  #1  Planning on doing a season...  Posted 03/07/2010 @ 19:15
Hey there,

I'm planning on doing my first season for 2011/2012 ( i know thinking ahead! but it's the winter after i leave university! ) and basically i'm just having a look around for what kinda stuff i would and could do. I'm a BASI level 1 at the moment so it looks as though teaching is off unless i do my level 2 (well thats what i hear, i heard america you don't need anything to teach but the damn visa's) but really i'm looking for something that would give me maximum time boarding (i suppose everyone is looking to do that...) would you suggest i do my level 2 first?

I've thought about resorts too and i'm looking mainly in a canadian direction, but if i hear of anything else that would be better then i'm all ears. Also how much am i looking for cost wise? i know theres plenty of companies (natives and so on) but i'd rather hear from people as i can imagine there being a lot of hidden stuff that they may forget (and maybe some cheaper ways of getting stuff like accomodation and passes )

Ultimately being there and not working, just boarding, sounds like the perfect thing for me but i know it'll take a lot of money which unfortunately i don't/won't have.

Thanks

TL;DR BASI level one planning on doing first season, what should i do? where should i go? how much money would i need?

Thanks

hey,

teaching in Canada you'll be lucky to get a job on BASI 1, hard enough getting a job with CASI level 2 in the current climate.

as for money you will want 700 for your flight that's a return,

about 500 -1000 pounds to get through to your first paycheck if your doing resort work a lot depends on conditions and opening dates etc, i had a season where resort opened 3 weeks late and would have been in trouble had in not had the money there.

depending where you are if you go to Canada your talking about 500 600 a month if your sharing in any nice accommodation. or if you get staff accommodation which could be awful or pretty good ( depends where you go) you need about 300-450 per month.

obviously you want work that provides your pass for you or you,ll have to shell out for that separately and dependent on resort that wont be cheap in Canada.

You'll still need a visa for Canada.

Best bet is to go on Natives, loads of people on there who have done seasons in America/Canada that'll be able to give you first hand experience, fair few threads on there about cost of accomodation etc.

Hey,

I agree with the guys below you will struggle to find instructor work with just a basi 1..

I would not recommend doing a season without working! resorts are funny places its quite difficult to make friends if you dont have a job.. If your looking at Canada (I only really know whistler well) the job I would recommend is bell boy you make good money and there's lots of evening work so plenty of time on the hill and all the hotels here give a free life pass!

We have a guide to whistler on our website with more details about passes and costs have a look
