A freind of mine and I are gonna head off to scotland this winter.

Thinking of going for the trip in february sometime based on the good chance of snow.

I want to know if this is a good time to go and where would be a good place to stay. cost is a factor.

looking for suggestions......

I'm sorry but it took me quite a while to figure out what that's saying. Don't throe it all away! ;-)

Scotland... well I'm not an expert but I've driven there a few times. I'd wait and see what the snow's like, and go mid week if you can. I stayed pretty much where I could find. Fort Bill has lots of places for Nevis Range for example.

February is generally a decent month. If its anything like this Feb it'll be eppc.

But no-one up here can give you any real snow sure dates as, to be honest, we just don't have any.

Best thing to do is check on the sites (webcams at resorts and winterhighland) the weeks before you're thinking about coming and see where the snow is best.

In terms of where to stay, the Crianlarich hotel had a good deal last year which I think they are doing again this winter. £40 for a double room bed and breakfast (thats total, not each). Included in that is free transfers to and from Glencoe (about half an hour) on their minibus. They were also picking up at the station in Crianlarich if you get the train up.

We stayed there a couple of times last year on 2 day trips (even though we're only an hour away) because of the stupid price.

If you're bringing the car Nevis range in Fort William is only about an hour and ten away from the hotel, so you could do both in 2 days if the goings good.

For Glenshee have a look at places in and around Braemar or Blairgowrie. Even likes of the Bridge of Cally hotel which is about 25 to half an hour from Glenshee.

In terms of the hills, my favourites in terms of order would be :

Glenshee/Glencoe
Nevis
Cairngorm

Cairngorm gets super busy whenever theres snow, like its the only place some people know about. We had some epic (and I mean all time) days at Shee and Coe last year and hit Nevis 2 days after a massive late season dump that was so big Alt Sneachda was pretty much a 12 foot half pipe!

My tips would be:

Leave it as late as you can
be willing to change plans last minute
check the websites to see what has the best snow and more importantly weather conditions
Have fun.

All I can say is, on a good day you could be anywhere in the world up here!

i think the big one is - don't book in advance, there could easily be no snow

I've had good weekends there and the odd shocker

The Scottish season is a bit of a later starter and going over the seasons past there has generally been enough snow to get the lifts running early early February. My last day up the mountain this season past was 05/06/10!

Feb is a good month - but as others have said - there's never a snow guarantee with Scotland. I'd hold off booking until closer to the time.

There's loads of good, cheap accommodation to be had around the Glencoe / Nevis area to be had so don't worry too much about finding somewhere to stay. I have a habit of ending up in one of the hostels in Kinlochleven or alternatively you can stay in a cabin in the grounds of the hotel there - think it worked out around £12 a night each for two of us last new year's eve booked about 7 days in advance!

I'd only book well in advance if I was going to take the mountain bike up as an alternative.

I was thinking of doing Scotland next year, but as i have never done it before i didnt know where to start, i like the idea of loading up the car road trip stylie,no airport check in etc! would you get accomodation if you just rocked up somewhere or is booking a hotel in advance well worth doing? also if there was a good dump would every man & his dog head up there? meaning no rooms & packed slopes?

Every man and their dog will head to Aviemore if theres a big dump.

Go to one of the other 4 centres and you'll be gravy.

It'll still be busy, but you rarely see the level of queue at any of the other centres.

cairngorm is actually ok if the funicular is running, even with full carparks.
the majority of plebs and noobs use the train, which leaves you the fiacall and M1 pomas for top -> bottom / wedgie action.

if the funicular isnt running though, just stay away. if you're heading up the M9, turn left at dalwhinnie and go to nevis instead. it's slightly nearer.
hopefully they'll reinstate the ciste side chairlifts, and then we wont have to put up with that nonsense for much longer.
