http://www.goneboarding.co.uk/Forum/Helmet-cam-and-two-way-radios-throat-mics/ThreadID/26387/ShowThread.aspx
Thats a thread I started a few weeks back. Maybe people have some new ideas now, though.
As far as I can tell all the cameras look stupid except for the POV1 Only thing is, the POV costs more than what I paid for my board, bindings and my holiday.
Question is, will your boyfriend mind having a massive camera sticking off the side/top of his head, or would he prefer something that resembles a small black torch?
Cameras: Archos player add-on camera for Archos player £200 i think, google it a guy in the other thread advised against this, due to reliability issues, so i'll say no more.
Go Pro Helmet Hero £140 -£150 But only holds a 2GB memory card (saw this at the NEC snow show Picture quality is decent i guess. and it looks ok-ish. But on your head?
ATC5k This might look ok on your bike handlebars... but on your head?
V.I.O POV1 I've read that this is used by pros (and someone posted in the tread, too) http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/buy-viosport-pov1.htm If I didn't mind the price i'd get this one! I asked someone who films snowboarding and they said something like,"you can get one that looks like a remote control that stores the data and that bit goes in your backpack and just the camera goes on your head. They're way better than the other types you can get". This must've been the one he was talking about.
These are just my personal opinions, but i'd like a camera that looks good and is reliable. Especially as I feel silly enough in a helmet anyway. Not gonna spend extra just too look like a freak
3 of the 4 cameras are in the snow and rock catalogue (p193) if that helps. |

Hi,
What budget do you have. It starts from there really
I had the Archos 405 with Headcamera and I now have the POV.1.
The POV.1 is godlike , it's about £500, bought from the US, slightly cheaper than the UK, records in extreme conditions, records for several hours. It's used by extreme sports enthusiastics, the military, special forces, police forces...
Wicked bit of kit, with a new wide angle lense. It also uses normal batteries which is handy.
I found the Archos (there are a few types) really good (used in Morzine and Lake Louise) and many of my mates use it for Mountainbiking and I used it for snowboarding, however you need to look after it. Unlike the POV.1 which is shocikproof, waterproof and runs at extreme temperatures, the Archos doesn't so you need to keep it warm and dry and generally look after it more than other systems. It's also not purpose built for filming as its primarily an mp4 device, media, music etc.
You could get a cheap 405, with an 8GB SDHC card for £150, from ebay.
SolGlo mentioned Dogcam Sport, which is a nice place to start. I went there, then purchased from the US direct as it was cheaper, just did it online.
DogCam is a good site to start with.
My advice is to talk to people that use them
For god sake don't go for the helmet on the head, prone to bumps i would guess and he would look like a muppet, plus how do you know what you are filming, aiming at etc. |

I notice you live in Dorset, well not a million miles from:
DCS Systems ltd. The Granary Little Skewes Farm St Wenn Cornwall PL30 5PS
TEL: 01726 891812
Which is where Dogcamsport is based
Maybe start with them , get recommendations then come back here and ask our thoughts again?
I found them really helpful.

I've been using a Chase Cam PDR 100 for the last few years. It's been used in some harsh conditions, from Motorcross, Snow Boarding or Ice Climbing in -15 degs, and never missed a beat.

Question for POV.1 owners... how do you know on the wireless remote whether the camera is still running or not? Or do you have to pull the POV main unit out of your pocket, considering it is bombproof. |

I used Action Cameras also.
If starting from nothing and you have the money to do the job properly then the VIO POV 1 has to be the best solution.
Cost wise it isn't massively more expensive than buying a camcorder, bullet camera, battery packs, LANC remotes when you add it all up. |

Mmm, good question. The only truefire way of knowing is to take it out of it's pouch and look.
As it's bulletproof, it will not be affected by temperature or moisture like other devices, which could cause issues, which is what happened with my Archos. You can have it running for a long time on batteries and with a 8GB SDHC Card (recording in 4GB chunks), so you don't have to turn it on and off to conserve power or capacity. I intend to press record and leave it from start to lunchtime, occassionally checking or stopping recording on lifts etc. At lunchtime I will swap batteries and SDHC card. In the evening, download all data and recharge batteries
I believe they are looking at turning on and off in wireless mode, maybe have a standby option on it.
You can also lock the device so you are unlikely to turn it off. |

ive noticed no-one has mentioned the contour hd, is this because you all think its crap? the quality looks pretty amazing to me, and its considerably cheaper than other high quality cams. Anyone had any experience with them? |

Contour looks good, but Still think the POV.1 is better (higher quality) and more durable.
VIO just released exposure control on the POV.1 too, so there is an improvement in quality in different light.
Contour a lot cheaper I believe, so might be worth a try. I would wait a little see if anyone gets it before trying. |

Is it just me that thinks that helmet cam footage is the most dull thing ever? |

Depends on how many face plants the wearer of the cam does ! |

I've resorted to using a HD pocket digital camera. 1) They have anti-shake properties, which helps a bit. 2) You can ride alongside someone pointing the camera while still being able to see what you are doing 3) It's 5 times cheaper and easier to setup. 4) The quality could arguably be better (depending on your riding ability while holding a camera) as helmet camera's usually don't have great quality electronics. |
