Got a video through, primarily to highlight this year's etape stage up the Tourmalet, but was an interesting watch nonetheless.

For my Pyrenees trip looking at burning between 5000 - 7000 calories a day.

Anyway, back on track and the reason why I resurrected this. I'm looking at new shoes and pedals for the roadie, having taken a long time to look at replacing the SPDs. I'm not bothered about compatibility as I'll use my old shoes and cleats on the winter roadie and MTB.

Two options really based on price and value - SPD-SL and Look Keo 2. Has anyone got any thoughts on either in terms of reliability, comfort and ease of use? The only thing I am wondering is compatibility issues between the Keos and a shoe that will fit my foot.

After a couple of hours and trying on 8 different pairs of shoes in the bike shop last weekend, my new road shoes and pedals have arrived. I went for the Keo 2 Max and Northwave Vertigo Pro. I'm just setting the cleats up on the turbo now. First to drop the saddle by 3mm over Shimano shoes / 540 pedals.

There were options on the SPD-R 105's and Mavic pedals, however I've not seen Mavic cleats anywhere in the numbers that I have SPD and Look cleats.

The Northwaves have got a nice toe box and plenty of width compared to a larger size in the Shimano shoes. Now riding in a size smaller than previously as the same size as Shimano felt baggy around the foot. The two strap "tri" shoes didn't suit my feet and the ones with the ratchets at £20 more, heavier and the difficult to find replacement parts didn't seem a logical buy. My local bike store isn't exactly local, but it's the best one I've found that actually listens and knows what it's on about without trying to push for the sale.

look at this for a road bike!

gear ratio good for 200mph.

if you need a bigger front cog, swap for the one on the wall.

New boots for the bling bling wheels for the summer.

Ultegra 6600 wheels
Ultegra 12-25 cassette
Continental tubes
Subtle and understated Vittoria Rubino Pro 700x23c 150tpi tyres

Saved about 400g on the whole package from the old RS500 wheels and 60tpi tyres.

That should halve your rolling resistance! Wonder how they would cope on the Giro!! We managed to watch some of the Live coverage on Rai3 whilst away last week. Cracking stage to Montalcino - at times it was like watching a cyclocross race!! Unsurfaced tracks akin to fireroads in most forests and slick tyres plus a smattering of rainfall = treachourous conditions on sub 23c tyres!! Check it out, I think it was Stage 7 of the Giro D'Italia. Ironically won by ex MTB legend Cadel Evans. As you watched each rider roll over the finishing line, you could tell they had been in one hell of a battle.

Today could be interesting in Le Tour after yesterdays's schenanigans. I hope Andy Schleck regains yellow and puts some time on Contador.

Think the Col du Tourmalet will be the best stage of le tour this year - tempted to book the afternoon off to watch it LIVE. Or record both Eurosport and ITV4 on sky+
