Thursday 1 December 2005
Introduction
Scotland has had a brilliant start to the season with the best conditions in years and three resorts open for skiing this week. Temperatures have risen in Scotland so the snow has become soft although snow is forecast at the Cairngorms and Glenshee over the weekend so hopefully this will improve the conditions even more. France is looking really good for many resorts opening this weekend as there is a good amount of snow predicted to fall. This is great news as the French resorts have already had a good amount of snow over the last week. Austria is still skiing really well thanks to the recent snowfalls and they have fairly clear skies at the moment allowing people to really take advantage of the great conditions. In Italy it is a similar situation with fine skies supporting the skiing in the open resorts. The snow just keeps on falling across Norway and the conditions are improving daily. At last the snow is on its way in Switzerland and the sunny weather of today will change to snow which should fall for the next five days. The good news is in Zermatt with the opening of the Rothorn area on Saturday. The season in Slovenia will start on Saturday with the opening of Kranjska Gora (10/110cm), it is snowing today and will do so again on Friday night and it looks like a great start to the winter for them.
There has been a lot of snow across the North American resorts and more is forecast for the next couple of days. Lots of powder in many areas, and fortunately temperatures are dropping again in eastern resorts.
Austria
Recent flurries and clear skies over Austria today mean some great skiing is to be had. The Austrian glaciers are still the best places to ride with good base depths. Obertauern has seventeen lifts spinning and with a deep base of 110cm at the top for some good on and off piste action. Several areas are hoping to open this weekend including Gargellen, Kühtai and Saalbach. The Wilder Kaiser-Brixental area encompassing Ellmau, Soll, Schaffau, Hopfgarten and Westendorf is also planning to kick off the winter season on Saturday. Conditions are forecast to be snowy, but check the snow reports tomorrow for further info on the above resorts.
France
Argentiere opened its first three lifts today with clear skies and soft pistes, and a base depth of 30cm at the top. This area can also be access from Chamonix on the skibus. A dusting of fresh snow has also refreshed the pistes in Avoriaz (30/30cm), Les Deux Alpes (20/50cm), Tignes (18/50cm), and Val Thorens (30/40cm), but stay high in all four areas as the lower slopes are still patchy. Make use of the clear weather as well because more snow is on its way. A large list of resorts are due to open this weekend in both the Alps and the Pyrenees, including Val d¡¯Isere, Alpe D¡¯Huez, Barages/La Mongie, Courcheval, La Clusaz, Les Gets, Font Romeu, Les Orres, Les Saisses, Montgenevre, Vars and Le Grand Bornand. Check back tomorrow for an update on conditions.
Switzerland
It will be a sunny today across Switzerland but for the weekend ahead it is snow, snow, snow. This is great news especially for the resorts of Arosa (20/40cm) and Grindelwald (5/15cm) which open this weekend. Lenk (5/25cm) will also be open this weekend and then will reopen on the 10th for daily skiing. At Zermatt (0/65cm) the Rothorn area is going to be open as of the 3rd December, this will be another addition to the already large open ski area. Throughout the other open resorts of Switzerland the conditions are hard and fast, a great base for the forecast snow to fall on.
Italy
The skiing in the open resorts is still going really well supported by fine skies with mild cloud cover today. Cavalese (10/40cm) is open for skiing with good snow cover on the upper slopes and thin cover on the lower slopes. Cervinia has skiing on the glacier linked with Zermatt, although there is currently insufficient snow on the lower slopes for them to open. Cortina (30/60cm) has enough snow over most of the mountain for top to bottom skiing on soft fresh snow. Passo Tonale (50/140cm) has the best snow depth for the Italian resorts, and is has some great skiing and boarding thanks to the snow levels on the upper slopes. Val Senales (20/90cm) also has fine skiing available thanks to the recent snowfalls. Other resorts are also scheduled to open over the next few days including Arabba, Canazei, Cavalese and Selva Gardena.
Andorra
Great news this week in Andorra with Pas de la Casa (20/50cm) and Soldeu El Tarter (20/40cm) open for the first time this season. There is good skiing on soft, fresh snow in the open resorts thanks to new snow received this week. There is also good news as Pal, Arinsal and Arcalis are all scheduled to open on Friday 2nd December with snow depths between 20cm and 50cm.
Norway/Sweden
The situation in Norway is improving daily with snow falling across the area. Geilo (10/10cm) is reporting 5cm of fresh snow this morning and more is going to fall throughout today, tomorrow and Sunday. It is also snowing today in Hemsedal (6/45cm) and the snow is set to stay there until Sunday. Trysil (35/35cm) woke up to 2cm of fresh snow this morning and it also looks set to stay until the end of Friday. Oppdal (30/60cm) will be open this weekend with one lift providing access to the mountain. They had 10cm of snow on the 30th November and they are expecting more snow today. In Sweden Salen (2/35cm) is still skiing well thanks to the recent snow falls, although Stöten is still yet to open for skiing. Äre is yet to open.
Germany
Garmisch (0/70cm) has skiing on Zugspitze, but is not yet open for skiing in the Classic Gebiet area. Lenggries (40/60cm) is also open but this is only at the weekends. Feldberg (30/60cm) has been skiing well this week, and they¡¯re planning to have all of the ski lifts in operation from this weekend. The other resorts in Germany are not open as yet but there is some snow predicted for the weekend.
Bulgaria
The 3 reported Bulgarian resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are yet to open for the 2005/6 season. Unfortunately they do not have snow forecast for the weekend so the opening dates do not look as if they will be bought forward.
Scotland.
Milder temperatures are now being experienced across Scotland, the average temperature is now 1¢ªC and as a result the snow is becoming softer and patchy on the lower slopes. At the Cairngorms (10/50cm) the runs are well groomed but are softening throughout the day due to the increased temperatures, over the weekend they are expecting snow again so hopefully the conditions will be topped up. The situation at Glenshee (9/95cm) and The Lecht (28/95cm) is similar to that of the Cairngorms, snow is forecast for Glenshee but unfortunately not for The Lecht.
USA
The Rockies are completely covered in snow at the moment thanks to the huge amount that has fallen over the last couple of days. There has been anything from 10-25cm in the last 48hrs which means that there is loads of powder to be had. Check out Winter Park and Steamboat for some awesome riding. This is also great news for Deer Valley and Jackson Hole which are both opening on Saturday. Squaw is also due to start the winter |

Monday 5 December 2005 Introduction Well, what a weekend for snowfall in Europe. France has had a good 10cm in most areas, and several resorts have now made a start to their winter seasons. Austria has also benefited from a few snow showers as well. Italy has had a brilliant weekend with snow falling in most resorts over the weekend. This has allowed thirteen more resorts to open, many of which had not planned to open so early. Skiing is still possible in the Scottish resorts, and the Cairngorms have received some fresh snow over the weekend. The snow in Norway has lead to the opening of Lillehammer over the weekend and has also allowed Oppdal to open daily, things can only get better as it just keeps snowing. Things are also looking on the up for the German resorts with good skiing on packed pistes about to be complimented with more snow forecast throughout the week. The good news has continued into Sweden with the opening of Äre, the conditions are limited with only 1 lift but with snow falling all week I am sure this will change imminently. Several Swiss resorts opened up this weekend to some good snow and skiing. More powder predicted for the rest of this week. Canadian resorts have also had a chance to enjoy the new snow, particularly the resorts in Quebec which were suffering last week. The USA is continuing with the trend for good news. Squaw Valley, Sugarbush, Deer Valley and Jackson Hole all opened over the weekend and are reporting great conditions.
Austria Lots of new areas opened their gates for skiing this weekend with some pretty good snow. The huge area of Wilder-Kaiser Brixental has had a great couple of days. The area is accessible from the resorts of Soll, Ellmau, Scheffau, Westendorf, and Hopfgarten, with soft pistes, forty-five lifts open, and a snow depth of 65cm at the top. The rest of the Zillertal also opened this weekend including Zell (10/55cm), Mayrhofen (10/45cm) and Fügen (60/80cm), and with more snow on the way, this weeks skiing should be a lot of fun. Most areas are overcast today with light snow forecast for most of the week, so visibility is likely to be fairly poor.
France It’s been a great couple of days in France with most areas getting their share of the fresh stuff. The snowfall is forecast to continue all week in both the Alps and the Pyrenees. Alpe d’Huez (48/69cm) opened for business with fifteen lifts running and skiing into Vaujauny (20/69cm) possible. Good news in Val d’Isere as well, as they’ve finally started running the lifts. The connection with Tignes is not yet open, but there is plenty of snow at altitude in the resort. Other weekend winter openings included Morzine, Chamrousse and Cauterets. There is some good powder and excellent on piste skiing, but some exposed rocks on the lower slopes according to a personal report from Tignes!
Switzerland There has a mixture of snowfall in Switzerland over the weekend, with some places getting a lot and others just a little. This means powder so there’s some great off piste skiing in places. The snow is forecast to continue throughout the week, so hopefully things will continue to pick up. Arosa, Klosters, Haute Nendaz and Davos opened up this weekend, as did the rest of the Zermatt area for some good skiing at high altitude, but limited by some poor visibility.
Italy Italy has had a real boost this weekend with in excess of 20cm of new snow falling in many resorts. Some resorts are reporting up to 50cm of new snow. This has allowed many new resorts to open including some that had not previously planned to open this early in the season. These thirteen newly opened resorts include Arabba (20/50cm), Bardonecchia (60/60cm), Bormio (40/125cm), Canazei (40/50cm), Cesana Torinese 30/40cm), Claviere (30/60cm), Livigno (40/70cm), Madesimo (60/80cm), Madonna (60/100cm), Pila (30/40cm), Sauze d’Oulx (50/50cm), Selva Gardena (50/70cm) and Sestriere (50/50cm). The outlook in Italy is also great with more snow predicted through the week.
Andorra Conditions are on the up in Andorra this week. Snow fell across the country and this has lead to an increase in the number of lifts and pistes open for skiing. 10cm of snow was recorded on Saturday at Arinsal (30/50cm), Pal (30/50cm) and Pas de la Casa (25/60cm) and 15cm fell at Soldeu (25/60cm). The week ahead shows more of the same, snow showers are expected everyday apart from at Arinsal which means that the ski area will continue to increase.
Norway/Sweden Lillehammer (5/20cm) is now open for the winter season, they have three lifts open and it is set to snow all week which is definitely needed at this stage. There is more good news at Oppdal (30/60cm) as it is now open daily with three lifts operating today giving access to packed pistes, but the snow from the 1st December is holding well. It is snowing today providing a fresh dusting to the pistes. Conditions at Geilo (15/15cm) and Hemsedal (25/45cm) are improving, Geilo has snow forecast everyday and Hemsedal is reporting 5cm of fresh snow this morning. Äre (0/20cm) is now open for the winter season with one lift giving access to one run. They have snow forecast for this week and this will hopefully lead to more of the resort opening. 3cm of snow has fallen in the last day at Salen (7/35cm) and it looks like the snow has set in for the next few days.
Germany This week is looking promising for the German resorts with light snow forecast throughout the week. Feldberg (20/50) is skiing well on a bas of packed snow. Garmisch-Partenkirchen (20/65) also has good snow with softer snow on the upper slopes. Lenggries (35/50cm) also has a good amount of snow and this looks as though it should further improve with more snow predicted this week across the German resorts. Spitzingsee (35/55cm) has some great skiing despite the limited lifts in operation. Reit im Winkl (30/70cm) is closed at the minute as full time skiing does not start until this coming weekend. Oberstdorf and Berchtesgaden are both yet to open for skiing and boarding.
Bulgaria The 3 reported Bulgarian resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are yet to open for the 2005/6 season. The week ahead is forecast to be mostly clear although snow could fall on Wednesday in Bansko and Borovets.
Scotland The mild temperatures are still an issue at the Scottish resorts. This has not prevented the Cairngorms (10/52cm) from receiving more snow over the weekend. This is providing some fine fresh snow skiing on the higher slopes. There are limited lifts in operation due to the lack of overall cover. Glenshee (0/70cm) is still open although only the Sunnyside slopes are complete. The Lecht (24/87cm) has the best overall conditions with the best skiing and boarding on Eagle and Snowy-owland Robin. Glencoe and The Nevis Range are yet to open for skiing.
