Hello all,

What problems are beginner snowboarders faced with? It's something I've been thinking about recently, so thought I'd take the opportunity to put it out to the forum...

What snowboarding problem are you trying to fix right now? Is it where to go snowboarding? How to get your turns working properly? What equipment to buy? etc.

My current problem is: how long do I have to wait 'till I can snowboard again?

Any input would be appreciated

Cheers

Not so much a beginner problem (we all have things we need to fix) but I'm trying like a motherf*cker to get rid of handbag arm when I'm on a rail/box.

It's doing my nut in every time I see myself in a pic or video and I look like I'm just nipping out for the shopping!

I'm forcing myself to ride switch every time I hit Chill Factore, and I'm definitely putting too much weight on my back foot. Would be fine for deep snow, but when was the last time CFe had a pow day?

Scaredy-cat-ness when approaching a kicker to spin 180 ... I just can't persuade myself to huck into it off a kicker ... off a little groomer lip and stuff like that it's fine & I know I can do it it's just my head & my legs have a little disagreement on the way up to the kicker lip

Also, I'm trying to stand up straighter when riding rails. A mate pointed out to me that I'm leaning over from my waist to get low instead of bending zee knees ... must bend zee knees & find some style somewhere

I know what you mean, but you should never 'huck' yourself into a rotation - it'll end up messy as you are not controlled, you'll probably drop a shoulder and end up corking it leading to a head and neck landing!

Next time, jsut do a few runs on the kicker so that you are comfortable hitting the sweet spot of the landing (the first 1/3 of the landing after the knuckle) with straight airs. Then decide that you are going to do a 180 and accept that you will probably end up on your arse the first time. ACCEPT IT! If you accept that it might not go to plan and that you might hurt your arse once or twice, you'll be able to do it - and probably realise that it aint so scary! Try rotating Frontside first as you will always see the landing throughout the rotation. Approach with a flat base - very subtle pressure on your heels but do not carve up the take-off. Wait until your in the air and suck your legs up towards your stomach (keeps you stable) - you will need to rotate your shoulders and your hips for a 180 - bigger kickers will give more time in the air and so less need to rotate at the hips as well. keep looking forward (at the landing) and keep your head up - this will keep you stable and ensure that you only spin on one axis. Touch down with both feet at the same time and absorb the landing - don't worry if the first time you only mke it 90 degrees or spin out on landing, it's all about progression!

Thanks for that I don't really mean "huck" when I say huck ... I guess I mean "commit" I lack commitment I know the theory & I did manage to get my straight airs nailed nicely the last time I was at MK so I think on the next visit I'm gonna do as you say, do a few straight airs then commit to doing 180s and to hell with the consequences ... just wich I could get that message through to the old legs

It's not the legs buddy - it's your head that you need to get it into!

No one wants to crash, or injure themselves, but as I have learnt from many different experiences (military, sport, etc) that you're more likely to hurt when you do something half-arsed! This is the method I use:
1. Decide what you want to do.
2. Progress to the point that the natural progression is doing the thing you want to do. i.e. for a 360 it is natural to be able to do 180's confidently. For 540s then 360s etc).
3. Be happy with the run in - everything is set in the run-in and so make sure that you set from the word go.
4. Run through your plan in your head - mental prepertion is veryimportant. Practise the movements of rotating if you want at the top of the run/next to the jump/wherever you want.
5. COMMIT - no turning back - you are dong this because you want to do it to get better/look cooler/whatever your motivation.
6. Rinse and repeat - good or bad you just got to keep going up. If you need to change something then hange it, if not keep doing it - this is known as positive reinforcement and will help to cement it in your subconcious so you can do it 'at will' in the future.

My problem is landing switch, I can ride regular, I can 'semi-ride' switch, but I can't land 180's for the life of me. It depresses the hell out of me, think it's purely lacking the confidence to ride away switch!

I can land them on flat fine, but get me near a kicker/bit of speed and I am utter noobish.

How fast can you ride switch?

Maybe you just need to spend a little more time riding switch quickly, so you're comfortable riding it out when you land on the steep down of a kicker?

yeah i know my problem is simply riding switch, i don't practice as much as i should, i really need to spend some solid time practicing it and getting more comfortable, but doing that = falling over!

it'll come eventually
