  #1  Upgrading from a 400D to a 40D - worth it?  Posted 03/09/2008 @ 12:51
I'm considering upgrading my 400D to a 40D now that the 50D is out and causing the price of the 40 to plummet. I'm scraping the barrel money wise (I'm buying a 24-70 L soon as well) so anything else more costly isn't an option. So, is it worth my shelling out a couple of hundred extra quid for a 40 or should I be hanging onto my pennies for something better to come along? I just need a few opinions. Cheers

I'd be interested for you reasoning's also.

Other than a few functions/features and a couple of meggi-mitchell's what's the difference?

Isn't that a comparison between a 40D and a 450D?

Oooops

Better ISO, Higher ISO, faster frame rate, larger LCD, .095x magnification in viewfinder vs .8x
Has cross type sensor - better for AF.

Not much, but there may be handling and ergonomic considerations.

Yeah, I can understand choosing the 40D over the 400D, but upgrading to it seems a little... pointless?

Ok, I'm upgrading because the lower noise at higher ISO means I can get better shots at gigs. Faster frame rate means I can get more shots at gigs and better sequences snowboarding. Better autofocus means I can get the focus right more times at gigs so an improved hit rate.

It also feels nicer to hold :D

I went from a 350d to the 40d and the difference is amazing. So i would say yes its worth the upgrade but you have to weigh the cost up against how much use it will get. I also have the 24-70L and its an awesome lens. I dont know what ur currently using but that lens on its own will make a huge difference. If your on a tight budget then get then lens and try it on you 450 body and see if your happy with the results. One warning though, once you have an L series lens you will not use anything else and thats expensive

I know this is a little late and all - but how did you get on with the upgrade, did you see much difference? Is there really much diff in the ISO performance from the xxxd series to the xxd series? I thought they were much of a muchness... just cased in a sturdier body? I've seen awesome photography from the 350d upwards, including this years world nature photog award winner.

f I were you, I'd keep the 400D until it dies and then change to whatever Canon has brought out at that time (45D, 50D, whatever). The 40D is a great cam (I have one, coming from a 10D), but the difference between the 400D is not all that great to ratify an upgrade now, I think.
