We hope to head back out there a bit earlier in the season next winter..probably late Feb. Looking forward to it and we will bring tranceivers and the rest for our next visit. As you say everyone is so friendly and helpfull. Never stopped in Nelson but had a nice drive through and back to Rossland via Castlegar after we came of the hill at Whitewater making it a circular trip as we had arrived via Salmo. These are the type of places i love to ride and chill out at.......Kicking Horse was a top place too and would recommend it to everyone to give it a visit. |

Got this e-mail today about the purchase of Red Mountain - Just hope it does not over commercialise and spoil this great place. Cant wait till i return in February next year.
Howard Katkov Leads Purchase of Red Mountain Resort Rossland, BC., ski area to add lodging, on-mountain amenities and lifts, while
expanding skiable terrain from 1,200 acres (486 hectares) to 4,200 acres (1700 hectares)
ROSSLAND, BC. (June 2, 2004) —Red Mountain Resort announced today that the Canadian ski area known for its best-in-the-world tree skiing and plentiful powder has been sold to a private investment group led by Howard Katkov of San Diego, Calif. The sale was contingent on a recently approved official community plan that will guide future development at the resort. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The new ownership group plans to construct 1,300 dwelling units and 70,000 square feet of commercial space at Red Mountain over the next 15 years. Plans for immediate on-mountain improvements are also in the works. This summer, a “magic carpet” conveyor system will be installed that will provide beginner skiers and snowboarders with their first introduction to the sport – without the use of a chairlift. Other initial improvements include the development of a terrain park and the expansion and remodeling of Paradise Lodge.
A high priority for new Red Mountain Ventures President and CEO, Howard Katkov will be to expand the resort’s beginner and intermediate terrain and to reinvigorate the alpine base area. In addition to the magic carpet, Katkov plans to install new lifts and enhance existing trails to broaden the novice and intermediate experience at the resort within the next two years. Additionally, a new skier-services center and two to three other multi-unit lodges will be constructed in the base area. These new buildings will establish a design standard and create a focal point for future development at Red Mountain.
“Red is a magical place with an unquestionably promising future,” said Katkov. “Integral to any expansion plans is our continued, strong connection to the community of Rossland. The town is a huge part of what makes Red like no other destination in North America.”
Katkov, a longtime skier and part-time resident of Rossland, has been impressed by the Red Mountain skiing experience since he first visited the resort in 2000. He believes the resort’s abundant dry powder, diverse terrain, and close connection to the historical city of Rossland elevate Red Mountain above the competition.
“A well thought out plan coupled with ongoing communication is critical to the success of any development,” said Red Mountain Ventures Director of Planning and Development, Don Thompson. “We’re especially excited about our effort at Red because of the way we’ve been able to maintain and expand the ties to the community of Rossland.”
“The people who live and work in Rossland have greatly supported Red and this change in ownership. We’ll do our best to continue to earn their trust,” added Katkov. Katkov said he plans to reinvest earnings from Red Mountain Ventures into the various projects that will improve on-mountain facilities and guest amenities.
“We’re delighted to have Mr. Katkov join our close-knit Red and Rossland family,” said Red Mountain’s Director of Operations, Jim Greene. “He’s a highly capable, community-oriented owner who’ll make everyone in Rossland proud.”