USA It has been another weekend of snow for the USA. There has also been more good news with the opening of Deer Valley (42/57cm), the first week of the season will be bright and sunny. Jackson Hole (87/97cm) also opened on Saturday, the first day of the season was knee deep powder and it is snowing today with heavy snowfalls predicted to continue throughout the week. Sugarbush (10/60cm) opened at the weekend and had 10cm of fresh powder yesterday. The other resort to open was Squaw Valley (15/84cm), they have eleven lifts open with access to packed trails for some hard and fast riding, the week ahead is sunny with light snow showers on Wednesday.
Canada Temperatures have finally dropped in the resorts of Mont-Sainte Anne and Tremblant, and both have had between 15cm and 20cm on snow over the past two days, so some fresh powder is there for the taking. Meanwhile in the rest of Canada there is some great skiing on soft groomed pistes due to the low temperatures and flurries of snow. Panorama Mountain is looking good |

Thursday 8 December 2005 Introduction Light snow has been falling over Europe for a few days now, ensuring that the good start to the season continues. Several more French resorts are opening this weekend, and today’s snow forecast should ready the base levels for skiing. Austrian resorts have enjoying some snowfall too, but it is still advisable to ski on the higher altitude pistes. Skiing in Scotland is very limited and without snow forecast over the weekend it does not look like much improvement is going to be seen. Germany has seen an improvement in conditions this week with snow each day. The skiing in Sweden and Norway is OK at the moment, although more snow would be good. More and more Swiss areas are opening up, and after a week of snow, this weekend should be a good one for skiing. The skies are clearing over Canada offering a chance to enjoy the recent snowfalls. The good news in the USA just never stops, there has been snow throughout the week and it is going to be a sunny weekend so get out and enjoy the powder. Lincoln Peak will open and Sugarbush and Durango resort will also open on the 10th December.
Austria It’s been a good few days for snow in Austria, with some spots getting up to 20cm in the last few days. Today is mostly a mixture of cloud and flurries of snow, interspersed with moments of sunshine. Mayrhofen (15/65cm) opened today for skiing, but stick to the upper slopes for the best snow. This is the case with most of the lower Austrian resorts particularly in the west. There are however plenty of the higher and glacier resorts that can offer some great skiing on upper bases of over 100cm – Kaprun, Obertauern and Hintertux have some awesome packed powder skiing at altitude, to name but a few.
France The conditions in the Alps today are mostly cloud and heavy snow, so look out for powder, but watch out for poor visibility! Some places can expect between fifteen and twenty centimetres. Things should clear up after today and the weekend openings of resorts including Serre Chevalier, Flaine and Meribel can look forward to some clear skies and nice skiing on the new snow. The best spots to ski in the meantime are probably Avoriaz, with an upper base of 130cm, and Argentiere (25/85cm), which is also accessible from Chamonix via the skibus. Look out for some good riding in the Pyrenees as well, where light snow is refreshing the pistes as we speak.
Switzerland Most Swiss resorts have had a light dusting of snow over the last two days, therefore skiing is mainly on well groomed pistes. The Gstaad/Les Diablerets glacier is closed for skiing today due to the high winds, but the lower areas of these two resorts are due to open this weekend. Most other resorts have patchy lower slopes, so stick to the higher pistes. Things should improve with the forecast snow today and tomorrow. Saas Fee offers some good on piste skiing with a solid upper base depth of 100cm. Leysin and Les Mosses are due to open at the weekend, with current base depths of 50cm and 55cm respectively. Check back tomorrow for an update.
Italy The skiing conditions are varied in Italy today. On the French side, up to 10cm of new snow is expected to fall today so look out for a bit of powder in Courmayeur (30/50cm) and La Thuile (40/50cm). Moving eastwards however visibility is likely to be flat due to overcast skies, and skiing is fast on hard machine groomed pistes. Light snow should refresh in some areas, but the weekend is forecast to be sunny and clear.
Andorra It has been a week of constant snow in Andorra. Snow was reported this morning in all of the resorts we report on. It is going to be a perfect weekend to enjoy the fresh snow in Andorra. It will be sunny from tomorrow across the area apart from Pas de la Casa (25/50cm) and Soldeu (30/60cm) where the snow will continue before brightening up for Saturday and Sunday.
Norway/Sweden Good news in Salen (15/40cm), Sweden, with Stöten now open for skiing making the three Salen areas all open to some extent. Åre (10/30cm) also has another lift open, making the total two. More snow would be good over the Swedish reports, which might be delivered by the Snow Gods over the weekend. Norway is also skiing quite well despite limited snow depth, with Voss being the only reported resort yet to open. The snow forecast is similar to that for Sweden with more predicted over the weekend.
Germany There has been a dusting of snow over the last couple of days at Lenggries (35/70cm) and Garmisch (20/65cm). Spitzingsee (50/75cm) has had 20cm in the last few days a great improvement to the small open area at the resort. Reit im Winkl (30/70cm) remains closed at the minute as full time skiing does not start until this coming weekend. The outlook for the weekend is promising with a dusting of snow expected each day but it will be predominantly sunny. Oberstdorf and Berchtesgaden are both yet to open for skiing and boarding.
Bulgaria The 3 reported Bulgarian resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are still yet to open for the 2005/6 season. Up to 5cm is forecast for today though, and more is due next week.
Scotland Conditions in Scotland have not improved this week. The mild temperatures have caused the snow to melt and unfortunately Glenshee (0/20cm) has had to close temporarily until more snow falls. Conditions at The Cairngorms (10/52cm) will be hard in the morning following the hard frost overnight and will soften up later in the day. The Lecht (20/85cm) has the best skiing and the groomers have been out in force to provide the best possible conditions.
USA The snow just keeps falling in the USA. It has fallen across the states in the last few days with Telluride (80/90cm) reporting 30cm overnight and The Canyons (20/155cm) had 40cm. The conditions continue to improve with powder to be found in all resorts. Grooming has started in force so for those of you who prefer to cruise the trails head for Beaver Creek (80/122cm) or Crested Butte (100/120cm) for some hard and fast skiing. There is good news at Sugarbush (10/60cm) where Lincoln Peak will open this Saturday 10th December. Durango (36/50cm) will open this weekend, it is currently snowing there and they have had 18cm of snow in the last week.
Canada The recent heavy snowfalls have let up a little today offering a great chance to enjoy the early season conditions. Most skiing is on nicely groomed pistes, but some pockets of powder can be found. Mont-Sainte Anne (25/40cm) is still a little patchy so stay high here. Panorama (27/57cm) is opening tomorrow, and with sunshine forecast, it should be a good start to the season. Check back tomorrow for an update on conditions.
European Weather Outlook Its going to be a changeable weekend in Austria, alternating between clear skies, cloud and snow showers. After heavy snow today, things will clear up in France tomorrow, which is forecast to continue into early next week. A similar situation exists in Switzerland, but most areas will have to wait until Saturday for their share of the sunshine. There is more snow predicted over the weekend to join the snow that has blessed some of the resorts in Norway and Sweden this week. The Italian Alps can expect a changeable weekend with snow and cloud. Saturday however is forecast to be clear and sunny. In Germany it is going to be predominantly sunny this weekend with the odd snow shower. It will snow today in Andorra and then brighten up for the weekend with the sun shining overhead. The mild temperatures will continue over the weekend in Scotland, it will be cloudy with the odd sunny spell and any precipitation will be in the form of rain.
North American Weather Outlook Mont Sainte-Anne and Tremblant will be overcast all weekend, with light snow falling. Other areas are forecast to be a mixture but mostly sunny |

Monday 12 December 2005 Introduction Skiing in Europe is definitely more pleasant of late due to the mixture of cloud and sunshine, but some more snow would certainly make things better. Many French resorts started their lifts this weekend. There is a good variety of skiing on packed pistes in the Italian resorts. Skiing is also fast in Austria where the groomers have been doing their stuff. In Scotland the only area open for skiing is the Cairngorms due to a lack of snow with the milder temperatures. In Germany Berchtesgaden and Oberstdorf have now opened for the winter season and Reit im Winkl is now open daily. The Swedish and Norwegian resorts are still skiing well, although more snow would really help. After the weekend’s traffic the pistes in Switzerland are also in need of more snow. In Canada, the clear skies over many resorts mean that it’s time to enjoy some of that recent snowfall. It is going to be a sunny week in the USA, there is more good news with Durango and Sugarbush both open for skiing.
Austria It’s been clear skies and great skiing this weekend in Austria. The piste groomers have been out and conditions should be right for fast riding on packed powder snow. Some pockets of powder can be found off pistes, particularly in the higher areas, but watch out for rocks and patchy snow cover as a solid off-piste base still needs to build up in lower resorts. That said there is some great snow in Bad Hofgastein (30/100cm), Flachau (50/100cm) and Obertauern (95/120cm), as well as on the main Austrian glaciers. More good news as snowfall is due to arrive tomorrow and will get heavier as the week progresses.
France There is some fast skiing in the Alps today under overcast skies and flat light. Val d’Isere (39/39cm), Tignes (28/60cm) and Val Thorens (60/70cm) are all wind swept off-piste and hard packed on-piste. Resorts in the Southern Alps such as Risoul (55/60cm) and Vars (50/60cm) should offer a bit of softness today and tomorrow with up to 10cm of snow forecast. In the Pyrenees the best skiing is on the groomed pistes, but some powder is to be found. La Plagne (50/90cm) and Meribel (30/50cm) opened this weekend, as did Flaine (55/125cm). The rest of Le Grand Massif (Les Carroz and Samoëns) is due to open this coming weekend, as are many others, hopefully in time with the forecast snow on Friday.
Switzerland The snowy start to the winter season has come to a bit of a standstill in Switzerland. The light snow at the end of last week offered some good piste skiing but now conditions have turned a little hard and icy. This means that the best skiing is still on the glaciers at Saas Fee (27/105cm), Zermatt (15/70cm) and Les Diablerets/Gstaad (30/130cm), especially since much more of the Gstaad area opened this weekend. Check out the snowcross and snowpark in Saas Fee and the monster halfpipe in Flims/Laax for some freestyle.
Italy The majority of skiing in Italy is on packed pistes, providing some great fast skiing. The temperature has risen slightly, although it is still hanging below freezing. More snow would be good and this might happen with resorts such as Arabba (40/70cm), Cortina (50/75cm) and Selva Gardena (50/70cm) predicted snowfall through the week. The other resorts should still get some snow but mostly towards next weekend.
Andorra It will continue to snow in Andorra today. Pal (35/55cm), Arinsal (35/55cm) and Soldeu (30/60cm) are all reporting 9cm of new snow from last Friday. The conditions in Andorra just continue to improve with more lifts open at Arinsal. All the resorts are reporting powder both on and off the pistes. The outlook for the rest of the week is predominantly sunny with the odd cloud dotting the sky.
Norway/Sweden Norway is still skiing OK, although they could have done with some more snow over the weekend. The exceptions to this are Lillehammer (10/35cm) that received 5cm of new snow yesterday, and Voss that got a dusting of new snow on Saturday. Voss is still closed despite this new flurry. The other resorts are skiing well despite slightly limiting snow cover, with good skiing on packed pistes. It is snowing in Åre (10/30cm), Sweden, today which will really help the surface conditions. This should be further enhanced with snow predicted right through the week. Sälen (15/40cm) is also set to some snow this week, so fingers crossed.
Germany It is good news for Germany today wit the opening of two more resorts and also the reopening of Reit im Winkl (30/70cm). Berchtesgaden (15/100cm) has now opened for the winter season, there are limited lifts open but the conditions are reported as being good. Oberstdorf (20/40cm) has also now opened and the conditions there are similar to Berchtesgaden, good but limited lifts in operation at the moment. Reit im Winkl (30/70cm) has now opened on a daily basis and the number of lifts in operation at both Feldberg (30/65cm) and Lenggries (35/75cm) have increased.
Bulgaria The 3 reported Bulgarian resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are still yet to open for the 2005/6 season.
Scotland The only skiing today in Scotland can be found at the Cairngorms (10/52cm), the snow is frozen and the best skiing can be found on the groomed runs. Glenshee (0/18cm) is still temporarily closed due to lack of snow along with The Lecht (10/75cm). The Lecht are reporting that they only need a small amount of snow to allow them to reopen. At the Nevis Range the warm temperatures have caused more of the snow to melt and so it still remains closed, as does Glencoe.
