Alright chaps!
im new to the forum on this is my first post, back off to tignes in less than 3 weeks now (braap braap, whaat whaat) going with my girlfriend and also with my dad and step mum,
thinking of buying my dad a head cam for christmas....so i can use it and get some good pov shots just wondering where to look?!
every search ive done brings up packages with a camera + dvr (the hard disk it records to) included, but my dad already has a 40gb HD video camera, basically im after a head cam which can plug in to his existing camera!
any help would be greatly appreciated, and the footage willl be posted when i get back off hols, i want to get backside 3s down this year |

You'l need to check that his Cameras has an AV in socked if you want to connect an external head cam lens. Most cameras dont though which is a pain, most only have AV out not In. its the same socket used for in and out and most just say AV on the camera so you will need to look in the cameras manual or online to check if that model will record stuff in as well as playing it out. If you dont have AV in then its not possible to connect one im afraid. |

I bought my missus a 'Flip' camera the other day, they are super quick to set up and easy to use. Not quite the same but might be a good alternative and get more use when you are back from hols.
Cheers. |

I have a camera which plugs into my camcorder, but you have to have an AV INPUT port on your camcorder, and most these days don't have them
here is a list of compatible camera's

I have got one camera for general shots and an old one specifically for my head cam- bit of a pain but it works! |

This one doesn't plug into a video camera but thought I'd put a link up anyway as the video quality from what I have seen is awesome. Bit pricey but then it is in HD.

A bit off topic but it may be usefull......I found that if you put the cam on your helmet (please insert your own joke about helmets here ) you get some really shakey shots and far too many quick pan shots.
I found it much better to fasten the cam to a bit of Velcro on my chest that points in the direction you are riding, so you don't get so much wizzy whirly kind of shots that give you a headache. You can also then take the cam off the Velcro and point it wherever you want.
I found this works best for me so just a thought. |

I don't think any recent (i.e. HD ones like you have) camcorders have the required inputs for attaching a bullet camera.
If you are willing to spend the money I think the best option currently is the Contour HD 1080p followed by the VIO POV. Both are standalone units - having spent a small fortune myself going down the camcorder and bullet cam route a few years ago, I wouldn't recommend it. Too many cables, battery packs switches etc. After a few days you get fed up of the hassle and stop taking it out whereas something like the Contour HD 1080 will fit in a pocket ready to clip on when you find that awesome powder line |

thanks for all the replies!!
trying to keep costs down more than anything so the contour is out of the window, sexy piece of kit though!
a bullet cam would be ideal, the camera which i would be using as the dvr is a 'flip camera' very small 12mp full 1080p, very nice camera but all its used for is filming each other, wheras if they could have a bullet cam my dad would be more likely to try a Martin Bell re enactment and film his run at top speed
i understand the draw backs that were mentioned such as shakey movement etc, the flip camera they have is a snowsport friendly model, not in that its water proof or anything but it has stability control and all that jazz but as with anything like this i think experiementing until it suits the user is best, as strapping it to my chest would effectively jsut be looking at the side as im a boarder
thanks very much for the fast replies though folks! just managed to nip home and now off to manchester to do another job, oh the joys! |

those little cameras don't have an AV in port so its impossible to attach an external head cam to it. |

me and a mate got the POV 1.5 camera at the end of last year, also bought 8gb cards and found that the battery and charge would last the entire day, the hard drive went into a backpack easily and the bullet camera fitted to the goggle strap easily, got some decent footage but 6 hrs a day recording does take a lot of editing. |

thanks very much for all the replies they have been very usefull, im at my dads tomorrow so i will check out his camera then, but from the sounds of things it wont have an AV in, and if that is the case ill probably buy him a gps logger, so he isnt always nicking mine
ill let you know how i get on though!, as i still really fancy a bullet cam |

Have you considered some Gaffa tape and an underwater/drop on the floor camera?! We decided to use our waterproof camera on our last holiday - gaffa taped it to different parts of our bodies then set to record and boarded away. Was great - good enough for holiday clips etc, maybe not Spielburg quality but fun to watch when we got home! also means you have a camera to use on your summer hols, underwater action!!!
Although if your into lots of sports like moutain biking etc you may want something more like the others suggested - I have been tempted but decided for the amount of use it would get its not worth the cost (lets face it home movies have about a 20 minute appeal - MAX!) |

I've been messing around with POV cameras for boarding for the past 5 years. Got two of them from Dogcam. A bullet cam attached to a Sony Handycam and then a POV 1 which was a hard drive device. The latter was better than the former as it had only one wire and a slightly better picture quality. Now my Sony HDR and Canon Ixus shoot in HD I have sold these POV devices. The comments on sweeping footage is true as it is strapped to your head and you can't help moving it when boarding. Am contemplating the Contour HD 1080. Tested the raw footage downloaded off the website with Final Cut Express output to DVD and it looks as good as my handheld HD devices on my big TV.. No wires as well so the best thing on the market as far as I can see. The new Contour is about 130 quid cheaper than the POV was and is 10 x better by the look of it. |
