Competitors at the 2010 Burton New Zealand Open faced challenging conditions on day two of the event at Cardrona Alpine Resort.
However, the bad weather hasn't stopped competitors turning out in force, with 53 men and 28 womenvying for a spot in Saturday's semi-finals.

The riders who qualify will join invited professionals including Ryo Aono (Japan), Louie Vito (US), Iouri Podladtchikov (Switzerland), Kendall Brown (New Zealand) and Kelly Clark (US).

Taku Hiraoka of Japan seized top spot in the pre-qualifier and qualifier heats, closely followed by Keito Kumazaki and US talent Benjamin Farrow.

New Zealand's Mitchell Brown also made the cut, as did US boarders Brennan Swanson and Spencer Shaw. For the women, worsening conditions threw qualifying wide open, but Japanese riders tended to dominate, with Hikaru Oe and Haruna Matsumoto leading the charge.

Apparently the weather was so bad at Mt Hutt that 1100 had to spend the night in a couple of the cafes, cos there's no hotels there. Something about 200kmph winds up on the ridges! Hope it improves for today's Mens & Women's Halfpipe.

There's a live webcast going on from midnight tonight (I think).

Some stuff about the weather & the webcast link: http://www.alpineelements.co.u