USA It is going to be a sunny week in the USA. A few resorts have reported snow in the last 24 hours while most have had a sunny weekend leading to packed hard and fast trails. Durango (31/46cm) is now open following the first day of the season Saturday, they have one lift open and are reporting top to bottom skiing. There is great news at Sugarbush (10/90cm) as they have had 33cm of snow in the last 72 hours so conditions are rapidly improving following the opening for the winter season. It is snowing at Killington (60/75cm) and they have had 3cm in the last 24 hours, the snow clouds should leave later today for a couple of sunny days in which to enjoy the fresh snow. Aspen (75/105cm), Beaver Creek (65/112cm) and Crested Butte (100/120cm) are all expecting snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Canada Conditions in Canada at the moment are providing something for everyone. Whistler (58/78cm) is still skiing very fast on hard groomed pistes in perfect sunshine, as are Fernie (82/102cm) and Panorama (27/55cm), which also has a snowpark up and running. Things look set to change though as the light snow falling in the more easterly resorts makes its way over the above areas to refresh the pistes. Kimberly and Kicking Horse are opening this weekend, and conditions are looking very promising.
European Weather Outlook The outlook for the Alps is mostly clear with patches of cloud. This is forecast to bring flurries of snow across parts of France and Switzerland, and slightly more for Austria. There is some snow expected this week across the resorts of Sweden and Norway. After a predominately dry weekend the Italians must be looking forward to the snow predicted this week and through next weekend. Light snow showers are expected to fall tomorrow and Wednesday in Germany. It is snowing today in Andorra but as of tomorrow the week will be sunny with the odd cloudy spell. It is going to be a mild week in Scotland and there is not any snow forecast over the next couple of days.
North American Weather Outlook The Canadian mountains can look forward to clear skies, sunshine and temperatures well below freezing. Some resorts will get a dusting of snow mid week, namely Fernie and Banff/Lake Louise among others. It is going to be a mainly sunny week in the USA, Aspen, |

Thursday 15 December 2005 Introduction Good news as most of Europe will get at least some much needed snow this weekend. Skiing in both France and Switzerland is mostly on hard pack. Austria is a little better after the dusting it had earlier in the week. The Italian resorts are still skiing on packed snow that could be improved with some snow forecast for the weekend. The only area open in Scotland is the Cairngorms, although the Nevis Range is expecting to open their Gondola from 20th December with skiing too, provided there’s adequate snow cover. Conditions in Germany will improve over the next few days as snow is on its way. There will be blizzard conditions throughout the country on Friday so it is important to wrap up warm. Some fresh snow is predicted for Norway and Sweden, although some resorts are looking more promising than others. In Bulgaria it is predicted that Pamporovo will open in the next couple of days, kicking off the winter season. Clear skies over Canada, which is great news for Kicking Horse and Kimberly which are opening on Friday and Saturday respectively. The forecast snow has arrived in the USA and there is more good news with Killington opening both Picco Mountain and Bear Mountain this weekend.
Austria Conditions have not been too bad over the past couple of days in Austria, many places experiencing between five and ten centimetres of snow, followed by sunshine yesterday and today. Albach (15/65cm) had 20cm on Tuesday making the groomed pistes nice and soft for skiing. 10cm fell in the Wilder-Kaiser area comprising Soll (20/80cm) and Scheffau (30/90cm), among others, where the pistes are great on the upper slopes. The Wildschönau area, Niederau (30/50cm) and Auffach (40/70cm), opens fully this weekend, so check back for conditions tomorrow. There is some great news though as things will turn around later today. Huge snowfalls are forecast, up to 50cm over the entire weekend. Watch out for high winds as well, it’s going to feel pretty cold!
France Clear blue skies, beautiful sunshine and packed solid pistes is the story in most French resorts at the moment. Watch out for patchy and icy snow on lower slopes as well. Some new snow certainly wouldn’t go amiss. This said, Risoul (60/65cm) had some snow on Monday, so the groomed pistes are pretty nice. Avoriaz (120/120cm) still has great snow cover as well. Some other good news as well, as things should pick up in the more northerly Alpine resorts at the weekend with snow showers predicted. This should hopefully make things better for the numerous areas due to open, including Les Arcs (30/60cm), and the remaining areas in Le Grand Massif (Samoëns and Les Carroz) and Le Plagne (Montalbert and Montchavin/Les Coches). Check back for updates tomorrow.
Switzerland The skiing in Switzerland is pretty heavy going at the moment, with most places in desperate need of snow. Hard conditions on the upper slopes and patchy on the lower ones seems to be the order of the day. Champery (15/90cm) is now linked up to the rest of Les Portes du Soleil, so much more can be explored. Elsewhere the best skiing is still in Saas Fee (20/110cm) and on the Gstaad/Les Diablerets glacier. As is the case in Austria though, loads of snow is forecast in Switzerland for the weekend, particularly in the eastern Alps, with up to 50cm due to fall in some resorts.
Italy Conditions in Italy remain packed with lots of hard and fast skiing available. As predicted the snow has fallen in Arabba (40/70cm), Cortina (35/70cm) and Selva Gardena (50/70cm). Unfortunately this has not been at a significant level and so the packed pistes now have a dusting of snow on the top. There is snow predicted across the Italian resorts over the weekend, with some resorts looking to receive a decent amount of snow such as Canazei (40/60cm) with snow predicted for the next 5 days.
Andorra It is going to be a bright and sunny today across the resorts of Andorra. The conditions have held well following the snow earlier in the week at Pal (35/55cm), Arinsal (35/55cm) and Soldeu (30/60cm). All the resorts are reporting powder conditions and with snow forecast for Saturday it looks like the week leading up to Christmas will be a beautiful winter wonderland.
Norway/Sweden Norway still really needs some new snow to boost the snow levels on the mountains. The best forecast for snow in Norway is Oppdal (30/50cm) that has already had 20cm of snow today, and has more forecast throughout the weekend. The other Norwegian resorts have some snow forecast, but not of the magnitude of Oppdal. Voss is planned on being open for skiing over the weekend. The skiing in Sweden, at Åre (14/15cm) and Sälen (12/40cm), is also in need of more snow with the only real skiing available on packed groomed runs.
Germany It is going to be a snowy weekend in Germany. This will be welcomed with open arms as it has not snowed in many of the resorts for a week. Spitzingsee (30/60cm) has lost snow in the last week due to milder temperatures but with 40cm of new snow forecast for the weekend there is going to be a dramatic turn around in the conditions. Feldberg (30/65cm) and Garmisch (25/65cm) both have fast skiing on hard packed pistes and they also have lots of fresh snow on the way.
Bulgaria The 3 reported Bulgarian resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are still yet to open for the 2005/6 season. Pamporovo (10/20cm) is saying that it will open in the next few days, which will be helped by the fact that snow is forecast across Bulgaria over the weekend.
Scotland There are two lifts open at Cairngorm (4/47cm) although only the Ptarmigan Bowl has enough snow cover for Snowsports. The other areas in the highlands are all shut for skiing due to lack of snow cover. There is snow forecast for all of the resorts over the weekend, but not enough to provide that much extra cover.
USA It will be a sunny day across most of the USA. This is great news and means that it will be a perfect ski day in which to enjoy the dump of powder in a few of the resorts. Snow was forecast for Wednesday and the prediction has been proven correct. Big Sky (85/110cm) has had 20cm in the last 24 hours, Copper Mountain (130/155cm) 20cm, Crested Butte (100/125cm) 28cm and Vail (90/119cm) 22cm, all of the resorts are reporting powder conditions, it looks like it is going to be a great start to the weekend. There is also good news at Deer Valley (67/97cm) as they now have 17 operational lifts in the resort. Killington (45/70cm) also has good news for this weekend as Picco Mountain will open on Friday and on Saturday Bear Mountain will open. These openings mean that there will be more than ninety trails open and 22 lifts.
Canada There’s some good skiing in Canada at the moment after the snow that fell earlier this week. Panorama (28/55cm) and Mont-Saint Anne (25/40cm) are bathed in sunshine and skiing is hard and fast. If you want more, head to the Banff Area. Sunshine Village (68/88cm) and Banff/Lake Louise (58/78cm) both offer good snow both on and off piste. Kimberly and Kicking Horse are planning to open their lifts this weekend for the winter skiing to beautiful clear skies and sunshine.
European Weather Outlook Good news in Austria and Switzerland as up to 50cm of snow is predicted to fall in some areas over the next three days. The more northerly French Alps will also see some of this, but not quite as much unfortunately. The Pyrenees can look forward to a dusting on Saturday. The best outlook in Norway is at Oppdal with good snowfall reported today and lots more expected over the weekend. The other resorts have only limited amounts of snow predicted, with sun and cloud over the resorts. Sweden has a similar situation with a fair amount of fresh snow forecast for Åre over the weekend and only the chance of a ve |

Monday 19 December 2005 Introduction Well, what a weekend for snowfall in Europe. The Austrian Alps are totally white as loads of snow has dumped on the mountains. A similar scenario occurred on the Swiss side of things with around 50cm falling in some Areas. Most of France wasn’t quite as lucky, but several places enjoyed some fresh powder. There has been a dramatic increase in conditions over the weekend in Germany and Italy is still skiing well and some resorts have fresh snow from the weekend. There has been an average of 20cm of new snow through out the country. This is set to continue with more snow forecast throughout the week. Fresh snow has been dropped over most of the Norwegian resorts over the weekend, really helping the surface conditions. Sweden is still skiing well and Åre has had a boost with some fresh snow. There is presently no skiing possible in the Scottish resorts due to recent mild temperatures. Unfortunately the Bulgarian season did not start over the weekend as all resorts are reporting no skiing conditions. It is going to be a week for those wishing to practise fast carving turns in Andorra as there will be sunny skies and packed pistes. It’s mostly well groomed pistes under clear skies on the menu in Canada, apart from a dusting that fell over the Quebec resorts. Yet more snow has fallen over the USA resorts, Snowbird has had the most snowfall 30cm in the last 24 hours.
Austria There isn’t a mountain in Austria that hasn’t had a shed load of snow this weekend, and in a lot of resorts it just won’t give up! Anything between twenty and seventy centimetres has fallen. The Arlberg resorts of Lech (105/150cm), St Anton (60/115cm) and Zürs (105/150cm) have had about 50cm of snow, so there is plenty throughout these areas. The deepest snow, at 254cm, is up on the Kaprun Glacier, and most of the area is open including the Maiskogel lifts in the town centre. The general conditions are of soft, powdery pistes, but watch out for natural hazards on the lower slopes, as in some cases a base still needs to be established. If you are riding in Austria today, make sure you check the local avalanche warning before you go as well.
France The French resorts have had a mixture of weather over the weekend. The northern Alps have had some good new snow, the biggest snowfalls being in Flaine (50cm) and Chamonix/Argentiere (60cm). The weather today is reported to be mostly clear with some clouds, and since temperatures are fairly low, the skiing should be pretty good wherever you’re heading. The resorts that have had snow will offer some off piste riding, and the pistes should be well groomed in those that haven’t. Our reps have been out in the French resorts this weekend, and have been generally reporting back positive early season conditions!
Switzerland The snow has arrived! Lots of Swiss resorts had a good dump of snow over the weekend, few more so than Davos (75/107cm), Klosters (80/100cm), Arosa (70/100cm) and Verbier 45/85cm), where around 50cm fell. It has also been quite windy the past couple of days, so whilst there is some good snow around, the higher and more exposed areas could be pretty wind blown and icy. The skies should clear up today and tomorrow for good visibility, and low temperatures will keep the snow and make skiing very pleasurable.
Italy Italy is skiing well thanks for cold temperatures. There has also been some new snow over the weekend at some of the resorts. Canazei (40/60cm), Cavalese (40/85cm), Livigno (44/100cm), Madesimo (40/60cm), Selva Gardena (40/70cm) and Val Senales (50/100cm) all received fresh snow over the weekend, while Val Senales, Selva Gardena and Cortina (35/75cm) have snow predicted this week.
