The Australian, 29, was a technician and was holidaying in the South Island with friends. He had taken his snowboard off to climb the side of Tarn Basin, behind the Mt Cheeseman Ski Area, near Christchurch, when he slipped.

The accident happened around midday on Friday and occurred when the man, who is still unnamed, and his two friends were climbing out of the basin.

One of the friends went for help at the nearby ski field, whilst another friend waited with him, but unfortunately the helicopter rescue squad were unable to reach him until 3.30pm.

The case has been referred to the coroner.
