Im going to be honest im pretty much the biggest wimp when it comes to trying anything new . Normally i board with my mates but im wanting to go more and they want to go less, so when im on my own i find it really hard to push myself to try new things, is there any techniques people use to push themselves to try new boxes/rails and jumps?

I like to imagine that the low box is a giant cock and if I fall it's going straight up my arse.

Just to hightlight my point: I view this as a less than favourable situation.

Ok.......

--------------------------

I try find out when an instructor is going to be riding and then try and copy what they do. Ask him/her to show you something really basic and then build yourself up from there.

Try not to worry about falling over and if you fall, just get up and try again.... and again... and again!

I don't believe you.

Don't think about what you're about to do too much. I mean over thinking usually means you won't go through with it. So I am always more of the thinking 'don't think, just do' I mean snowboarding is meant to be fun, not stressful!

I also always find I ride much better when I am listening to some rad tunes. I only ride with one earphone though so I can still hear what is going on around me, but it is amazing what some sweet ole HipHop (my favored genre) does for my confidence & overall attitude to my riding.

Have fun bud

Phallice aside, I find my riding is much more relaxed and on productive when i'm comfortable in the environment i'm riding in. For me this means riding with friends or at least other people even if you don't know them well. Get on a freestyle lesson or get a group trip organised on here if you can't get mates to come riding with you (something I struggle with as all my friends are skiers). I find with other people, you give less of a sh!t about falling as you have someone to laugh about it with, plus other people's riding motivates me to do more.

Find a jump thats easy but bigger than your comfortable with and do it. The go bigger and bigger. Don't try any tricks on something your not comfortable with, just go over it, then go for something bigger. Then go back to the old one, it should seem easier.

The key to boarding is being stupidly confident but aware of your own limits. Also dont be afraid of getting hurt. The last time I was boarding at tam I was trying 180s on the transition of the battleship. I fell off the first 4 times, but I landed okay and didnt hurt myself. Tried a 3 onto the the drop tank and bailed horribly, leaving blood smears on the snow. (Help for heroes gig, I think I wasnt the only one bleeding that night) But ya know, after 10 minutes I felt fine again and the next day I felt happy that I tried the trick. Next time I'l have it down, I know it.

I agree with teadrinker, don't be afraid to try stuff, but ride within your limits.

Your own personal attitude is going to make a big difference. If you want to push yourself to get better, you will get better. It might be basic, but here's a few points to consider:

- don't be put off. If you're trying a new box and it isn't working, just keep trying, keep practicing. If you're having a rough time of it, remind yourself that you want to progress, and sticking at it is important.

- when you see the good shredders, they always look really comfortable doing every trick. That's because they are comfortable, they've done it loads of times. The tricks that you can do, keep working at those ones too. Get them dialed in, make them really comfortable for you, second nature. Mix it in with trying new tricks, but make your other stuff solid.

- certainly don't be put off by the other snowboarders. I find it really hard trying new stuff sometimes if there are a lot of riders around who are clearly better. But in reality, the vast majority of snowboarders are having fun in the same way that you are. They're all progressing at their own rate, and their probably nice people. In fact, if you asked them for some advice they'd probably be happy to give it

Book an intro to freestyle lesson,
The instructor should will introduce you to progression to spin's, box's and rail's
Learn how to do it properly...
Rails are the easiest but have the worst possible outcome
Box's are tough to begin with, keep a flat base, as soon as you learn that progression is easier
Spins have a hard technique to perfect but can be easily acheived with trial and error

The progression grading is there... start small and work your way up

Er mate, rails are not the easiest...

Lets get this straight. On a box, as long as you go in flat based and reasonably straight you can just go straight over. On a rail, especially round ones, you have very little surface area to be balancing on, and really need to be committed and confident. Even a square rail will offer problems because its smaller, and as a result the camber of a board can effect the way you go over it, as can body position, speed, everything. First box I tried I had my eyes tight shut and rolled over it. First rail I tried I had my eyes open, 100 percent concentration and and bailed on me testes.

I agree with the spins however. You really need to work with every combination of how to do it until you find whats perfect for you. Some good tips for anything more than a 180 is to lead with the head and shoulders, carve into it so your doing more of a 290 rather than a 360 and spot your landing.

Agreed, can't stress enough how important it is to be dandruff-free before attempting this

i agree with the lesson thing, start freestyle lesson. they do them at chill factor ( (manchester) your from cheshire right, not too far) on a thursday night and theres loads of people there learning to jump and press boxes. if you cant go with your friends go and be with fellow snowboards, youll share a common interest and blast your pals on the next trip

good luck