Andorra Andorra is going to have a bright sunny week. The conditions in all the resorts are hard and fast as there has not been any snow since the 9th December. Soldeu (30/60cm) is reporting hard on piste conditions while the snow depths at Pas de la Casa (20/40cm) have decreased since last week due to the bright sunny weather. Conditions at Arcalis (30/70cm), Arinsal (35/55cm) and Pal (35/55cm) are packed so it is going to be a week for practising the carving turns throughout Andorra.
Norway/Sweden There has been some fresh snow over the weekend at the Norwegian resorts of Geilo (15/15cm), Lillehammer (15/35cm), Oppdal (50/70cm) and Voss (35/35cm). This has really helped the limited snow depths. Voss is this week continuing with its weekend skiing schedule, being closed through the week. Åre (30/46cm), Sweden, has had some fresh snow over the weekend to really help conditions. Sälen (12/40cm) is skiing on packed snow cover, although they too may receive some fresh snow by the end of the week.
Germany Germany has been transformed over the weekend with an average of 20cm of new snow in each resort. Lenggries (70/100cm) is reporting 35cm of new snow while Garmisch (50/90cm) has had 25cm. Feldberg (50/80cm) now has thirteen lifts open following 20cm of new snow. It also looks like the conditions are going to further improve with more snow showers today which will continue through the rest of the week.
Bulgaria The three reported Bulgarian resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are still yet to open for the 2005/6 season. Pamporovo (30/50cm) unfortunately still reporting no skiing conditions despite the snow that fell over the weekend.
Scotland There is currently no skiing available in the Scottish resorts due to mild temperatures over the past couple of weeks. More snow is desperately needed to complete the snow cover required. There might still be uplift possible at Cairngorm on the funicular but more snowfall is needed for snowsports to be allowed. The gondola at the Nevis Range is planned to re-open tomorrow (20th) after pre-season maintenance but snow sports will only be permitted if enough snow arrives.
USA Snow will continue to fall across most of the USA. It has been a brilliant weekend and those hunting the first tracks will be in luck with many resorts reporting fresh snow. Snowbird (145/165cm) has had 30cm of fresh snow in the last 24 hours. Deer Valley (75/102cm) is revelling in 17cm of new snow as they now have twenty lifts in operation. The same is true for Winter Park (150/160cm) following 24cm of snow and this has allowed twenty three lifts to now be in operation. Aspen (81/116cm) has not had snow but the conditions on the groomed runs are perfect to practice carving turns. The USA will continue to improve over the week as more snow is forecast over the next few days.
Canada The low temperatures in Canada are maintaining the good snow on the pistes, and allowing resorts to keep the snow cannons running. Blue Mountain (40/60cm), Mont-Sainte Anne (25/45cm) and Tremblant (40/60cm) all had some light snow over the weekend, softening up the pistes a bit. Kicking Horse (59/79cm) and Kimberley (36/56cm) opened this weekend, and both are reporting some great on piste skiing. The weather is forecast to change tomorrow or Wednesday, bringing some light snow to most of the Canadian resorts.
European Weather Outlook More snow is forecast to fall all week in the Salzburg and Tirol regions of Austria and after a clear couple of days, other resorts will get some too. All of France will be fairly clear over the next two days apart from a few clouds here and there, and Switzerland will also clear up as the week progresses. Norway has some snow forecast for this coming week, although it isn’t really enough to write home about. More snow would definitely be welcome. In Sweden the forecast was pretty spot on for Åre with fresh snow falling over the weekend. This week looks mostly dry although they may get more snow around mid week. Sälen is forecast snow for a little later in the week. There is some light snow predicted in |

Thursday 22 December 2005 Introduction The best snow in Europe is still in Austria, where snow continues to fall. French areas have some good weather and good pistes, but more snow would not go amiss. Conditions in Germany just keep getting better and better with powder conditions dominating most resorts. Italy has not received new snow over the past couple of days, but there is still plenty of good skiing on firm packed pistes. Conditions in Switzerland remain hard and fast and for the best snow it is recommended to head to the upper slopes. More snow is still needed in Norway but the unsettled weather over the weekend will hopefully bring the dump required. Sweden is still skiing well and Sälen has had a boost with some fresh snow. There is presently no skiing possible in the Scottish resorts due to recent mild temperatures and some rain. The three reported resorts in Bulgaria are now all open for skiing, and there has been snow yesterday at Bansko and Borovets. Andorra is also skiing well with packed conditions on piste. Things are improving in Canada with new snow falling, mostly over Whistler and Blackcomb. There has been a dusting of snow across most of the USA and the most snow has fallen at Arapahoe where they have had 20cm.
Austria Good snow in Austria this week, everyday it has been snowing a little so that the good early season conditions continue. The heavy snow that fell at the weekend has now also been packed down and has made a good base, over 100cm in most areas, for future snowfall. Anywhere around the Zillertal area is skiing pretty well at the moment, Mayrhofen (40/120cm) has all lifts open and great conditions, and Zell am Ziller (20/130cm) is also very good. Many places still have a few powder tracks to find as well. Snowfall looks good for the next couple of days, and skiing should be good on Saturday when it is forecast to brighten up over pretty much all of Austria.
France Many of the resorts in France, particularly in the Alps, could do with a little more snow as lower altitude slopes are wearing a bit thin or being maintained by snow cannons. That is not to say that there isn’t good skiing though. The groomers are doing their stuff and keeping the pistes in good condition, and several resorts have depths of over 100cm on the upper slopes. Chamonix and Argentiere (40/110cm) have most of their lifts running and are reported to have very good piste conditions, and some powder amongst the trees. Val d’Isere (37/37cm) and Tignes (37/60cm) are enjoyable to ski, despite not having the snow levels of other Alpine resorts. In the Pyrenees, the sun is shining, making skiing at Bareges/La Mongie (90/100cm) very good. More good news as the snow is forecast to return early next week, after a sunny Christmas weekend.
Switzerland Switzerland is the place to go for skiing on well groomed runs and to practice carving turns. There is a chance that the pistes will be refreshed in the early part of next week after a cloudy weekend with the odd sunny spell. Lenzerheide (105/150m) and Davos (76/115cm) have the best snow cover but as with all the Swiss resorts it is best to head to the upper slopes.
Italy The firm conditions throughout the Italian resorts are providing some great on-piste action. The only shortfall is that there is not always sufficient snow for really good off-piste conditions. This might change a little over next week with some light snow fall predicted for after the weekend.
Andorra Andorra has some fine packed snow on piste throughout the resorts. This weekend will see mostly clear skies to provide some fantastic cold and clear ski weather, although some cloud can be expected towards the end of the weekend.
Norway/Sweden The snow depths continue to be limited in Norway and the best skiing is on the packed pistes. Lillehammer (15/35cm) had a dusting of 2cm on the 21st December. More snow is forecast over the weekend and hopefully at Voss (40/40cm) the rain forecast on Saturday will turn to snow so that they will be able to open on a daily basis. More snow has fallen during the week at Åre (30/46cm, this has only been a fresh dusting but will help the rather limited snow cover. Slope conditions have improved at Sälen (17/45cm) with some fresh snow and they are now reporting powder snow on the slopes.
Germany It has continued to snow across Germany over the last few days which has continued to improve the situation across the country just in time for Christmas. Oberstdorf (20/130cm) now has twenty two lifts open and fresh powder everywhere, it is definitely one of the resorts to head for. Reit im Winkl (100/220cm) just gets better and better under more snow, there was a fresh dusting of 3cm on the 20th December and more snow today so the powder conditions are going to dominate over the weekend. More snow is on its way over the weekend across the country, if you want a white Christmas head to the mountains.
Bulgaria The three Bulgarian resorts of Bansko (40/65cm), Borovets (45/75cm) and Pamporovo (55/75cm) are now open. The skiing has really improved with new snow falling yesterday in Bansko and Borovets.
Scotland There are no Scottish Ski Resorts open for skiing as the temperatures have been pretty mild and the rain today is not helping the cause. This cloud is not forecast to bring any redeeming quantities of snow yet. Let’s hope that the temperatures drop sometime soon, possibly as we move into next week according to the forecasts.
USA There has been a dusting of snow throughout the North American resorts in the last 24 hours. Arapahoe Basin (145/150cm) has had 20cm over the last day. Other resorts have had between 3cm and 5cm, Copper Mountain (150/172cm), Jackson Hole (105/115cm) and Loveland (115/150cm) are just a few or these resorts. Mammoth (150/200cm) has excellent powder conditions both on and off the trails. The Christmas weekend is going to have snowy showers with sunny spells, perfect weather to enjoy the great fresh powder.
Canada Snow everywhere in Canada yesterday and today, and a welcome refreshing of the pistes too! Pistes are mostly soft and well groomed for on piste riding pleasure. The mild temperatures brought rain in Whistler (61/71cm) yesterday, but our Rep out there assured us the snow was holding up well against it. More good news as well since Whistler is predicted to get loads of snow today as the temperatures have dropped. In Quebec, Tremblant (30/90cm) and Mont-Sainte Anne (30/60cm) temperatures are pretty low, and new snow means that conditions are improving all the time. Wrap up warm though!
European Weather Outlook Continuous snow is predicted to fall for the next week in Austria, at a maximum of 7cm a day, with the exception of Christmas Eve, when skies are forecast to clear. Clear skies and light clouds in France, with snow due to return after the weekend. Switzerland will have an overcast weekend with a chance of snow in the early part of next week, and similar conditions can be expected in Italy. The skies will be cloudy with some sunny spells through the weekend, but light snowfalls can be expected next week. Norway is forecast to have snow for most of the weekend, this will be very welcome as the snow cover at present is very limited. In Sweden there will be snow on Friday and Sunday with Saturday remaining clear and sunny. It is forecast for rain today in Scotland, and the mild temperatures mean that this precipitation will not bring the much needed snow. It will continue to snow over the weekend in Germany apart from on Saturday where there will be a mixture of sun and cloudy spells.
North American Weather Outlook Mostly snow forecast in Canada for the next few days, heavy and windy in some places, so look forward to some fresh powder. The weekend ahead is going to be a mixture of sun, clouds and sno |

Thursday 29 December 2005 Introduction The temperatures are very low across the whole of Europe today, so make sure you cover up and stay warm. Snow has fallen significantly in Austria and parts of Italy, and sprinkled a dusting over France and Switzerland. Powder skiing in places, hard and fast in others. It is a powder day in Germany following snow in the last few days, for fresh tracks head to Berchtesgaden following 15cm of snow overnight. It will snow throughout Norway this weekend and hopefully will allow more of Voss to be open on a daily basis. Sälen had 10cm of fresh snow this morning and it is now powder conditions throughout the resort. There are now two runs open at The Lecht and with more snow forecast following the sprinkling of last night, the season may be set to recommence. Conditions are set to improve in Bulgaria with 15cm of snow forecast for Bansko on Friday and throughout the area. It is set to start snowing tomorrow in Andorra which will hopefully improve the conditions from hard to fresh. Canadian riding is good both on and off piste and getting better with new snow, especially in Whistler. The USA is the place to be this weekend for powder monkeys, there is no where better to start the New Year.
Austria A big drop in temperatures in Austria means that if you are out skiing today, make sure you wrap up warm! It is overcast over most areas, with some snow falling. Most pistes have a soft top layer, but take care for the hard exposed base in places. There is still a fair bit of fresh powder around though. Head to Kitzbühel/Kirchberg (75/108cm) where 15cm fell yesterday and today and all the lifts are running. Obertauern (150/200cm) is also great for skiing both on and off piste.
France Some snow has fallen in France today and yesterday, but skiing remains on fairly solid packed pistes. Good for carving, but not much powder around and lower slopes suffering in places. It’s very cold as well in most areas so lots of hot drink stops are needed! For the best snow, head to the Portes du Soleil. Avoriaz (80/100cm) and Morzine (50/110cm) had 10cm of snow and some good riding. Cauterets (25/100cm) in the Pyrenees also had 10cm at the top, for some skiing on soft packed pistes. More snow due at the weekend!
Switzerland Switzerland is no exception from the low temperatures, and many pistes are rock solid. Some resorts have had a dusting on the hard base, and others have had a little more. Powder lovers head to Klosters (60/105cm) or Engleberg (35/115cm). Other than that, expect hard and fast skiing on piste. There are still some thin layers on the lower slopes, but the return of snow on the weekend should pick things up again.
