it to open for the winter ski season. The move has been welcomed as a massive boost for Scottish tourism and follows a 3,000 strong online petition for the resort to be saved.

Following the sale, the new owners have confirmed that the resort will open its doors this Sunday (8 November) selling discounted season passes*. They have also announced plans for future investment for the resort, preserving 36 full-time and seasonal jobs.

Andy commented, “The best way to safeguard and develop skiing at Glencoe is to explore the possibility of snowmaking to ensure that the centre is less dependent on the vagaries of the Scottish climate. With this in mind we plan to have a number of weather stations up and running by the start of the season.

“In addition we are planning further development of the resort as a year-round facility; with new mountain bike trails (and bike hire), an adventure play-park, dry ski slope and archery range being on offer for the 2010 summer.”

Bobby Munroe, resort manager, says, “This is really great news for UK snow sports enthusiasts, for Scottish skiing and for local employment. We’ve got a lot of work to do to be open for the start of the season, but we’re all up for the challenge”.

Bobby Williamson, Glencoe ski patrol, says, “The resort with Scotland’s premier ski and snow board terrain and an enviable weather record has been thrown a lifeline”.

Hopefully with a great managment team and investment Glencoe can become a success. Good luck to the team.
