New user here (please don't stop reading yet...), but I have been reading the forums for a while and felt this is a good place to get a varied and helpful opinion!

I learnt to ride regular after doing the standard push/slide/stairs tests... I got to the stage of "progressive beginner", comfortable carving on red slopes. I then fell over whilst trying an ambitious jump (ok, it was a small ramp and I screwed up cause I was clueless), and managed to twist my ankle, destroying my ligaments and breaking a small bone. Firstly, no one i've spoke to since has hurt their ankle, they always say their knee is what would typically buckle in such a fall... Is it really that uncommon?

Anyway, the ankle repaired itself slowly during the following year, and i used a wobble board to get the strength back in the joint and revive the synapses.

A season later and I attempted to board regular and couldn't. My ankle just wasn't strong enough. I changed my stance to goofy, and after a few years riding goofy I am now a confident intermediate. Problem is, I cannot for the life of me ride switch (regular). I'm not sure if its a confidence thing or whether my left ankle simply isn't strong enough to be the leading foot.

Anyone with a weak ankle have a similar problem and/or have any ideas how I might be able to get comfortable riding regular? If only for the purposes of landing a 180 and not falling over at the first attempted carve...

Any help hugely appreciated, and apologies for the long post.

Hi and Welcome to the forum!

Firstly, how did you turn your ankle? maybe you didn't have you boots done up tight enough at the time?

I have a weak ankle on my left foot, i ride goofy.

I found that light exercise and strengthening exercises have helped it, ie learning to balance on a pilates ball and strengthen my core and ankle etc.

If you do want to use exercise to strengthen it get a personal trainer or see a physio! and DONT do anything high impact on it like run etc.

Thats as much as i can help mate! hope you can sort it out.

PS im in no way a professional GP/Physio etc. so please take my advice with a pinch of salt and how i have approached my own problem to a bad ankle.
I'd forget my balls if they weren't in a bag!

See a physio, buy a support brace, and get really supportive boots

If you don't think the ankle is strong enough or it causes you pain, then go see a sports Physio.
If you know anybody in a football, rugby or athletics club they should be able to advise you on which Physio to go to.

As for riding switch.......
Practice
Practice
Practice

May be worth getting a one to one lesson with an instructor and ask them to focus on switch.

(My right ankle has been destroyed a couple of times BTW.)
It's all going downhill.......

As previously mentioned get it sorted physio is okay if they specialise in sports and not old people in hospitals or massage therapist! I have dodgy ankle and tape it up it gives support but takes some doing, deceny ankle brace would be okay as long as you know exactly where the pain is

ruptured my right ankle lateral ligs some years ago whilst rock climbing - ankle weak until I had ligament reconstruction - hey presto, all good again! Just ride stiff boots now, and it sometimes aches a little after a long days boarding but nothing prohibitive.

dont know if this will help but i did this..

http://www.goneboarding.co.uk/Forum/Tweaked-ankle-ligaments-strapping-home-or-wait-a-day/ThreadID/33599/ShowThread.aspx

Had to cut short my day yesterday as even after a full day and a halfs rest, with my support on my ankle gave out.. Strapping supports the ankle but cuts of blood circulation eventually and you get numb feet...

I could board blues no probs but anything more than a red just tweaked them.. Im going to be mountain biking like a good un and doing balance ball work to really strengthen it.

Also im going to get new boots ( I rock ThirtyTwo Fous Boas as they are super stiff to Ride CAD bindings and a Burton Custom X) as they are 4 years old.

Im going to really do excerices and physio to get back on track and make sure i can everything in a dome before heading back out to the mountains...

Ankle injuries are fairly common I think, or at least that's the only injury I ever had and I've met a few people who also did their ankles in. I broke mine riding hard in hard boots: I destroyed the boot in the process, but I was going rather fast at the time.

Obviously everyone's injuries are different. Mine was fixed with a bit of time and physio, plus the wobble board and all that. Now I can't even remember which foot it was. If you've a weak ankle then that's going to be bad for boarding even if you're not riding switch (yes I can ride hard boots switch, before anyone asks). So I'd be wanting to get that ankle sorted out by exercise and physio, which I hope is possible although it may depend on the injury.

In my limited experience of these things "proper" sports physio is fairly specialized and you need someone who knows what they're doing.

Sports physio or sprts therapist (good one) normal physio will just plug you in and give you silly rehabi exercises which are great for grannies but hardly proactive

I've got a weak ankle caused by tearing the ligaments in my left leg playing rugby. They were then weak and I played sport again, stretched them etc and have had trouble ever since.
I was worried that this injury would affect my boarding and skiing (I do both) but have found that due to the support of the boots, I haven't had any trouble at all. Even when i fell over in the street in Zell last year and twisted my ankle.

I'm just greatful that it is my ankles that are bad and not my knees, as I think that would be game over.