Italy There is a mixture of conditions going on today, but still in the common European theme of low, low temperatures. Plenty of places have had some fresh snow, but others have missed out. Skiing is either fast on packed pistes or on soft fresh snow. Check out Passo Tonale (80/100cm) where 20cm fell over the past two days for some all round good riding both on and off piste. Both Madonna di Campiglio (50/70cm) and Cortina (50/75cm) also had 10cm and 15cm of fresh snow respectively, improving conditions there. Generally the further west you go, the less fresh snow you encounter.
Andorra Andorra has some good news for the weekend as it is going to start to snow tomorrow for the next 3 days. This will be throughout the country apart from Arcalis (30/70cm) where the weather will remain bright, sunny and cold. The snow is more than needed as at Arinsal (35/55cm) conditions are being reported as hard and there is a similar situation at Pal (35/55cm), Pas de la Casa (20/40cm) and Soldeu (30/60cm). The most snow will fall at Arinsal with about 10cm forecast over five days, the rest will get a sprinkling of 5cm, lets hope more falls to give a soft topping to the hard pistes.
Norway/Sweden There is good news in Norway as snow is on the way. It has started to snow at Geilo (15/15cm), they had 3cm of fresh snow this morning and there are now sixteen lifts open instead of thirteen. This is a good indication that the season is really underway and hopefully all the lifts will be open soon as it is set to snow right through until Tuesday. The rest of Norway has hard packed runs and limited snow cover, for example at Lillehammer (15/35cm) where the snow will be more than welcome. In Sweden Sälen (30/60cm) there has been 10cm of fresh snow and there is now seventy-two lifts open giving access to powder both on and off the pistes. What a great start to the New Year’s celebrations as more heavy snow is expected over the weekend. At Åre (30/46cm) they are expecting fresh snow over the next five days which will soften up the hard packed pistes.
Germany There has been yet more snow at Spitzingsee (100/140cm), there was 15cm this morning and with a mixed bag of weather today there will be yet more snow showers. This will continue into the weekend meaning Spitzingsee is the place to be with powder everywhere. Berchtesgaden (50/165cm) still has great snow cover and with more forecast over the next few days it will be impossible not to make fresh tracks. Monday is going to be good with 20cm forecast. At Feldberg (50/90cm) all lifts are open today following the recent snowfalls and like Berchtesgaden snow will fall over the next five days with Monday seeing 20cm too.
Bulgaria Snow showers are coming to Bulgaria tomorrow which will be a welcome relief. Bansko (40/70cm) has all lifts open, the 15cm of forecast snow tomorrow will be linked with high winds so it will be advisable to wrap up warm. Snow is also forecast for Borovets (50/80cm) and most pistes are well groomed providing some good conditions to practice carving turns.
Scotland There is some good news for Scotland with snow on the way and in some areas a dusting has been reported overnight. The temperatures have fallen and at the Cairngorms (0/30cm), Glenshee (0/10cm) and The Lecht (0/30cm) and there was a couple of centimetres of snow on the upper areas last night. The Lecht now has 2 lifts open, the Robin and Wren, giving access to two beginners’ areas on man made snow. Tomorrow at The Lecht they are expecting 11cm of fresh snow. Let’s hope it is a snowy New Year.
USA Most resorts are reporting a sprinkling of snow in the last 24 hours. The main dumps of snow have occurred at The Canyons (105/115cm) where they had 18cm and Timberline (90/200cm) had 43cm. It is champagne powder all round for both resorts. If you prefer hard packed trails to practice carving turns on then head to Killington (50/75cm) and Attitash Bear Peak (50/100cm). Snow is set to continue to fall in the USA, so if you are a powder monkey, the other side of the pond is where you should head.
Canada Superb news from Canada: Whistler (77/107cm), (Fernie 110/140cm) and Sun Peaks (71/91cm) have all had around 30cm of fresh snow in the last 24hrs, so if it’s powder and fresh tracks you’re looking for then look no further! The snow continues to fall as well in all three resorts. Everywhere in Canada has had at least a dusting though, so there is guaranteed to be some great carving wherever the groomers have done their stuff.
European Weather Outlook It is forecast to brighten up tomorrow in Austria, but the snow will return on Saturday and Sunday for the New Year. The French mountains are sunny today and tomorrow, with low temperatures. All change for Saturday when lots of snow is forecast, over 20cm in some places. There will be a similar story in Switzerland and Italy, with varying amounts of snow forecast. The snow will continue to fall over the weekend, refreshing the packed runs of Norway and Sweden. At last snow is on the way at La Molina and Baqueira Beret. Unfortunately this will not be true for Sierra Nevada where it will remai |

Tuesday 3 January 2006 Introduction The fresh snow that Europe has been waiting for has finally dumped itself down on the slopes. Resorts in Austria, France, Switzerland and Italy have all had a good amount over the New Year. The snow continues to fall in Germany, there is powder everywhere. It is going to be hard and fast conditions in Sweden, and in Norway Voss now has two lifts open. In Scotland skiing is available at The Lecht and Glenshee but due to the lack of snow this is very limited. Good news in Bulgaria this week it is set to snow from tomorrow onwards. There was 20cm of fresh snow in most resorts of Andorra today, a great start to the New Year. Whistler continues to enjoy the most snow in Canada, but most other areas have also been refreshed. What more is there to say than powder in the USA? Mammoth has had 140cm in the last twenty-four hours.
Austria Great news in Austria as the whole country has had loads of new snow. Fieberbrunn (130/175cm), Obertauern (180/240cm) and Kaprun (151/313cm) have had around 50cm each over the weekend. Most skiing is either on fresh powder or on superbly groomed powder pistes. The snow is still falling in St. Anton (60/160cm) today, but it will brighten up tomorrow providing an awesome opportunity to enjoy the fresh snow. Be sure to check avalanche warnings before you go out!
France Its new snow for the new year in France, and the weather has cleared up today after several days poor visibility and snowfall to reveal some amazing skiing both on and off piste. Cauterets (40/200cm) is leading the pack in the French Pyrenees, fantastic skiing in lots of powder. The Grand Massif on the Alps side also has some amazing skiing in fresh snow and on excellent pistes in Flaine (101/200cm), Les Carroz (55/200cm) and Samoëns (110/200cm). Once again, check the avalanche warning before you go!
Switzerland Switzerland too has been reinvigorated by the recent snowfalls. The groomers have been doing their stuff, and the pistes are generally nice packed powder. Powder can also be found in the resorts of Arosa (70/120cm), Crans Montana (55/110cm) and Lenzerheide (110/155cm), each had over 10cm yesterday. Check the avalanche warning before you venture off piste!
Italy Conditions remain fairly wintry in Italy today, skies are mainly overcast, and flurries of snow are falling. Conditions have picked up though in the past few days, especially in the Dolomites. Selva Gardena (60/80cm) has had 20cm of fresh snow and Arabba (68/80cm) has had 10cm. Snow continues to fall so powder is there to be skied. The Via Lattea resorts have also had a refreshing 10cm of snow and are reporting great on piste skiing. The week looks mixed with some snow and changeable weather.
Andorra The forecast snow arrived in Andorra during the New Year’s celebrations. 20cm of snow fell at Pas de La Casa (60/80cm) on the 30th December, giving a lovely new powder surface for the early birds on the 1st. Soldeu (60/70cm), Arcalis (30/90cm), Arinsal (50/70cm) and Pal (50/70cm) all reported 20cm of new snow this morning. This has been needed for about a week now due to conditions becoming very hard. It is snowing today over all resorts bar Arcalis and it will become a bright sunny week until the weekend when yet more snow is forecast.
Norway/Sweden There has not been any fresh snow in Norway since the beginning of the New Year. Voss (40/40cm) now has two lifts open, lets hope this is an indication of continuous improvements in the resort’s situation for the New Year. For the powder monkeys it is best to head for Geilo (20/20cm) as there are sixteen out of twenty lifts open and conditions throughout the area are being reported as powder. At both Sälen (40/50cm) and ?re (32/48cm) the conditions both on and off the piste are packed, there is only a dusting of snow forecast for the next few days, so it looks like this is set to stay.
Germany Germany continues to boast more and more snowfalls. Lenggries (90/170cm) had 40cm of new snow this morning, and with most lifts open there is plenty of fresh powder throughout the area to be enjoyed. Reit im Winkl (120/235cm) also had 40cm, and the snow pack just keeps on growing, it is going to continue to snow throughout today and on into tomorrow.
Bulgaria More snow is needed in Bulgaria as the slopes are suffering under the milder temperatures. Luckily snow is forecast throughout the week and hopefully this will come to something. The best conditions can be found at Bansko (30/60cm) where the Alberto Tomba piste is being well maintained down to Kolarski pat.
Scotland There is now skiing at the The Lecht (0/30cm) and Glenshee (0/10cm). The skiing is limited though due to the lack of snow and they both only have one 1 lift open. At both resorts the snow cover is very thin and conditions are wet and patchy. The Cairngorms (0/30cm) were hoping to open the Ptarmigan tow this morning but due to a massive thaw overnight this is no longer possible.
USA It doesn’t take a genius to realise that yet again the major snowfalls have occurred in the USA. Heavenly (200/255cm) has had 30cm overnight while at Mammoth (300/360cm) there has been 140cm and it just keeps dumping down. Other resorts are reporting huge amounts of snow in the last twenty four hours and these include Park City (165/210cm) 25cm, Snowbird (230/263cm) 38cm and Big Sky (120/180cm) 23cm. The USA could not have asked for a better start to the New Year with powder everywhere and yet more on the way.
Canada Some great conditions can be found across Canada at the moment. Whistler (135/155cm) is definitely the powder paradise it is famous for at the moment, with loads of fresh snow already, and more falling today. Fernie (130/160cm) is also full of variety at the moment with some awesome skiing both on and off piste. Most resorts are reporting pretty good conditions, and with an unsettled week of weather, the snow will constantly be refreshed.
European Weather Outlook The snow will continue in Austria, but will gradually peter out by the weekend and be replaced by sunshine. The opposite is the case in France, after a couple of days of sunshine, the snow will return, getting heavier by the weekend. In Italy, the resorts on the French side, such as Courmayeur and La Thuile will get more snow as the week progresses. The further east, the more chance of sun at the weekend. More snow will fall throughout the week in Switzerland, with the exception of Arosa and Davos, and other resorts in eastern Switzerland, where clear skies will dominate. Norway and Sweden will have a predominantly sunny week with the odd cloudy spell. Spain has beautiful sunny skies forecast for this week without a cloud in sight. Unfortunately the temperatures have risen again in Scotland and it will be a dry sunny week. It will continue to snow in Germany through until Thursday when it will brighten up. It is going to be a sunny week in Andorra, perfect weather to enjoy the fresh snow of this morning.
North American Weather Outlook A changeable week is forecast in Canada, but the snow will dominate. Whistler is predicted to get loads. It will continue to snow throughout the USA today and on into tomorrow. This will then clear up for a sunny end to the week.

Thursday 5 January 2006 Introduction Austria continues to have excellent conditions with more snow falling throughout the country. Wagrain has had 30cm in the last 24 hours. In France the Southern Alps have had a dramatic change of fortune following 30cm of new snow and the major resorts are skiing well thanks to snow received this week. There is some great skiing in Switzerland at the moment thanks to recent snowfalls too. Yet more snow has fallen in Germany, there is powder everywhere. It continues to be hard and fast conditions in Sweden, and Voss, Norway, now has two lifts open. In Scotland skiing is available at The Lecht and Glenshee but due to the lack of snow this is very limited. It is has started to snow in Bulgaria and with 10cm overnight things are definitely on the up. The snow has kept well in Andorra and with more snow over the weekend it looks like it is going to be a good week. Canada continues to have good skiing but it is best to stay at altitude to get the best snow. Yet again it has continued to snow in the USA, this weekend is going to be bright and sunny providing perfect weather to enjoy all the powder.
Austria It has been a sunny few days in Austria, perfect weather to enjoy the massive amounts of snow that fell over last weekend. Many resorts have had light sprinklings of snow overnight namely St Johann (110/150cm) had 10cm last night. A couple of resorts have had notable amounts of snow, St Wolfgang (100/250cm) had 25cm while Wagrain (80/170cm) had 30cm in the last twenty four hours. Most resorts are still reporting powder conditions, the Austrian season just continues to improve and it is going to be a great weekend ahead with the sun shining across the country.
