Hey.
Looking for some advice about becoming a snowboard Instructor.
Just back from Alpe D'huaz last week, and was like my life is boring..lol work, work, and more work.
Always wanted to be a snowboard instructor, and have been boarding for about 10 yrs.
Im 37,and have no ties here,so thinking of selling up,and just going for it,so im looking for advice on where to go,and what qualification would be best for Europe?
any Advice at all would be appreciated.
Cheers

I did an instructor course a few seasons back and it was wicked. I highly recommend it! I liked it so much I've now ended up working for the company that I did it through, which obviously make me bias! But I wrote an article for Whitelines at the time (back when I wasn't so bias!). You can check that out here (just scroll down to the "Whitelines Zero to Hero" article). It sounds like you're in a similar position to where I was then.
Most of our courses run in Canada and provide CASI qualifications - which are very highly regarded around the world and would work well for Europe... apart from France... you've got to jump through a lot of tricky hoops to get instructing there! |

I would say CASI is better... but I'm bias
BASI is really good as well and can be done without you even leaving the UK. |

Having heard feedback from people that have done both CASI and BASI courses they say the standard of riding required is considerably higher on BASI. Having also seen first hand the riding abilities of people qualified from both organisations, it seems to concur.
It all depends on where you want to teach though. CASI obviously if you want to teach in Canada, but BASI is highly regarded throughout the world. Teaching in France unless you're French is a whole new ball game. |

What's the next step after BASI 2? Is there another level? |

BASI Level 3 ISIA
Muchos hard work with numerous modules required - mountain safety, common theory. You also require a second discipline be it skiing, adaptive or telemark. |

Ahh cool, thanks Fatbob.
So it'd be fair to say that you can't compare CASI like for like with BASI because CASI's Level 4 is the ISIA level. Thirds and quarters so to speak.
I'd say it's generally regarded that a CASI 2 is a higher level than a BASI 1 working on the premise that with a CASI 2 you can teach pretty much anywhere (apart from France) and a BASI 1 allows you to teach in an enclosed area only (or words to that efffect). Take from that what you will @ the OP. |

My personal opinion is that the CASI 1(3 day course) is more easily obtainable than BASI 1 (5 day course), however BASI 1 is not that far off CASI 2 (or wasn't in the old ASBI format of Snowsports Scotland). BASI 2 is a very intense 10 day course. |

Remember often what you enjoy as a hobby can become a big chore and unenjoyable once you have to depend on it for a living.
However, I doubt it would be like this to move into a career in snowboarding and would love to have the opportunity myself. But as with any other career there will be times when you are not going to be happy and as long as you're prepared for it and can deal with it, you'll be fine |
