Big White Ski Resort is currently celebrating it’s 50th season and is the 4th largest ski area in Canada. It’s situated just 35 miles from the city of Kelowna in the heart of British Columbia, Canada. It has a consistent supply of dry snow, locally referred to as Okanagan champagne powder, which results in large formations of snow and ice caked onto the trees known as ‘tree ghosts’. The area is one of the best in BC for bad weather due to the high treeline which offers a break from the weather that brings over 300 inches of snow a year; it’s no wonder ‘It’s the snow’ is the resorts’ slogan.
A natural playground

What Big White lacks in vertical (810m) it makes up in a super efficient lift system with short lines. The terrain is ideal for intermediates with great cruisers and is also very beginner friendly with green runs off every lift. However it’s the legendary off-piste that brings advanced skiers and boarders and many seasonaires to Big White year after year, such as the epic tree lines off the right of the Gem Lake chair in the photo below that make this place a natural playground.

In addition to the natural features is the excellent floodlit Telus freestyle park. The park offers different ‘lanes’ based on ability: the small & medium lane offers ‘progressive ride-on to jump-on take offs’ whilst the large & extra large lane ‘consists of an ever changing array of rails, jumps, tubes and taps.’

‘Snow hosts’ run free guided tours of the area starting 10:30 every morning and even though it’s a small area it’s recommended to go with them on the first day as the village is located right in the heart of the mountain and it takes a little while to get your bearings. For example there’s a village level gondola and runs that actually descends to a family friendly ‘Happy Valley Lodge’ area, with outdoor ice skating rink.

Perfect for seasonaires and courses

There is a big Australian seasonaire community in Big White, second only to it’s bigger BC neighbour Whistler. Where it scores top points, however, is in its snowboard instructor courses with a number of British companies offering 6 or 12 week CASI courses such as SnowRehab that come with first aid and avalanche awareness training along with cat boarding and hell days. Check out our camps and courses for companies you can trust in Big White. If you’re thinking of a gap year or a career change and are wanting to get qualified as an instructor you’ll be hard to find a better, more friendly base.

Getting and staying there

The resort is served by Kelowna International Airport with daily flights linking Vancouver and Calgary that are met by the resort shuttle which gets visitors to the hill in just 45 minutes. Otherwise it’s a 6 hour bus transfer from the west or east so we recommend taking the internal flight.

There’s a solid choice of accommodation from the ‘Urban Retreat’ hostel through to executive condos with the full range of accommodation shown on the resort site which also offers ‘stay and save’ deals. For nightlife there are some great options such as Snowshoe Sam’s which is a neighbourhood style bar and a gathering point for locals. It’s been voted Canada’s #1 Ski Bar by Ski Canada Magazine and offers a legendary ‘gunbarrel coffee’ where flaming Grand Marnier is poured down the barrel of a shotgun into a glass of brandy.

We feel it’s time more Brits discovered Big White and not let the Australians have all the fun!