France After some heavy snowfalls over the New Year period, the skiing across France is much improved. Many resorts had over 30cm of fresh snow, covering up the rocks that were apparent in several resorts. Resorts in the Southern Alps including Alpe D'Huez (104/150cm) and Valloire (30/100cm) had some superb snow and the great conditions continue with lots of off-piste options still available. Tignes (83/110cm) and Val D'Isere (80/87cm) had some much needed snow and now conditions are very good both on and off-piste with a little untracked powder still to be found. The high resort of Val Thorens (90/95cm) has some superb skiing, with the cold temperatures keeping the snow in great condition. The rest of the Three Valleys is also now skiing well with excellent groomed pistes and some powder still to be discovered. Flaine (98/195cm), Morzine (60/150cm) and Avoriaz (130/150cm) are all skiing really well at the moment and have been enjoying sunshine after good snowfalls at the start of the week. Most French resorts are not as busy as they were, so there could not be a better time to go skiing than now. Clouds are moving in to many resorts at present with a dusting of snow possible. Isola 2000 (30/60cm) is the one place that could do with some more snow, and Bareges/ La Mongie (140/160cm) had snow on Wednesday/ Thursday morning, meaning super on and off-piste leading into the weekend.
Switzerland The snowfall from earlier this week has really boosted the conditions in the Swiss resorts providing some great skiing this coming weekend. The cold temperatures will help to maintain the conditions and the mostly clear skies over the resorts will be a pleasant change to the cloudy skies earlier this week.
Italy It has continued to be overcast in Italy but the snow forecast has not come. The temperatures have remained cold, -18¢ªC at Alagna (25/25cm) which has helped to keep the snow conditions. Most resorts are reporting hard conditions so for those who wish to cruise the slopes Italy is the place to be. Good skiing can be found at Passo Tonale (100/120cm) where the conditions off piste are reported as tracked but the odd pocket of fresh powder can still be found.
Andorra Clouds will start to form later today indicating that the snow forecast for the latter part of the week is about to fall. At Arinsal (50/70cm) they are reporting powder conditions on the pistes with the off-piste becoming tracked. This is a similar situation for the other resorts Pas de La Casa (60/80cm) has good snow cover throughout the resort but more snow is definitely needed.
Norway/Sweden Norway continues to have packed conditions in all resorts due to a lack of recent snowfalls. The snow has been protected due to the cold temperatures Lillehammer (25/40cm) has had temperatures around -10¢ªC and it will continue to be around this over the next few days. Conditions have not changed much in Sweden either. At Salen (50/53cm) the bright sunny weather means it is perfect conditions to hit the trails for big carving turns.
Germany There has been yet more snow in Germany over the last couple of days. Berchtesgaden (90/245cm) had 15cm overnight and continues to report powder conditions over the whole area. Garmisch (55/235cm) had another good dump in the last twenty four hours as they had 30cm. The snow has now subsided and the weekend is going to be sunny, the perfect ski weather to enjoy the fresh powder which is everywhere.
Bulgaria At last it has started to snow again and bringing with it a change in fortune for the Bulgarian resorts. Bansko (30/50cm) and Pamporovo (30/50cm) both had 10cm overnight and with more falling today and on into tomorrow. A great start to a sunny weekend ahead.
Scotland Scotland continues to only have skiing at The Lecht (0/25cm) and Glenshee (0/10cm). However this is very limited with only one run open to beginners at each. The conditions are very hard and icy in places. There is good news as snow is forecast for the weekend ahead, let¡¯s hope this is in significant amounts as a lot is needed for a larger area to be open.
USA What can I say? Yet more powder in the USA! Snow has fallen this week across the USA, refreshing trails and topping up the champagne powder. Crested Butte (135/165cm) has powder everywhere which was topped up last night with 23cm of fresh snow. At Heavenly (300/330cm) the snow just keeps on falling with yet another 20cm in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the last day was seen at Jackson Hole (215/228cm) where they had 30cm. There is also good news at Sugarbush (10/70cm) as they had their first snow for 2006, 5cm in the last day.
Canada Canada has continued to improve throughout the week with a sprinkling of snow in most resorts during the last twenty four hours. The most snow has fallen at Big White (129/156cm) had 8cm. Kicking Horse (84/104cm) has most lifts open and the best skiing can be found on the upper runs. This is all good news but more snow is needed, the weekend has snow forecast for most areas.
European Weather Outlook The snow of today will continue into tomorrow throughout Austria before becoming bright and sunny for the weekend. It is going to be a sunny weekend for most of Italy, in a few resorts there will be clouds on Saturday and Sunday but unfortunately these are not forecast to being snow. The weather in Switzerland and France is predicted to be fairly stable over the weekend and into next week with clear skies interspersed with some cloud. In Norway and Sweden the sunny weather will continue over the weekend with only the odd cloud dotting the sky. La Molina will have a snowy weekend whereas the other Spanish resorts are expecting a dusting of snow tomorrow and then the skies will brighten up again. At last, it is forecast to snow in Scotland over the weekend. Germany is looking forward to a sunny weekend, perfect weather in which to enjoy the powder. The clouds are forming in Andorra and it is forecast to snow right through the weekend.
North American Weather Outlook Good news at last in Canada with lots of snow forecast over t |

Monday 9 January 2006 Introduction Austria has pretty much the best European conditions as a whole with some great snowfall already this season, and clear skies this week providing some fantastic skiing. It will continue to be a sunny week across France with packed conditions in most areas. Hard and fast is the order of the day in the Swiss resorts. Germany is skiing well thanks snow conditions being well maintained over the weekend. It continues to be hard and fast conditions in Sweden and Norway. In Scotland skiing is available at The Lecht on the Nursery slopes. There is good news for Bulgaria with 30cm of fresh snow over the weekend and more on the way this week. Conditions continue to hold in Andorra and they have had a dusting of snow throughout the country. At last a snowy week for the Canadian resorts accompanied by colder weather. More snow in many of the American resorts over the weekend means that the fantastic conditions have got even better. America is the definite hotspot at the moment.
Austria Austria has had a pretty calm weekend with low temperatures keeping the snow cover in good condition. Wagrain (10/170cm) is the only resort to be getting any snow at the minute with snow still falling today. This trend looks set for this week with dry skies predicted throughout the Austrian resorts.
France There has been a snow drought in France this weekend. The temperatures have remained around -10¢ªC which has helped snow conditions to remain good in most resorts. Sainte Foy (65/120cm) is an exception to this having had 5cm, a light dusting to refresh the pistes. In other areas the best snow can be found at the top on north facing runs. Les Arcs (75/95cm) has good snow throughout the area and with lovely clear sunny skies overhead it will be wonderful day to cruise the blues. At Les Gets (40/140cm) the temperature is very mild and it is advisable to go to the upper areas where there are some well groomed pistes.
Switzerland Sunny skies with warmer temperatures are set to dominate Switzerland this week. At Davos (53/91cm) they opened one more lift this weekend, this means that most of the area is now open. Lots of snow can be found at Lenzerheide (110/155cm) with plenty of good snow at altitude. Conditions at most resorts are hard and fast with the best snow found on the upper slopes.
Italy There was not any fresh snow in Italy over the weekend and the outlook for this week is more beautiful sunny weather. At Alagna (25/25cm) conditions are hard and icy on the lower slopes with the upper slopes remaining hard but softening in the sun during the day. Good conditions can be found at Selva Gardena (70/85cm) where they are reporting excellent piste conditions especially on the upper slopes.
Andorra The clouds in the latter part of last week came up with the goods as it snowed across Andorra on the 7th January. It was only a dusting but this has great improved the on piste conditions. Today in Pal (50/70cm) it will be a great day to practice carving turns as it is a mere -4¢ªC, keeping the pistes firm but there is no chance of freezing on the lifts.
Norway/Sweden The conditions throughout Norway are of packed snow and slightly limited skiing as they could really do with more snow. This said the six resorts that we report on are all open for skiing and Lillehammer (25/40cm) has had a little new snow already today. It remains hard and fast in Sweden this week with a dusting of snow tomorrow to refresh the pistes.
Germany The great conditions have held over the weekend in Germany. The lower slopes are now packed down but great for those carving turns. Feldberg (50/100cm) has perfect conditions for improving technique with wonderfully groomed runs and fourteen lifts open. Conditions at Lenggries (80/130cm) are very much the same with clear skies overhead.
Bulgaria Following a snowy weekend it will be lovely sunny day today and then the snow will start to fall again. Bansko (90/110cm) had 40cm of snow over the weekend and with all lifts open there is more than enough powder for everyone. Pamporovo (50/70cm) is the resort to go for if you prefer good on piste conditions with well groomed slopes throughout.
Scotland The only skiing in Scotland today is at The Lecht (0/30cm) on the nursery slopes. There is no skiing at Cairngorm or The Nevis Range as the lifts are closed today due to high winds. Glencoe is experiencing some rain today but this should fall as snow on the upper areas.
USA America is the place to go for the ultimate snow at the moment. It is like someone cannot find the off switch for Mother Nature¡¯s awesome snow machine. It just keeps dumping! Aspen (112/160cm) has 23cm of new snow, Jackson Hole (35/215cm) has 28cm, Park City (184/235cm) has 20cm, Snowbird (255/280cm) has 20cm and Steamboat (165/218cm) has 25cm. These are the resorts that received the most snow although most resorts have received some snow in the last few days. It is a great time for skiing North America.
Canada At last a week of snow for the Canadian resorts, it is set to snow right through until the weekend. There is good news as the Chilcotin TLH Heliskiing (70/98cm) area is now open and they are reporting powder conditions throughout the area. Big White (135/165cm) has had 9cm in the last twenty four hours, a great topping to the already excellent powder conditions. Unfortunately the same can not be said of all Canadian resorts, Blue Mountain (45/70cm) has heavy conditions on the lower slopes, hopefully the snow this week will improve the area.
European Weather Outlook The week ahead looks mostly dry for the European resorts. It is mostly sunny and cold skies across Austria with some cloudy spells. The weather in Switzerland, France and Italy will be sunny with clear skies. France and Switzerland will be slightly warmer with average temperatures around -10¢ªC while Italy will be around -15¢ªC. Norway and Sweden also have a dry and mostly clear skied week ahead. Scotland is also set to have a fairly dry week, although Glencoe and The Nevis Range have some rain forecast mid week. Germany is going to have a glorious sunny week, perfect weather to enjoy the beautiful conditions. It will be a sunny week in Andorra with mild temperatures.
North American Weather Outlook It will continue to snow across Canada this week and with slightly lower temperatures on the way it will hopefully allow the lower slopes to be refreshed. The good skiing weather in the USA will continue this week with changeable weather set to bring mostly clear skies interspersed with some cloud cover and snow a possibility. Thursday 12 January 2006 Introduction The conditions across Europe are pretty much unchanged from the start of the week, as the countries have mostly had clear skies and low temperatures. This has really helped in maintaining the snow cover throughout the resorts. Austria has some great skiing on pistes of packed powder snow thanks to the good amount of snow they received at the start of the season. It is going to be a sunny few days in France in which to enjoy the hard packed pistes and a similar story across Switzerland with some cloud breaking up the mostly sunny skies. The cold and clear conditions across Germany mean the great snow they received recently is skiing really well. It continues to be hard and fast conditions in Sweden and Norway, more snow is on the way which will hopefully soften the surface. In Scotland skiing is available at The Lecht on the Nursery slopes. Bulgaria also has some great skiing especially at Bansko thanks to snow over the past couple of days. Andorra has not had this fortune but the skiing is still good thanks to the low temperatures. The conditions in North America and Canada are definitely the best with snow falling throughout this week, and continuing through weekend. Throughout Canada the conditions have dramatically improved following a snowy wee, powder is now predominant and more is on the way this weekend. Snow has kept falling across the USA too with Jackson Hole having 23cm in the last day.
Austria The conditions throughout Austria are very unchanged as the skies have mostly been sunny but the low temperatures are really maintaining the snow conditions. There is some cloud about today with a mixture of cloud and sunny spells through the weekend. There is unfortunately no imminent snow forecast. They still have some of the best conditions in Europe though thanks to the great early season snow fall that they received.
