Where is the best place to go in the French alps? I am working in the south of France at the mo and my contract end soon. Im going to head to the alps to find work and accommodations. What is the best resort in terms of all night partying and snowboarding alike, basically the biggest and best resort of a mini review on some of them would be great.
Thanks guys...im really looking forward to doing a seasion... |

how long is a piece of string?!
almost impossible to give an answer on this one dude, there are hundreds of answers! however, if you're looking for partying then aim for one of the major resorts - Tignes, Morzine, les 2 alps, Alp D'huez etc... all will have a large amount of terrain to ride, big parks and a huge seasonaires community with plenty going on.
you'll have a wicked time wherever you go, just pick one and go! |

I agree with Polaroid. Very difficult to choose between them, here are some of my thoughts:
Val d'Isere is largely the Ibiza of the French Alps - big party atmosphere, attracts all sorts of people but is very pricey. Tignes is joined to Val by the Espace Killy ski area and is a much more snowboard orientated place, big on parties but not a 'typical' resort - very 1960's concrete jungle! Morzine/Avoriaz is a massive ski area (portes de soliel) and is a mecca for boarders but if in Morzine it isn't generally snow sure due to altitude of the town (1000m). Also close to Chamonix. 3 Valleys is a party mecca offering something for everyone - Courcheval is high end, high prices, high rolling clients, Meribel is pretty young and vibrant with Val Thoren being small but snow-sure due to it's altitude (2400m) as the highest resrot in the alps. All are linked. Serre Chevalier is also good but limited nightlife - makes for a good atmosphere mind, as you get to know people in the resort a lot more. Deaux Alps is good - good area and a lively resort too. Close to Alp d'heuz and Serre Che as well. |

I have just spent a few hours reading up on the places you have mentioned. I noticed that Val Thorens is the longest opening out of the lot. Saturday 21st November 2009 to Sunday 2nd May 2010. Which is best for me because my contract in the south of france is finishing soon. 5th sept. So im basically waiting on the winter seasion starting. I havnt got any plans so i will probably just head up to the alps. Val Thorens looking favourite, but i was concerned with some websites saying it is mainly dutch and Danish speaking. I need to learn more French and i am scared that i will not be able to speak to many people in French. What language did you notice there most?
Thanks for your replys... |

Nothing wrong with the Dutch and Danes, especially if your single buddy!
The good thing about France (and the worst thing sometimes) is that the French are petulant - they will avoid speaking other languages whenever possible! As a consequence you will always have plenty of opportunities practise your French!
Val Thorens is nice but be aware it is quite small. But with the links to Meribel you can jump across a valley if you want a bigger night on the tiles.
One place I didn't mention was Les Arc. Nice thing about Les Arc is that you can live in Bourg St Maurice which is the hub of the valley really, and ride in Les Arc by taking the Furnicular railway up the hill each day. More jobs around Bourg as well as bigger town. Same valley as Tignes & Val d'Isere as well which are about an hr up the valley from Bourg. |

I came on here to look for a possible change for next season, but I always seem to end up going back to Chatel.
Great ski range, impossible to get bored. Night life is fairly quiet, but still a good place to go out with teh lads.

Not sure there will be much opportunity for speaking French in Val Thorens. Mainly English and Dutch. I am based in valley below Courchevel. Maybe also consider looking to stay in somewhere liek Brides Les Bains - much cheaper, easy access to Meribel and all Three Valleys.....For more night life Meribel probably the best around this area.
Bourg St Maurice lovely town and fair few seasonaires. I did season just up road in Peisey and great area as had access to all les Arcs and La Plagne. Not massive night life but enough. |
