#1 USA or Europe? Posted 07/06/2010 @ 09:46 |

Its decision time. We are wanting to go away for either a two week holiday or two one week holidays, not this next season but the one after. Its gonna be a treat for my step son finishing his GCSEs and me getting my degree!! We dont know whether to go for one holiday in Cali or Canada or go for mayb two holidays in Europe? We have been looking at mammoth mountain and aroung lake Tahoe it looks amazing but very expensive, I wanted to know if the snow is worth it or whether there are places in europe that are just as good for half the price? |

Depending on the pound! 2011 we have decided on Europe as its just too expensive for North America 2012 it may be different. |

Vancouver most expensive ski destination... 20 Jan 2010 Virgin Money has identified Vancouver as the most expensive ski destination this year. One week’s four-star accommodation, ski hire, insurance, food and sightseeing at the Canadian resort costs £3,500 for two people, according to the latest Virgin Money Travel Insurance Index.
Vancouver is set to host the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games from 12-28 February.
Bratislava in Slovakia was the cheapest in the index at just £545.94 for two people.
Twelve ski resort cities were included in the research, which did not take into account the cost of air travel.
Second most expensive was Chamonix, France, costing £2,376 per couple, followed by Stockholm (£1,154), Reykjavik (£1,124) and Oslo (£1,089).
Stockholm and Oslo came out most expensive for drink, with two pints of beer costing in excess of £10. In Bratislava, a pint costs 92p.
Grant Bather, of Virgin Money Travel Insurance, said: ‘Ski season is hotly anticipated by a great number of people and more and more are looking to combine a few days on the slopes with a few days in a city.
‘The Virgin Money Travel Insurance Index shows destinations such as Innsbruck, Sarajevo and Ljubljana are incredibly cheap compared to the more established resorts of Vancouver and Chamonix.’ |

Depending on how far in advance you're booking keep and eye on the currencies and forecasts on the price of long-haul travel. Theres a general consensus that heading out to the US/Canada is going to be alot more expensive this coming season, whereas with the way the Euro is going at the moment a holiday closer to home might prove a great deal cheaper that in recent times. You don't need to go to one of the more well-known resorts to get the most out of your trips! |

I would hold-off making a decision and see what the weather does (La Nina anyone??) or see if a cut-price offer comes up.
Last year when Banff was struggling to fill beds, they came up with a deal that included ski passes and accomodation for pretty much the cost of a flight.
Hay, If we do get hit with a monster Nina storm, the extra cost could be well worth it!! |

Hey Thunderblob,
Thanks for sharing that report but I believe that Virgin Money report was from last year, when we had the Olympics. Although the actual Olympic period itself was priced higher last year, outside of the Olympic weeks there was actually some great deals to be found.
We have some great deals this year as well. Check out our Early Booking Offer - http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/deals_packages/ebd/ebd_CAN.htm or keep an eye on our Deals and Packages page - http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/deals_packages/index.htm
The Virgin Money report is a little confusing as they are referring to Vancouver as a resort, which of course it isn't. |

Yes the report was from January this year so obviously the Olympics would have had massive implications, daft report really when it bases it on Cities, another report actually states ski trips down 10% last year and probably again this year????.
We looked at Canada this year and it was silly prices for a group struggling at two grand each with flights and passes, which is annoying as you know people who have done the same trip for under a grand |

Like many on here I'd wait till the time and either try to find a cheap US/Canada trip or just find two resorts in the Alps and do two 1 week trips, one in December and one in March/April. All depends on how much money you want to spend at the end of the day.
These days I love finding a cheap apartment somewhere in the French alps, throwing lots of food / drink into the car and doing the drive down for the week...kinda lucky since I live not too far from the tunnel |

Are you thinking of booking now? I'm not sure that's possible, since most airlines and travel agents don't take booking more than about 15 months in advance. But as others have said, you should wait until nearer the time. The US$ or Euro exchange rate could change alot by then, making one cheaper than the other. Mammoth is (statistically speaking) better in El Nino years, like last season. Lake Tahoe is a complete lottery either way - you could get several feet every day for a week... or nothing at all... or it could rain. The coming season is looking like it could be a La Nina season, so that's not great for Mammoth. But 2011/12 could be different again. In general, the west side of North America gets alot more snow than Europe, and is alot more predictable, but it has a different vibe than Europe and is obviously further away, so doesn't suit everyone. For me, powder is all that matters, so it's North America every time. |