France The sunny weather is going to remain in France this weekend and clouds are set to form later on Sunday with snow forecast for Monday. The conditions have remained the same as earlier in the week across the French Alps. Hard packed pistes are the order of the day with the best conditions found on the upper slopes. The soft snow on the pistes has mainly been skied off now, meaning that there are icy patches and worn areas on some of the lower slopes.
Switzerland Switzerland has a mixture of sunny skies and some cloud cover today, although there will be some great visibility and fantastic skiing allowing you to get out and really carve around the pistes. The off piste skiing is mostly tracked out and packed now making the best conditions on the runs, especially on the upper slopes.
Italy Italy is still skiing well despite the fact they could do with some new snow. The pistes are really packed and reported as hard and icy in places. The best conditions are on the upper North facing runs with lower runs being of hard packed snow and getting a little worn. The clear skies are providing some great visibility for anyone heading to the mountains. The weekend will see the temperatures remaining around -5 Celsius.
Andorra Andorra is also pretty unchanged, with lower slope depths a pretty uniform 50-60cm. There is good opportunity for fast skiing on hard packed pistes thanks to the temperature remaining below freezing. More snow would be welcome but none is really forecast over the next few days.
Norway/Sweden A dusting of snow has now fallen in Norway but more is definitely required throughout the area. Geilo (20/20cm) had 5cm in the last day and Oppdal (40/60cm) had 4cm. The good news is that in the next five days on four of them snow is going to fall so hopefully there will be a light dusting on the already very hard trails. In Sweden Are (32/51cm) and Salen (45/53cm) with 7cm and 8cm falling in the last two days respectively. Over the weekend a few more centimetres will fall but what they really need is a massive snowfall.
Germany The temperature has got a little colder across the German resorts which will help to maintain the good snow conditions. Some cloud will come over to interrupt the sunny skies. The skiing will continue to be really good with excellent conditions for carving up the pistes.
Bulgaria Bansko (90/110cm) have had some fresh snow over the past couple of days really improving the conditions. There is a good amount of fresh snow to bless anyone heading that way. Borovets (70/90cm) and Pamporovo (40/60cm) also have some great skiing on packed snow.
Scotland Skiing can still only be found at The Lecht (0/30cm) but this is limited to the nursery slopes due to a lack of snow. Conditions on the slopes are very hard and thin. The situation does not look like it will change as it is currently raining in most of Scotland and bad weather will continue on into the weekend.
USA It is powder all the way again in the USA. In the last day Jackson Hole (210/220cm) had 23cm, Snowbird (230/260cm) had 13cm and at Timberline (260/280cm) there was 15cm. At Timberline the lifts are on standby due to high winds in the blizzard conditions. For those who prefer packed conditions Breckenridge (147/180cm) had beautifully groomed runs to be enjoyed. It is going to be another fantastic weekend across the USA as there will be some sunny spells and also more snow.
Canada There has been a dramatic turn around of conditions at the Canadian resorts and it looks like things will continue to improve over the weekend. There is now powder in most of the resorts following heavy snowfall and a dropping of the temperatures in the last few days. Silver Star (130/179cm) has had 40cm of fresh powder in the last day and Red Mountain (180/230cm) had 23cm. Unfortunately Chilcotin Mountain Range (70/98cm) has had to temporarily close since its opening earlier in the week due to heavy cloud grounding the helicopters.
European Weather Outlook The weekend will continue with dry and cold conditions across the European resorts with below freezing temperatures across all of the ski areas. Austria has typical European conditions with sunny skiers interrupted now and then by some cloudy spells, with similar conditions for the German resorts. The weather in Switzerland and France will continue to have clear skies until Sunday when clouds are going to begin to accumulate. The exceptions to the dry skied conditions are in Scandinavia where it is going to snow over the weekend in both Norway and Sweden. It is also going to be a wet and windy weekend in Scotland with some new forecast for the early part of next weekend.
North American Weather Outlook Yet more snow is on the way across Canada this weekend, it is going to be a powder weekend. This weekend there will be a mixed bag of weather, sun, cloud and of course more snow. Advertise | Press Centre © 2006 Ski Club of Great Britain Ltd The White House, 57-63 Church Road, Wimbledon, London, SW19 5SB www.skiclub.co.uk skiers@skiclub.co.uk phone: +44 (0)20 8410 2000 fax: +44 (0)20 8410 2001. Thanks to the SCGB for todays snow report. Good luck in the hunt for pow to everyone who is in the mountains this week.

Monday 30 January 2006 Introduction This week’s skiing should be very pleasant in Europe thanks to clear blue skies. There is fast skiing on well groomed pistes in Switzerland today. In Austria the piste skiing is also very good. Good news in the French Pyrenees where snow continues to fall. A welcome fall of fresh snow has improved skiing in Italy. The best skiing in Norway and Sweden can be found on the well groomed pistes. There is some great skiing in Germany thanks to the snow they received last week. Bulgaria is also skiing well on-piste thanks to the good conditions. It has snowed constantly over the weekend in Andorra and they are reporting 60cm of fresh snow in Arcalis and Pas de la Casa. There is now some skiing Scotland at the Lecht and at Cairngorm. More snowfall in the USA has kept the powder conditions. A snowy week is forecast in Canada.
Austria After a cloudy weekend the skies have now cleared in Austria and skiing is under blue skies and in warm sunshine. Not much snow fell over the weekend but there is a dusting in places. Solden (30/210cm) had the most snow this weekend with around 20cm falling last Friday. There is some good cruising on-piste where the groomers have been packing the snow with most areas still having good base depths. With the warm temperatures the pistes may become pretty soft towards the end of the day and may be a little hard first thing in the morning.
France There is some great news from the Pyrenees as French resorts have finally had some good fresh snow and it continues to snow today. Font Romeu (100/130cm), Cauterets (150/190cm) and Bareges/La Mongie (140/170cm) have all had a good amount of snow and are expecting more today. The news from southern Alpine resorts is similar. Isola 2000 (64/130cm) has had around 50cm over the weekend. Not much snow fell in northern areas and where it did the high winds blew most of it away. Val d’Isere (81/88cm) had a fresh 10cm and is reportedly in excellent condition.
Switzerland The weather is clearing in Switzerland today so skiing this week will be under nice clear blue skies. In most areas the slopes have become hard and fast over the weekend, any fresh snow having been blown off by the high winds. Watch out on exposed slopes at the moment as they could be icy and very hard. Snow depths are good though and there is some great on-piste skiing. Saas Fee (56/152cm) is probably the best place to ski in Switzerland this week after 35cm good fresh snow over the weekend. Andermatt (100/190cm) also had a good 30cm of fresh powder.
Italy What a weekend for snow in Italy. Each of our reported resorts had varying amounts of fresh snow. Perhaps the biggest news is the 100cm of snow that fell in both Madonna di Campiglio (140/160cm) and Madesimo (120/150cm) almost doubling their base and making for some great fun powder skiing. There is some more good news as the slopes of Sestriere (50/100cm), Sauze d’Oulx (50/100cm) and Bardonecchia (50/60cm), where the Olympics are taking place, have all had between 20cm and 30cm of fresh snow yesterday and it continues to fall today.
Andorra It has been an amazing turn around in conditions for Andorra. At Arcalis (90/150cm) and Pas de la Casa (110/130cm) they have had 60cm of fresh snow over the weekend and it is still snowing. Unfortunately at Arcalis there are only four lifts open due to the heavy snow and wind. Pal (80/100cm) has also had fresh powder with 30cm of fresh snow. Heavy snow will continue to fall throughout today and tomorrow and on Wednesday the sun will start to shine again, bringing perfect weather to enjoy the powder conditions.
Norway/Sweden The snow pack in Sweden remains hard and fast. The warmer temperatures have lowered the depths slightly in Åre (33/50cm) and Sälen (53/72cm). There has not been any fresh snow in Norway over the weekend. It is cloudy and snowy today in Hemsedal (90/90cm) which will refresh the pistes. Conditions are predominantly packed on-piste and varied off-piste.
Germany The skiing in Germany is really good with some great snow depth especially on the upper slopes. If you are after some excellent piste skiing for really good carving and cruising then Germany has a lot to offer. The temperatures will be hanging around -5°C over the next few days which will help to maintain the excellent piste conditions.
Bulgaria The snow cover at the Bulgarian resorts is well maintained thanks to low temperatures. The beautiful sunny weather is providing great visibility for skiers and boarders to carve up the pistes. This fine weather should continue through most of this week.
Scotland The Scottish ski scene has thankfully picked up a little thanks to the recent weather and concerted snow making efforts. This has allowed The Lecht to open two beginners’ runs on man made snow and Cairngorm to open the Ciste Fairway for limited skiing today. More snow would really help the Scottish resorts as the snow has not been too kind yet this season. This snow does not look as though it is going to come over the next few days.
USA There is more good news from across the pond as another storm has brought lots of fresh snow for powder riding. Jackson Hole (237/252cm) continues to be a great destination for off-piste lovers with 55cm of new snow over the past 48hrs. Aspen (125/200cm), Beaver Creek (150/213cm), Park City (200/230cm) and Solitude (270/300cm) have all received around 30cm of snow themselves. The good news extends east as well with resorts in Maine and Vermont also having a refreshment of their pistes. The snow fall is forecast to continue for most of the week.
Canada There has been a fresh load of snow this weekend for several lucky resorts. Whistler (201/261cm) just seems to be getting the best conditions this winter with another 38cm of snow falling in the last 48hrs. Fernie (295/305cm) is also a great destination for skiers and boarders with 23cm of snow over the past two days and more falling today. Kicking Horse (104/134cm) and Kimberly (80/120cm) are greatly improved with around 20cm of fresh snow each and powder conditions today. Blue Mountain (55/75cm) has had a tough time this weekend with mild temperatures bringing rain fall today and pretty wet conditions.
European Weather Outlook The skies have cleared in Europe. In Austria sunny skies and temperatures hovering around freezing are forecast this week. This week is predicted to be clear and cold providing some great skiing thanks to the recent snowfalls. Sunny skies and cold temperatures are the order of the day in Bulgaria. Some clouds will move over the resorts through the week although this is not predicted to bring more snow just yet. The cloud is clearing today and the French Alps are forecast sun and mild temperatures all week. The Pyrenees can expect snow for the next two days. The cloud that brought the great new snow in Italy will clear today and tomorrow leaving clear blue skies and sunshine to enjoy the new powder. Sunny skies and cool temperatures are forecast in Switzerland. There is a chance of snow tomorrow in Norway and then it will become sunny again for the rest of the week. The forecast for Sweden is really good with snow forecast for tomorrow in Åre and then sunny for the rest of the week. At Sälen it is set to snow right through the week. The Scottish weather is predicted to be a mixture of sunny and cloudy spells with temperatures hanging around freezing. In Andorra snow will continue to fall until the end of Tuesday, it will then be sunny for the rest of the week.
North American Weather Outlook It’s a crazy forecast for Whistler with heavy snow due to fall all week. All ot |

Thursday 2 February 2006 Introduction The sun shines strong over Europe this week. A bit of a mixture of conditions across the Swiss resorts with hard and packed slopes in the colder resorts and some spring like conditions in the resorts affected by milder temperatures. In Austria the piste skiing is very good with a mixture of hard and soft pistes. Sunshine and mild temperatures is melting the snow in France. Good skiing in the sunshine across Italy. Åre, Sweden, received a dusting of fresh snow yesterday to help their conditions a little. Conditions have remained excellent in Germany and more snow is forecast from Sunday onwards. Bulgaria is skiing well on-piste under blue skies. Andorra continues to have excellent conditions following the snow that fell last weekend. There is now some skiing in Scotland at the Lecht, Glenshee and at Cairngorm. Yet more snow has fallen in the USA which has kept the excellent powder conditions. The powder skiing continues in Canada too.
Austria There are sunny skies and warm sunshine across the Austrian resorts. This means spring conditions in January! Most skiing is reserved to the pistes at the moment with the exception of north facing and shaded off-piste slopes. Warm sunshine through the day does soften up the snow making it slightly slushy by the end of the day. This in turn freezes overnight and can be a little hard and icy in the morning. The snow is still pretty good though and most resorts have a good base depth. Obertauern (200/260) has the greatest snow depths. Other good snow can be found at Kaprun (86/269cm) and in the Arlberg region at St Anton (75/170cm), Lech (125/150cm) and Zürs (125/150cm).