Here is an article i recieved today about the future of Red. This place has such a good "feel" to it that i cant wait to return in Feb. A top place.
New Ownership Heats up Red
What has always been the ultimate destination for skiers and snowboarders in the know, Red resort in the classic ski town of Rossland, BC, now has a fresh new vision, a new Web site, and a host of new on-mountain amenities and services that provide everything today’s snowsports enthusiasts and their families need for a great mountain holiday.
Red President Howard Katkov says the recent changes are just the beginning of an exciting new evolution that’s quickly turning Red into one of North America’s premier four-season destinations. “Red reminds me of what skiing and ski towns used to be,” said Katkov. “We want to share and retain that classic feeling as we work to improve our visitor offerings.” Katkov added that Rossland — recognized recently as one of North America’s “10 Great Adventure Towns to Live and Play” by National Geographic Adventure magazine — is an integral component to Red’s ongoing development plans. “Rossland is a huge part of what makes Red like no other destination in North America. Visitors are drawn to this place time and again,” he stated. Rossland Mayor Les Carter commented, “Howard and his team have energized Rossland. Our City Council is impressed with the quality of vision and competence at Red, as well as with the very high degree of cooperation and good faith being shown by Red's new ownership — cooperation that extends to things that are sometimes problematic, such as cost-sharing for new utilities infrastructure.” Mayor Carter added that Red has “taken the lead in creating a fair and responsible program for financing our new reservoir and other needed water projects.”
Surrounded by wilderness and tucked comfortably in the picture-perfect Kootenay Rockies in southeastern British Columbia, Red resort currently offers 1,585 skiable acres of world-class terrain spread across two towering mountain peaks. Red has permits in place to grow to an eventual 4,200 skiable acres, which will place Red among the largest destination resorts in North America. Red’s expansion plans also include the construction of 1,400 on-mountain dwelling units and 70,000 square feet of commercial space over the next 15 years.
Along with the growth of its mountain boundaries and resort infrastructure, Red plans to improve all aspects of the customer experience at the fast-emerging though largely undiscovered British Columbia resort. Many new programs and amenities will be introduced in time for this winter’s ski, snowboard and leisure-travel season. These include:
Red Express Beginning this season, Red is making it easier than ever for travelers to get to the resort. With the introduction of the Red Express daily shuttle service from Spokane, Wash., destination skiers and snowboarders can fly into Spokane International Airport and catch the mountain-direct shuttle. The Red Express has been created as a comfortable, convenient and affordable alternative to renting a car when traveling to Red from Spokane. The shuttle is a skier-sized, 11-passenger van outfitted with DVD and loaded with refreshments.
Terrain for Beginners and Experts “Red has a long and storied reputation as one of the great expert destinations in the world,” said Katkov. “But we have been focused this year on expanding our beginner and intermediate offerings.” Red has increased its skiable terrain to 1,585 acres — up from its previous 1,200 acres — to accommodate a wide spectrum of skiing abilities. Katkov sees this as a concerted effort to broaden offerings to children and adults new to the sport.
Red’s world-class terrain also provides an endless number of intermediate and expert runs for skiers to discover with each descent. First-time visitors to the resort can take advantage of a free, guided tour provided by knowledgeable Red Snow Hosts.
Red Snowsports School Because of the demand for programs that serve families with young skiers and snowboarders, the Red Snowsports School is introducing Club Red for the 2004-2005 season. Club Red is less like lessons and more like fun. “Grouping youth by age — Kinders (3-6 years), Club Red Juniors (7-12) and Club Red Freeriders (13-18) — is just one secret to providing enjoyment for the whole family,” Katkov noted. He said the Red Snowsports School also has new programs for adults from beginner to expert.
More New Stuff at Red In addition to Red’s new services, the resort’s staff has been working to put a number of new on-mountain amenities in place. The new Red terrain park provides skiers and riders with enough rails, fun boxes and tabletop jumps to thrill skiers and riders of all abilities. The 6-acre park is 1,739 (530 meters) feet long and was designed by Jeff Patterson, one of North America’s most experienced terrain park designers.
The new 225-foot (68.58 meters) “Red Carpet” conveyor-type lift gives beginner skiers and snowboarders a chairlift-free introduction to the sport. Novices can now get up the hill by just stepping on a rolling carpet, similar to the ones at many airports.
Red’s new Welcome Centre has been added as a one-stop shop for information and services. From the moment guests arrive in the Red parking lot, helpful greeters are there to welcome guests, give assistance and even share directions to their favorite “secret” run.
A cross-country and snowshoe loop was constructed that links Red’s base area to the existing Centennial Trail, a groomed trail that winds its way approximately five kilometers (three miles) to the neighboring town of Rossland. A number of smaller, offshoot trails will also be created, providing a variety of paths that will be ideal for exploration by snowshoe.
In conjunction with its new name, Red resort has launched a new Web site, which can be found at www.redresort.com. The site contains up-to-date information about new developments at Red, all resort programming and area accommodations. More information on Red is also available at 1-800-663-0105.

Red Alert! Red Joins North America’s Elite, Named No. 13 Resort
in Skiing Magazine’s ‘Annual Top 25 Guide’
Rossland, BC, recognized as top adventure town by National Geographic Adventure magazine
ROSSLAND, BC. (October 25, 2004) — Red Resort has been recognized by Skiing magazine for its world-class tree skiing, deep, plentiful powder and enhanced beginner amenities. The publication ranked Red the No. 13 resort in North America in its annual “Top 25 Resort Guide.”
The prestigious ranking comes just weeks after Rossland, a largely undiscovered ski town five miles from Red’s base, was included on National Geographic Adventure magazine’s list of the “10 Great Adventure Towns to Live and Play” in North America.
“We’ve known for years that this is one of the world’s best places for outdoor recreationalists and vacationing families,” said Red President Howard Katkov. “The rest of the world is now starting to discover this incredible place.”
The Skiing “Annual Top 25 Resort Guide” ranked Red higher than several larger, better-known North American destination resorts, including Sun Valley, Idaho; Steamboat, Colo.; Heavenly Valley, Calif.; and Breckenridge, Colo. The magazine graded Red highly for its popular glades, as well as Red’s enhanced beginner terrain and ongoing base-area improvements.
Katkov, who purchased Red this past summer, added that Red is fast becoming a top destination for avid skiers and snowboarders as well as for families seeking “a wonderful winter experience with a unique connection to the town of Rossland.”
Red is instituting a comprehensive 15-year development plan that will add 1,400 on-mountain dwelling units and 70,000 square feet of commercial space in Red’s village. Along with the growth of its mountain boundaries and resort infrastructure, Katkov is upgrading the overall customer experience at Red with the addition of several new amenities and instructional programs, many coming online this season.
These include daily shuttle-bus service to Red from Spokane International Airport (The Red Express), a “Red Carpet” conveyor-type lift for beginner skiers and riders, and the creation of the Club Red Snowsports School for families. This year Red also added a new Welcome Centre offering one-stop shopping for information and services, and a cross-country and snowshoe loop linking Red’s base area to the existing 5-kilo., groomed Centennial Trail that winds into Rossland.
Red, established in 1947, and the ski town of Rossland are surrounded by wilderness and tucked comfortably in the picture-perfect Kootenay Rockies in southeastern British Columbia. While currently offering 1,585 skiable acres of world-class terrain, Red has permits in place to grow to an eventual 4,200 skiable acres — placing Red among the largest destination resorts in North America.

