Recently released findings from the British Journal of Sports Medicine have shown the strain wintersports can have on athletes - with 1 in 10 competitors suffering some form of injury.
Research carried out by medical experts suggests snowboard cross was one of the most dangerous of all the sports held at this year's Games in Vancouver - along with bobsleigh, ice hockey, short track and alpine freestyle, the discipline was classified 'high risk' with 15-35 per cent of athletes falling injured or ill in the heat of competition.

The journal's data was compiled using information from the head international physicians foe each of the teams represented at the Games. Lower risk sports in Vancouver - including cross country skiiing, ski jumping and Nordic saw less than 1 in 20 athletes suffering some form of injury.

Statistically, female competitors suffered more injuries than their male counterparts - with every fifth female athlete reporting an injury. However, medical experts believe the figures could actually be inaccurate, with many athletes opting to overlook reporting an injury in order to compete.
