EVERYBODY FALLS!

Lesson number two:

Falling

This is something that happens all the time, to every rider, at every level.
It can hurt, it can break bones, damage pride and can even kill. However resisting a fall will always end up worse than accepting it.

Whether it is your first time on a board, or you are seasoned pro; we should look at this matter from a physical and psychological point of view.

When a fall occurs, the general tendency is to stiffen up, lean away from the direction of fall, cringe, and brace for impact. This seemingly natural reaction is not good for the body.

When we stiffen up our muscles we are more likely to break our bones whilst falling. When we lean away from the direction of our fall, we create a kind of catapult effect.

Simply saying to relax and go with the fall when it occurs is easier said than done. So for this reason I would suggest practicing some safe methods of falling:

Don't put arms or elbows out to stop a fall (unless completely necessary).
Do put forearms out and roll over them in to the fall.

Avoid falling on the tail bone.
Choose one bum cheek over another during the fall, (which ever is closest to the point of impact) and roll in to the fall

Roll with inertia, in the direction you feel yourself being pulled.
Don't lean away, roll "around".

Do what feels fluid; Rolling down hill, sliding, relaxing, ninja style.

Practice these different types of falls frequently, in as many different circumstances and directions as possible, so you can treat it like an EAP (Emergency Action Plan).

This will release a psychological block from the smallest sub-conscious fear of falling, and help with "letting snowboarding happen" as discussed in lesson one. Not to mention a few funny looks from passers by, aiding the pride factor.
