Sorry - probably should have been more clear... but very few airlines seem to do this now. BA was a bit confusing but it appeared I could have a normal bag, OR a boardbag, and if both I had to pay £35 for an extra piece of luggage. But I may have got this wrong, like I said it wasn't super clear!

I apparently would also have had to pay extra for two bags on one of the coaches we took (forget if it was Airport - Torino, or Oulx - Briancon), although I don't think they would have enforced it (would have been an extra €6 IIRC).

Easyjet were charging £6 each way for a normal bag, £18.50 each way for a boardbag, so you're only saving £6 with it all in a boardbag. Ryanair wanted to charge £40 each way for a boardbag so we didn't bother with them at all!

Edit - also the OP appears to live in the Channel Islands (am guessing since he has to use flybe, but maybe another small island) so that'll be a limiting factor. Although I've not so far had any need to take my snowboard to Jersey!

Yeah, I know nothing about flying from the Islands, but I would have thought there would be some airline who has it on their list (or partners list).

United dont fly from Scotland, so we always have to get a flight to Heathrow first with BMI. But as BMI are a star alliance partner of United and teh flights are booked with United (who are then putting us on a BMI plane) it's the United luggage allowance that takes precedent. Handy given BMI are extortionate for luggage.

I'd have thought, given Heathrow is the hub airport, you would have been able to find someone who flys from there (albeit using another carrier for teh first leg of the trip).

A quick check on the United website and Jersey does appear to be a selectable airport. No flights on teh days I tried, but it is at least selectable.

When do you fly maxi?

If you're with BA we might end up on the same plane from Heathrow!

We've also been worried about the strikes, just got to hope now that the ground crew dont decide to walk out during easter. Could really be doing with all our gear getting there! We fly out from Heathrow on the 5th so should hopefully be OK. Fingers crossed.

Not sure why these keep coming up. It depends on the airline/ class/ airports, so you have to check the airline's website. That's all there is to it. The policies change over time, and second-hand news here is not as good as the airline's site. Having said that...

If you're flying scheduled BA then it depends a bit on what class and where you're going. For cattle-class transatlantic from LHR you can now take one hold bag up to 23Kgs. Take a second and you're paying. They don't care if you call it a "board bag" or a "bag" or a "suitcase", it's all the same to them.

On internal US/ Canada flights ... from this season if you're flying about a bit in cattle class then I've found that it's best to fly with one hold bag (boards) and one carry-on, or you'll be hit by pretty much everyone for the second hold bag. Nothing should be over 23kgs. On the plus side they have relaxed some of the limits on carry-ons: so long as it's not physically large and you can lift it then they don't generally care.
