I'm just looking for some opinions on this board as a first board. I'm a relative beginner really (a couple of week holidays), but really want to get my own board at some point. Trouble is, I don't really know too much about most of the boards around.

So basically, what do you all think of it? Are the changes to the new years one for the better? I've read it's more of a park board whereas I suppose I'm more interested in getting more of a reasonable all mountain board if there is such a thing...

Cheers Hutchy. I should've done a proper search first in hindsight. Wasn't sure whether there'd have been any discussion on the 2011 board though.

2011 has rocker doesn't it? Might push it away from beginners over the cambered version. Difficulty comes with finding somewhere to test it and see how it stands up against the excellent original.

Yeah I had been thinking that may be a big difference as to suitability. To be honest, I've pretty much stuck to on piste boarding thus far with just a tiny bit of messing around in powder on the side or between pistes. I want something that'd be fine for this but also something that would be relatively OK for progressing in powder if there is such a thing. Anyone with ideas?

The Hatchet would be fine for what you're wanting to do. If anything a rockered board would be easier and quicker to learn on.

Not something I'd go out and buy without testing first. Get yourself to a dome and try one of the demo boards that has rocker. I'm not 100% on the type of rocker the new Hatchet has though! If you can find that out and find something similar then at least it gives you a chance to see how you get on. I think the only downside to the Hatchet after trying a few other boards is its quite heavy in comparison - but still the features for the price point are second to none. Cambered version wasn't terrible in powder but my legs were having words afterwards

Atomic Hatchet is a good progressive, all mountain board that leans slightly towards freestyle. To be honest, you will struggle to get a board as decent for £250 than this, and it will be interesting to see how well the rocker tech benefits it - probably make it better for progression as less 'catchy' when learning tricks. A fail safe board for anyone wanting good quality, on a budget.

Yeah the cost of the Hatchet seems excellent on comparison to other boards on the market. I'm not limited to that budget, though I don't want to get too carried away into buying something totally unsuitable for more money and not getting the most out of it.

Are there any potential future problems for a relative beginner by progressing on a rocker instead of a standard board?

Not at all. the basic concept of 'rocker',although there are many varients depending on whether you ride pow or park etc, is that the boards tail and tip lift off the snow as you move further away from your bindings with the centre of your board (between your bindings) generally sitting flat on the snow. This has a number of effects;
1. The board is already in the shape that it requires to make in order to turn - hence it is generally easier, requires less effort to turn. This is a plus for begginners.
2. As the tail and tip edges sit prowd of the snow it makes the slight wobbles that begginers have less likely to catch and so less time spent on your face/ass!
3. When progressing onto tricks it makes it less likely to catch edges on the take off to kickers and also when itting boxes/rails etc.

The only disadvantage is that if you learn on a rocker, you might find riding a cambered board a bit wierd! Some might suggest that you will nto learn as wellbut that's frankly boll*cks! You won't have spent as much time on your arse/face and you might not have had to work so hard to innitiate turns but to me that equals more fun! Incidentally, I learnt on a camber board, still ride a camber board, but will begetting a rocker for next season. Boards are like soldiers arsenals - use the weapon to do the job you want!

I agree. I learned on a regular board and now ride a rocker/camber Never Summer. Wish I had learned on a board with rocker. I think in a few years some kind of rocker between the bindings will be standard for beginner or learn to ride boards. It's harder to catch an edge and easier to turn. You can probably pick up a used banana-- they have been around for a while.

Lets bump this thread.

Has anyone got a chance to ride this new board? Or even compare it to older, camber Hatchets?
I'm really keen to buy this, but not sure whether to pay extra 100€ for new rockered version.

Best deals I've found this far for new boards:
11 model: 280€
10 model: 220€
08 model: 180€

Whaddaya think?

I've got last years model, the white one with the grim reaper.

Bought in March last year for £140 which I thought was a bargain.

Rode the board for the 1st time yesterday at Milton Keynes and just smiled for the two hours I was on it. I love it! The Mrs has moved even further down the pecking order in the things I love order!

I can only compare it to a Burton Clash I rented last year at Les Arc as well as a Rosignol Accelerator when I learned at MK.

The Hatchet was great, fast and faily easy to keep control of. I'm still learning, but I did not end up on my ass once yesterday. Have got Burton Missions on the board and again, no complaints. The Clash does not come any where close to the Hatchet. Looking forward to taking it to Serre Chevalier on Sunday for a week.

Love this years Hatchets graphics compared to the version I have, hey ho...
