Hi Guys,
Just a wee question regarding boarding in Japan, does anybody have a reasonable guesstimate of when the season runs from??
Cheers,

Most places in Hokkaido properly open from early December. When the snow gets good depends on the year etirely, right now it's looking like a late winter, but you never know. A couple of years ago we got some great powder from mid-december but then 4 years ago it was icy as. A safe bet would be about a week or so into January.
Depending on what you want to do and what level you are there are places that get snow earlier. We have one or two resorts that open early, get a lot of powder but are 1 lift, 1 run, and pretty dull to base a holiday around. |

Cheers for the feedback, I am actually heading out to Korea and was just thinking about a sneeky weekend to Japan. More than anything for a tick in the box of places been and things done.
Thanks anyway.

If you just want to tick the "I've snowboarded in Japan" box - it is possible to ride there as early as October (or is it November?) I think.
However- this is on one artifically made strip of snow - and would not be worth the journey from Korea. I would hold off until later in the season if you can, to experience the true delights of powder that is snowboarding in Japan |

Where are your riding Rubberbuggy?
I was gut deep the first week in December last winter and it was a shit and late start to the season.
It's already snowed on Asahidake (2,200m).
Getting much cooler in the Niseko area.
I've spoken with the mountain and weather gods and I will be skiing Mt Yotei in October (1800m) and skiing Grand Hirafu from mid-November through 'til May 2008 |

November 11th, Onze, on a landing strip of fake snow, then usually hit Kokusai early season, cos that and Nakayama Toge normally get loads more snow than anywhere else, but Toge is tiny. Usually ride at Teine and Rusutsu, with a couple of Hirafu weekends thrown in. Kamui's not bad for some early season high jinks too.
How's Yotei looking at the mo? Asahi Dake has already got a wee dusting.
Last season was a rubbish start, Rusutsu was icy for ages, but they're predicting an early start to this one...bring it on. |

Hiked Yotei Wednesday morning.
Ground frost at 1500m. Frozen inside the crater.
Planning on some Halloween turns under a full to waning moon. |

First snow on Mt Yotei this morning.
Not enough to make turns, but I bloody thought about it long and hard. |

Long and hard aren't two words I'd ever associate with you, young Michael! There's nothing here apart from the seraccy glaciers; although it's the best october I've heard of in Chamonix, very little precip, sunny every day and cool temps. Ideal biking weather, have been XCing every day this week, long may it continue!
When you do finally get your ass up a mountain make sure you take lots of pictures |

Roughly, but with more and more consistent snowfall.
Niseko area lifts start in mid-Nov and stop mid-May.
Hiked Yotei this morning, more snow but still not enough. Won't be long.
Full on winter conditions though.
October 28th is my earliest start to a season (hiked Jay Peak, VT last year).
Will be very surprised if if don;t get on skis earlier than that this winter. |
