Revision #1 (Last edited: 04/03/2010 @ 22:15)
Hi all,

New to the forum, but have been an avid (inactive) fan for a long time, so I thought it was about time I got involved.

I know there have been many threads already about board bags, baggage allowances etc, but I was wondering whether anyone has had any very recent experience with Crystal and their pathetic policy of 6kg for your board bag and it not able to contain anything other than your board...all for an additional 30 quid? Do they not know how to pack a board properly?

A group of us are wondering whether to pay the 30 quid and then risk it by packing it as we normally would and not worry about having our clobber in a separate bag.

Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Morzine anyone???? http://sanssabots.co.uk/

I went in January as part of a group with Thomson / Crstalski. They told me I had to pay £30 online and could only have my board and bindings in there. But when we were flying, the captain announced that 40 pairs of skis (i'm assuming they meant 40 ski / board cases) had been left in England.

On the way back I sacked the restrictions off and put more stuff in my board case so that my main case was lighter. Nobody said anything.

Last year I put 2 boards in one bag and they didnt check. This year I made the mistake of asking if I was allowed to. They said £30 each board.

If you're part of a big group you might get away with it if other people in the group are well under the limit. If it's 2-3 of you, then you might get charged.

I went Glasgow-Chambery Jan 30th, Chambery-Glasgow Feb 6th. Had board/boots/bindings/bits&bobs, about 12kg, paid my £30. Others in my group had well-stuffed bags.
No hassle on the way out.
On the return flight, the check-in were imposing a weight limit of 23kg on board bags, causing a lot of punter frustration as they repacked. My guess is that this was a rule of the French baggage-handlers union rather than Crystal/Thomson.
In the past I've travelled with two boards and never been questioned. So my suggestion would be pay the £30, don't worry about the 6kg but don't go nuts either...

We travelled with Crystal / Thomson Fly to Sauze (Turin) in Jan & we had no trouble with board bag weights. There is a 23Kg top limit to any bag - not sure whos rules but its stated somewhere I read, might be a European baggage handler thing like Exo said.

Think my boardbag was something like 13Kg and no one was bothered by it. So, load it up a bit with clothes, safety gear, etc but just don't take the P basically

We booked a Crystal holiday through Interactive Resorts. Before we went I got them to call Crystal and confirm in writing what the Boardbag weight limitation/allowance was.

They wrote back and said "There are no weight restrictions on Skis/Snowboard being carried".

As it was, I packed two boards and one pair of Skis in one boardbag and packed around them with clothes for protection.

No one said a word at the check in either going out or coming back.

I think Crystal may be just scaremongering people into it to make a few extra quid.

Had the same worries before we left this year. It's worth checking with the carrier as we went with crystal/Austrian airways and they allow a free carriage off on board per person. We had already booked with crystal so had arguements ready if they queried the weight (as we only paid for 1 carriage and had 2 boards boots etc total 19kg). Flew from east mids and paniced as they asked to check the bag but only opened it half way and noting on the way back. Feel for you man it was a nightmare with just 6 of us!!

I've always gone with Crystal and usually put my board, bindings, boots and helmet in my snowboard bag which comes to more than the allowance but they've never said anything at check in at either end.

We went away to France with Crystal in Jan. Both of us packed our board bags full - board, bindings, boots and all ski gear around 26 kilos.

Nobody said anything
