#1 Whats all the fuss about GoPro??? Posted 24/01/2012 @ 18:26 |

Well ive been away from the 'scene' for a few years and I come back and it seems one company has taken over the market for amateur snowboarding films and also some of the pro market. Can someone explain why one brand is so much better than all the rest? is it purely the way they are mountable on poles?? a recent trip to hemel i think i counted 4 ppl filming using them at the same time and about 7 with the mounts on their helmets. Last time I rent riding this would have been few and far between , i guess ppl have ramped up their filming efforts for their own videos??? |

what compression does it use? do all cheaper hd cams use the same compression? An hd frame size is all very well but if its compressed to hell its not so amazing.
I say this as i work in visual effects in commercials , we sometimes get stuff to do compositing with thats filmed on 5d's which i think uses h.264 and its terrible sometimes when you look closely |

The specs for the GoPro are available on their site. Vimeo uses h.264; uTube broadly does too. More is always better, but I don't personally find the codec used there the major issue.
I've used both the GoPro and the major competitor for small audience TV stuff and I choose the GoPro because the video quality is better. You'll see them used in some larger-audience stuff such as "Top Gear".
Riding with a lot of people using various systems I suspect that despite the ugliness of the GoPro it's actually easier to use - I've seen fewer breakages and consistently less farting about with GoPros compared with other alternatives.
There's a 5D2 video up for an Oscar. For obvious reasons 5D2 footage is better than any of these little cameras, and worse than a Red One (4K). |

I have had a Contour for a while and just prefer the way it mounts.
I have seen mates Go Pros ping off while riding and must rather the mount i have my contour.
Quality of video is pretty good too. |

I agree, the optics are better on the Go Pro qv. the Contour (although I've not seen the newest contour with the improved lens). My gripe is that it's a pain to be sure that it's actually switched on. All Go Pro raw footage shows the user or a mate checking that the red light is on etc!
The contour has fewer features and is less durable (but I've ridden the contour in puking snow, super cold and wet, and it's been fine), but it's very good at letting you know when it's on and when it's off. My best ever jibbing session was lost to history (don't weep, but in my book a decent frontboard to fakie is epic!) due to it telling me it was recording and it wasn't. User error? Probably, but why make it so hard?
The ideal solution for me would be Go Pro optics with fewer complicating features in a neat, light package that shouts at you when you switch it on (whilst still wearing your gloves!!). |

I have had a contour, which ended up at the bottom of the sea cos the surf mount didn't work as it should... they offered me a new camera at a discounted rate saving a massive $20!!! which I declined
I then bought a Gopro hero2, and I am blown away by the video quality compared to the contour! the stills on the gopro are also superior... in fact I'd say that the screen grabs I've taken from the gopro are of better quality than the stills I took with the contour!!
as for the ease of use issue, I find that the Gopro is much more suitable to being used for action sports because of how many settings it has.... and it can be set to one button record just as the contour does, If you cant hear the 3 loud beeps when you turn it on then maybe its a hearing problem and not a camera issue
The Gopro is way ahead in terms of quality and settings, Which I guess is why everyone is using them |

I see Shawn White is now shilling for GoPro. Hope the price doesn't go up as a result. |

Go pros are solid, I landed on my head while motocrossing with one on and it was fine, It was a pretty hard crash as well. And they have very good quality footage with very good mounts.
They are just better than anything else out there in my humble opinion. |
