  #1  Royalty-free ski holidays and ski resort pictures?  Posted 23/07/2010 @ 20:46
does anyone know where I might find royalty-free ski and snowboard images?

I need ski action pics, snowboard action, family skiing, luxury ski holidays, apres ski mayhem, ski resort shots and generally lots of ski holiday images...
... just finishing a massive global ski resort guide for our new ski holidays website and realise that it will cost hundreds of pounds if we have to buy pictures for it!
... not tight... just skint!

any ideas?
take the gap out of this email and it should work

cheers

You've only just realised photographers don't work for free? Sounds like a well planned business venture.

thanks MrPugster - generous of you to make the effort with ideas
RogueSkier - drop me a line with your details and I'll get in touch when we can afford to commission images (hopefully next winter)

Solution for now:
I've managed to acquire a huge global image database of all the pictures which each ski resort allows you to use, royalty-free...
... hundreds of high quality hi-res ski, snowboard and ski resort images which they've paid for over the years in their marketing budgets.

thanks both!

NickMotture - as former BBC Holiday producer I've commissioned a lot of quality content from a lot of freelancers, and plan to commission a lot more in future - what a shame your comment didn't lead to a profitable working relationship - hope I never stoop to treating complete strangers with similar disdain in public - "sounds like a well planned freelancer's business plan"

Following on from Pugster's idea.... there's quite a few images on the Fickr Commons royalty free.

Also don't most of the resorts/tourist boards have a selection of images for use on their sites?

Drop me a line if you fall short for Canada/UT/WY/MT. I'm no pro and wouldn't expect payment...... but had to be cheeky seeing as it was your first post and all!

Touchy.

In fairness, Nick (and Rogue) didn't say anything that a lot of us weren't thinking and you surely must have expected some sort of sarcastic humour in response to your request.

Good luck with the site.

Please be clear that "royalty free" does not mean zero cost. Royalty Free is a licensing model; in summary it means that you buy the image and use it as you see fit. Photographers simply don't give away what they do: that gives it a value of zero.

These guys pay for their images in helicopter and snowcat time plus food and beer. If you're in the business then you can usually find a way to trade.

It sounds like you took the other approach, which is to talk to the marketing guys at the resorts and get "B-roll" from them. Which is what I'd have suggested, but it's still not "Royalty Free" - you have some sort of "license" from the image owners (probably the resorts), and they let you use the images for free. It is not "Royalty Free". The resorts get the images from photographers who they pay, either in cash, or by employing them, or (like me) by trading accommodation, food and beer.

said what i ment in more eloquent and less "im on an iphone and trying to use as few characters as possible" kind of way. No such things as free pictures, all us photographers expect to get paid one way or another. Royalty free is another term for 'ripped off the internet'. I get paid for my pictures and graphics in stuff, boards, jackets, holidays and beer as well.

got you - yes, wrong terminology

the promo pics from the resorts come with no provisos, or just the one that you use the images for promoting the ski resort... which we'll def be doing in the ski resort guide

believe me, I'm looking forward to the day we can commission new images... there's enough hackneyed and repeated pics and features in the online ski world already... but that day is not today... if it turns out we do have a well thought out business plan, content producers will be the first to benefit

last time I had a team in Chamonix they had awesome time filming haute route with punters and ski club gb - looking forward to going back to work in the mountains

You could also try the regional or national tourists boards for images. Lots do have stock that can be used to promote the area at no cost, as long as you credit the photographer.

Can you use the Flickr commons license for commercial use ??

Yeah, it definitely depends. There are different levels of use ranging from 'you can use this image for anything' to 'you can use this image so long as you don't try and sell anything with it'.
Flaps.