France The sun is shining and temperatures are high in the French Alps. The snow in the Three Valleys is deteriorating rapidly, especially in Meribel (45/75cm). Slopes in most ski areas are hard in the morning having frozen overnight but soften up a lot by the afternoon. Good snow can still found at the Portes du Soleil and Le Grand Massif resorts in the Alps. In the Pyrenees temperatures have remained slightly cooler and there is some great snow in Bareges/La Mongie (140/170cm) and in Font Romeu (100/120cm) thanks to the snow that fell earlier this week. Cooler temperatures in the southern Alpine regions have kept the snow good and there is some good piste cruising in Risoul (100/120cm) and Les Deux Alpes (50/150cm).
Switzerland The conditions across Switzerland are pretty unchanged with the snow cover remaining mostly packed and hard and some warm sunshine bringing spring like conditions. The average temperatures at Zermatt(19/167cm), Villars (25/110cm), Saas Fee (51/147cm), Pontresina (50/70cm), Les Mosses (80/100cm), Les Diablerets (45/156cm), Lenzerheide (110/140cm), Wengen (35/45cm), Lenk (40/73cm), Grimentz (50/70cm), Flims (80/150cm) and Davos 49/114cm) are all above freezing, and this combined with the clear sunny skies is providing spring like snow conditions. The snow conditions at the other resorts are pretty packed with some hard and icy patches on the exposed slopes battered by winds after the recent snowfalls. This should hopefully improve with some snow predicted across all of the Swiss resorts as next week starts.
Italy The sunshine has arrived in Italy and brought mild temperatures with it. The Milky Way and Olympic resorts are bathed in warm sunshine today and the snow will soften up considerably. Temperatures are cooler further east and there is some good skiing around. Madonna di Campiglio (80/120cm) and Cortina (50/105cm) are both reporting excellent piste conditions from our reps. Italy is pretty similar to the rest of Europe though as the strong sun will soften the pistes so the best snow can be found on north facing and shaded slopes.
Andorra The sun has arrived bringing with it perfect visibility to enjoy the excellent conditions. At Arinsal (80/100cm) there are twenty nine lifts open out of a possible thirty and excellent conditions on the piste while off-piste still remains varied. This is the same for Soldeu (80/120cm) and they have all of their lifts open. The excellent conditions should hold over the weekend with temperatures remaining around -4°C and the glorious sunny weather will continue.
Norway/Sweden The snow cover in Norway is still packed and fast although the temperatures are remaining quite stable around freezing point helping to preserve the snow conditions. More snow would be really welcome to add some fresh snow cover on and off-piste. Sweden is in a similar situation although Åre received 2cm of fresh snow yesterday to add a little soft snow cover.
Germany The conditions in Germany continue to provide great on-piste conditions with excellent upper depths. At Reit im Winkl (85/200cm) there is excellent skiing on piste but conditions off-piste remain varied. The same is true for Oberstdorf (40/170cm) where all the lifts are open and the sun is shining overhead. There is more good news for Germany as it is forecast to start snowing on Sunday and this will continue in to the early part of next week.
Bulgaria The temperatures have remained low and the sun is shining in Bulgaria. Visibility is good and ripe for some good cruising on the well groomed pistes. The sun is forecast to continue into the weekend with fresh snow predicted to arrive on Sunday.
Scotland There are now three resorts open in Scotland but they only have limited skiing on offer. At the Cairngorms (10/30cm) they have limited snow sports available on the Ciste Fairway. The Claybokie run at Glenshee (0/10cm) has a limited cover of manmade snow. The Lecht (10/15cm) has two complete beginner runs open which have a good cover of manmade snow.
USA Snow has fallen across the USA in the last couple of days. Most resorts have seen a dusting of 10cm of fresh snow. There are a few resorts which have had notable falls of fresh snow in the last day. Alta (333/333cm) had 18cm of fresh snow overnight and more is forecast today but they are warning that it will be very windy on the ridges. At Snowbird (285/305cm) there was 28cm of snow overnight. They have blizzard conditions today but they are reporting powder conditions throughout so it is necessary to wrap up warm. The conditions in the eastern resorts are still on the up, Smugglers Notch (60/100cm) had 10cm overnight while Stowe (70/95cm) had 5cm and they have more snow forecast for the weekend.
Canada The snow continues to fall over Canada. Resorts on the western side of Canada have been benefiting the most. Kicking Horse (131/161cm) is living up to its reputation of being a powder paradise having had 35cm of fresh snow in the last 48hrs and Kimberly (112/142cm) has had nearly half a metre. The Banff Ski Areas are also looking good for some powder skiing with around 25cm falling in the past two days. The Quebec resorts haven’t been missed out this time either. Both Tremblant (87/87cm) and Mont Saint Anne (70/100cm) enjoying a snowy refreshment of their slopes. Blue Mountain (45/65cm) is suffering with mild temperatures and things may get worse with rain forecast tomorrow.
European Weather Outlook Warm sunshine is predicted in Austria this weekend, with a chance of snow returning on Sunday. More sun in Bulgaria until Sunday when fresh snow will hopefully arrive and replenish the slopes. Sun is forecast for most of the weekend in France with patches of cloud a possibility. Temperatures are predicted to drop a little so the conditions may get a little harder. There is a chance of snow for some northern Alpine resorts next week. The sun will dominate the skies tomorrow and Saturday in Italy, but cloud is forecast to build up with the chance of snow early next week. The most snow is predicted to fall in the Dolomites and in eastern resorts. Clear and sunny skies across all of Switzerland today, but cloud co |

Monday 6 February 2006 Introduction Good news in Europe as fresh snow is on its way. In Switzerland snow has already started to fall in eastern regions. Snow has started to fall in Austria with plenty more on its way. Temperatures have dropped in France and skiing is on hard pistes. It is windy and snowy in the Italian Dolomites. More snow today and yesterday in the Norwegian resorts has really improved the conditions and with more snow predicted this week the conditions are looking much better. The Swedish resorts have had a boost with both Åre and Sälen receiving new snow this weekend and more falling today. The good conditions in Germany have been further improved with new snow falling over the weekend. The skiing in Bulgaria is pretty good today with a packed base being topped up with fresh snow. The packed snow cover in Andorra is providing great skiing under beautiful sunny skies. The Lecht and Glenshee have limited skiing available for Scottish snowsports. There is some snow predicted this week in Scotland, so finger’s crossed. The skies have cleared and it’s time to enjoy the recent snow in the USA. Plenty of good skiing both on and off-piste across the Canadian resorts.
Austria The snow has returned to Austria. Many resorts have had a dusting of snow already and some have had a little more. The Arlberg resorts of St Anton (70/170cm), Lech (105/155cm) and Zürs (105/155cm) have already had 10cm of fresh snow so conditions are getting better all the time with more snow falling today. Obertauern (200/260cm), Mayrhofen (35/135cm) and Hintertux (50/190cm) have also had 10cm of fresh snow. In all areas there may still be some patchy areas and hard snow underneath the fresh dusting of snow, so take care. This should no longer be a problem after today and tomorrow as up to 20cm of new snow is forecast.
France The skies continue to remain clear and the sun continues to shine over France. The much needed snow is yet to arrive. Temperatures are cooler than they were last week and the snow that was softened by the sun has now turned pretty hard. The best snow will definitely be found on north facing runs. Skiing will be pretty fast everywhere so sharpen those edges before you go. The best piste conditions can be found in the Southern Alps where the temperatures have remained low throughout. Risoul (100/120cm) and Isola 2000 (60/130cm) have some great skiing on well groomed pistes. Unfortunately the snow isn’t very forthcoming either. There is a chance of a dusting later in the week in the Northern Alps and in the Pyrenees but other than that it’s mostly sunny with low temperatures.
Switzerland Conditions are mixed in Switzerland this week. In the west, around the Lake Geneva region, conditions are very similar to France with sunny skies, hard pistes and a need for fresh snow. In the east and towards Austria the cloud is building and fresh snow is on its way or already there. Arosa (50/100cm), Davos (87/123cm) and Klosters (60/110cm) have already had 15cm of new snow. This is forecast to be a trend and most areas should get a welcome refreshment of snow which should get heavier later in the week.
Italy There is a mixture of conditions in Italy today from sunshine in the west to high winds and snow in the east. The Olympic resorts have some good piste skiing today under sunny skies, but Sestriere (50/100cm) and Cesana (50/100cm) are now closed in preparation for the big event – the Olympics! Skiing is still available in Claviere (50/100cm) and Sauze d’Oulx (50/100cm) in the Milky Way. Further east there is more cloud and more chance of snow. The high winds in the Dolomites could prove problematic to skiers today.
Andorra The sunny conditions across the Andorran resorts look as though they are here to stay for this week. Clear skies, with some light cloud, will be providing fantastic visibility for those skiing in the Andorran resorts. Excellent snow cover, particularly on the upper slopes, is allowing skiers to really enjoy the on-piste conditions.
Norway/Sweden The snow conditions across the Norwegian resorts are much improved thanks to snow fall today and over the weekend. Geilo (60/60cm) received 3cm of snow yesterday while the other resorts are reporting new snow fall today. Hemsedal (90/90cm) has 4cm of new snow, Lillehammer (80/100cm) has 30cm of fresh, Oppdal (20/40cm) has 30cm, Trysil (55/70cm) has 5cm, and Voss (40/50cm) has 10cm. It’s set to be a great week with more snow forecast, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. Swedish skiing is also on the up with new snow at Åre (33/57cm) and Sälen (50/60cm) over the weekend and more predicted this week.
Germany The German resorts are generally looking better this week with new snow falling over the weekend at Berchtesgaden (55/185cm), Garmisch (30/180cm), Lenggries (80/140cm), Oberstdorf (40/160cm), Reit im Winkl (85/200cm) and Spitzingsee (70/140cm). Feldberg (75/150cm) may not have the fresh snow but there is good snow depth throughout the resort providing some great skiing on pistes of packed snow.
Bulgaria The conditions in the Bulgarian resorts are improving thanks to new snow fall. There has already been a light dusting across the resorts this morning and this should continue through today and into Tuesday. Friday should also see more snow falling in time for a great weekend.
Scotland The skiing in the Scottish resorts is no better this week. The Lecht (10/15cm) has only one beginner run open made from artificial snow, and Glenshee (10/10cm) has some skiing available on Claybokie. Aviemore (2/10cm) has insufficient snow cover for lift served skiing as they only have patchy cover suitable for standing classes. The Nevis Range has very limited snow cover so snowsports are not possible, although lessons are available on the artificial slope. Glencoe does not have enough snow for skiing yet but the rain today is expecting to bring good amount of snow to the upper mountain areas.
USA The Rockies continue to enjoy some of the best conditions in years as the sun shows its face over Utah and Colorado. This coupled with the fresh powder that has fallen for the past week means some fantastic skiing in powder and on groomed powder pistes. Resorts worth noting are Vail (167/167cm) and Jackson Hole (267/270cm) where powder conditions dominate after around 30cm each in 48hrs. In the Californian resorts of Heavenly (228/347cm), Mammoth (365/426cm) and Squaw Valley (145/430cm) temperatures have risen slightly making conditions a little spring like: Icy in the morning and soft later on. In the east there have been dustings of fresh snow but today the winds have picked up, so wrap up warm if you are heading to Vermont or Maine.
Canada With the exception of Tremblant (87/87cm), everywhere in Canada had some new snow over the weekend. Perhaps the best news is the 35cm of fresh snow that fell at Blue Mountain (60/80cm) in Ontario. Conditions haven’t been great here of late and this snow comes as welcome refreshment to the slopes. Kicking Horse (141/171cm) continues to be a powder paradise with around 90cm of new snow in the past week and Whistler (278/338cm) has reportedly had the most snow since records began over 20 years ago! Snow continues to fall today in light flurries in all areas except Big White (240/274cm) where the sun has broken through for a chance to enjoy all that powder.
European Weather Outlook The forecast for Austria is cloudy skies and snow all week with heavy snow predicted for tomorrow. Cold temperatures and cloudy skies have brought snow to Bulgaria. This good fortune should deliver snow today and tomorrow, and hopefully |
