QUOTE (worldwidematt - 03/03/2010 @ 09:42) Hey Hey you guys! I'm flying out to Calgary in 10 days today and rather excited! I think this is aimed at stuart, snoangel and those whe are very well informed; What are the conditions actually like at the moment? I've got 19 days to fill before I fly out of vancouver and a 4x4 to keep me company! I have a free bed in jasper and the same in Whistler and Calgary. I'm quite prepared to drive a day or more if it means better conditions for a week... So, where do I go?! Also, as I'll be on my own, albeit equipped with pip (trannie), probe etc, how easy is it to hook up with a group to get some back-country? This'll be my first time in Canada and I know in france it's usually a matter of a few beers the night before, make friends, demo your pip ability before you set off 1st thing in the morning and voila! Does the same thing happen accross the waters? Cheers in advance if you have sdvice Mxxxxx Hey Mr Matt!
If you think you make friends easy in France then you'll be amazed in Canada buddy! It's such a rad place. If you have no specific plans and can be flexible then keep and eye on the snow report and travel where has the best snow at that time. You'll usually find the Koots gets pretty rad snow, this season has been strange to say the least!
Just make sure if a group offer to take you out into the BC they are properly equipped and seem to know their stuff!
If you make it our our way, fire me a PM I'd only be too happy to show you around WH2O such a rad hill!
Have a sweet trip man, ride safe!! |

On Monday afternoon I thought I was never going to see Rossland again Picked up a Jeep Grand Cherokee at Calgary and headed onto the Trans Canada towards LL, Just out of town it began to snow and before Canmore it was really heavy...not much traffic on road and soon it was an almost whiteout with trucks jack-knifed and cars in ditches off the road, eventually weaved through the blocked up areas and got to LL about 3 hours later than planned. Sis in law was on a bus transfer and the coach would not go any further than Banff...held there for 4 hours till trucks were cleared from the highway. In all my years driving in Europe and N.America I think that is as bad as I have seen it. |

Glad to hear everything worked out okay Stuart. Winter driving in the mountains is anything but predictable - as you have experienced it can be clear in one area and as soon as you enter a pass, wham. I have been driving all through Western Canada for more years than I care to say but it always pays to be prepared.
As you probably know, there is another front coming from the Pacific later this week. Not a lot of moisture is forecast east of the ranges but, you never know. Be safe. |

We will just be riding at LL this week as both kids are in Kindercare. Craig is 3 and enjoying his skiing lessons so maybe he will get out with me later in the week if I get my skis back on. Tuesdays pow has now been wiped clean, still fresh tracks to be had with a hike though. East to see that there has been a lack of snow at LL for a while bnut the trails are great for some fast cruising. |

Re: Being prepared for mountain driving
I'm certainly glad there is snow around, given this has been the warmest and driest winter in Canada on record. I'm out on my mountain bike these days on trails that, last year, had 2' of snow on them!
Environment Canada Story
Unlikely that you will need this stuff but this is what I carry when going on long drives in the winter.
Shovel (you have one already I gather in your pack) candle (heat and light source) blanket(s) flares sand bag(s) jumper cables tow strap food and water
Always drive with a full tank of fuel (i.e. fill up when you get to half) |

We always have the things on that list as you just never know when they will be needed. Its now snowing again in Lake Louise so hoping it freshens things up for tommorow. Has there been any fresh snow down at Rossland and Nelson way ? |

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. The group I ride with is in the midst of an email war about whether to go mountain biking or snowboarding this weekend! It's been so mild in the Valley that a lot of our favourite trails are just begging to be ridden and there's fresh powder on the hill. Plus its supposed to be bluebird tomorrow. Maybe I can ride my bike in the morning and the board in the afternoon?!? |

That's why the decision is so difficult. The non- snowboarders in the bike group want to ride in the morning because they have tee off times in the afternoon! Bloody golfers.
Yeah, its really tough living in the Okanagan, I know I have your sympathy. |
