I live 10 minutes from the tunnel and pretty much always drive down. Most of my time is spent at Val Thorens.

- I generally catch the 6:30 train from Folkestone and get to VT around 3pm French time, just enough time to get quick slide :-)

- Even though ferries are cheaper, I would go Tunnel everytime, much easier and quicker - closer to the M20!

- One handy tip is to use your Tesco clubcard points for the crossing, will cost about £25 on vouchers which is nothing if there's a few of you.

- Don't forget to get European Brakedown cover, roughly £35 for my 307.

- Depending on where you go and what time of year make sure you got some snow chains, although these are sold in service stations the closer you get to the mountains.

- Stick to the toll roads

- Petrol on my 307 Diesel about £150 ish

Overall given the cost of food in resorts these days a week of eating out can be expensive, if you've got your car can fill it up with food and drink - normally I wouldn't be so tight but spent a week in La Tania last year at a Chatel and couldn't even find any juice like Robinsons - drove me nuts.

One other good website I book a lot from is www.ownersdirect.com and www.holiday-rentals.co.uk if you are in a position to do a last minute trip you can find an apartment that's not rented and haggle for a good deal. Got a slope side place in VT in April for £125 last year :-)

we did 4 trips to france in 2009, 1 car, 2 train and 1 package deal with flights

the drive worked out the most expensive trip, the pound had just bombed and the cost of ferrys, tolls and petrol (strapping board bags to the roof took 30% off the mpg, plus the cost of fuel in euros) added up to a lot between three of us

plus the epic drive was a pain in the ass, i'm sure some people swear by it but id rather chill out on the train or break up the journey with airports, maybe if you could save a crap load of money by driving but you can train or fly for £100-150

as it goes the cheapest trip was a last minute all in deal to some posh chalet in val d, this season i'll mostly fly, maybe train if there's still a direct train from paddington to beourg