You don't feel that the changes will ruin the resort in the long run?? Tough one, I would love more acreage and vertical but commercialising every decent resort will kill the appeal for me. Already we have seen smaller resorts are closing such as Fortress, Marshall Mtn, Montana and Antellope Butte, Wyoming. Like Scottish football, the rich get richer and the poor go bust. |

They do seem to have quite ambitious plans and yes it does concern me that the place might change for the worst. Last season i was shown the areas that will be developed and i was in two minds whether it was for the best as i felt a lot of the terrain was accessible if you wanted to hike to it and it is so beautiful and unspoilt that to put in lifts would be a bad thing....but im not sure. The plans for the base area are good with a lot of high quality accomodation going up. Its a place i would like to invest in but it might just be too expensive fo me just now. Although we have looked at quite a bit of property around Nelson and there are lots of bargains to be found. There is decent value property in Rossland,Trail and nearby Montrose which could make good investments with all the proposed work at Red. To answer the question, well i still dont know if the development is good or bad. I love this area and intend to go back again and again. http://www.redresort.com/ |

Its probably irrelevant but it worried me that the plans for the base area at Big Mountain would spoil the place but a mixture of two things happened. They demolished the old day lodge at the bottom and built a lovely new timber building which fits in well and offers a lot of shops that complement the area.
The biggest thing though was the 'Stube or the Bierstube to give it its full title had been threatened with moving and was closed for a year. It does not really fit in as its an old 'rickity' wooden bar in the centre of the mountain village. However it opened again last winter and looks safe under new owners. Had that went it would have spelt the end of the old BM to me.
The worrying thing for me is that resorts only really make serious money from the sale of homes at the base. Not a good thing in my opinion. |

Big Dumps on their way!!!! Got this weather warning on the Nelson weather page!!! Whitewater base up to 160cm! Well that's what it was at yesterday, with a big dump expected last night!
Heavy Snowfall Warning for West Kootenay
Radar observations suggest 5 to 15 cm of snow has already fallen in the Okanagan region overnight and an observer noted 9 cm snow in Vernon and 3 cm in Kelowna at 3 AM with slushy difficult driving conditions. About 10 to 15 cm has fallen in higher elevations of the Columbias and kootenays thus far. Heavy snow continuing to develop further across these areas has the potential to give another 5 to 20 cm snow or more this morning.
This is a warning that heavy snow is imminent or occurring in these Regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.
A strong flow of tropical air aloft over riding a thin layer of Arctic air is giving snow heavy at times across southern British Columbia interior early this morning. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected today in these regions. Higher snow amounts near 50 cm are possible in the north and west Columbia. Snow is expected to spread to the Prince George region later today giving 10 to 20 cm snow.
Heavy snow is expected to change to rain heavy at times in the southern sections as milder air begins to surface. About 20 to 30 mm of rain is forecast for the West Kootenay, arrow slocan and East Kootenay regions for today and tonight. Snow warnings will be ended as the rain change-over begins later this morning.
First in the Okanagan and Shuswap regions...Heavy snow will change to occasional rain and end very early this morning as strong southwesterly winds aloft finally generate subsidence drying.
A low pressure center associated with this tropical winter wonder will move into central British Columbia in the afternoon. Then temperatures will plummet later today as a vigorous cold front from the northwest sweeps the remnants of this pineapple express towards the Rockies and into Alberta. Expect gusty winds and another 10 to 40 cm of snow over the favoured areas tonight and early Saturday. The snow will end as a ridge of high pressure builds across the province Saturday afternoon.
Be prepared for winter driving conditions with areas of heavy snow poor visibilities and rapidly changing conditions.

Picture from the Molsen Canadian Free Skiing Championships last week on Mount Roberts. This is an area which might have lifts installed on it in the future.I think that would be deteremental to Red and if people want to play here they should use their own energy to get there. |
