#1  Tamworth Snowdome vs Castleford Xscape  Posted 26/07/2010 @ 15:53
Hey people, just wondering what everyone thinks of the park night at these 2 indoor slopes?

I've been to a park night at Xscape and really enjoyed it (Even if the run up to some of the jumps is a little short) but i've never been to one at tamworth.

The main reason I ask is that I just got discount vouchers at Tamworth for £17/3 hours recreational boarding whereas Xscape is about £30 compared.

How does Tamworth compare to Xscape? and is the lift system still a little....well, crappy?

Cheers!

Crappy ??????.............Crappy you say ????

Swings and roundabouts mate, swings and roundabouts !

At Casleford, you have to use the poma which can take a while to get to the top and you're supposed to unstrap one foot every time out of your binding, now THATS crappy but at least you get a nice ride to the top without your arms aching.

At Tam however, no need to unstrap, you just glide up to the rope tow, grab on and go. Within a minute your back at the top of the first landing (lip, take off point, whatever) ready for more action.

If youre all about kickers then Tam probably wont be for you - Cas beats it hands down (and so does Hemel and MK)

If you like boxes rails, giant gas pipes, 1/4 pipe however then Tam will probably float yer boat. Best way is to come and try it and see what you think. I dont think you'll be disapointed.

You don't have to take your foot out of your binding at Cas, it's the only Xscape where the lift is robust enough for them to allow it.

Yeah laps are quicker at Tam but you can forget it with regard to kickers, who wants a flat landing? I also think they cater more for people at an intermediate level at Cas. Oh and the snow is better

Tam is worth a visit, but I wouldn't ride tehre every week.

As just said the snow is better my Mrs uses more talcum than the snow in Tam, more fun in Tam sometimes though!

It must be a local thing then eh Charlie

When I was up there I got severely b*llocked for having my both feet in. Not only that, when I did try and glide to the poma, in most cases someone was always in my way. At Tam they're a bit more easy going and let you grab the rope from any point as long as you dont put people in danger.

Thanks for the responce guys, I think i'll be sticking with Cas but i'll give Tam a try. It's all about the kickers i'm afraid

As for the Pom Lift at Cas, the last time I went there were lots of people strapped in, the lifty (Can I call them that at an indoor slope?) must have been in a bad mood :p

It won't have anything to do with the robustness of the lift, think about that for a second!

It's purely because one foot strapped in is the accepted way for Snowboarders to ride the lift. It also allows them to clear the lift quickly if they fall off, and makes it easier for beginners to get on and off. There is also the fact that I suppose you could get fall and have something like a T-Bar get stuck between your legs, dragging you up the hill, which can't happen on skis or when on a snowboard you've only got one foot in.

It's more a healthy and safety regulation than anything no doubt.
When I worked in Whistler on the drag lifts, we had to make sure everyone had one foot unstrapped when they got on, but there was no real issue with strapping one in as you went up, provided you could get off quickly.

What was an issue, and isn't really possible in UK Snowdomes is where people strap both feet in, then try and get as far out wide from the lift as possible. That can actually derail the lift. You had to give people a pretty serious warning for that, which if then ignored would be grounds for having the Ski Patrol pull your pass.

Back on topic.
One key difference between Xscape and Tamworth, is that the later has a short break during the freestyle session to regroom the slope. I think it's a really good idea personally, aside from giving a quick time out and getting everyone in the bar, it means the snow stays in good shape. Nights at Xscape always end up with the snow really trashed.
