Morning all.
I live on a small island so only small planes fly to and from here. I'm gonna have to ring flybe to see if there planes they use here will take boardbags but i was just wondering if anyone else has encountered a problem where they have been unable to take their board with them or have to go through a long winded process to get it sorted ( worth it in the end ) Buying first board boots n bindings in breck this easter hopefully ! i assume they will have boardbags for sale out there ? |

From the flybe website:
Snowboards
Flybe accepts the carriage of Snowboards on a stand-by basis. Carriage is subject to space and weight availability. There is a charge of GBP28.00/EUR30.00/CHF48.00 per Snowboard per single sector of the flight confirmed (subject to available space)
All snowboard bags will be charged the rates listed above regardless of what is being carried within the bag.
Flybe are able to accept snowboards on the following aircraft:
Embraer 195 40 snowboards upto 2.5m in length Flybe. Bombardier Q400 10 snowboards upto 1.28m in length
Suggest you book on a flight unlikely to be full to ensure they can carry your board, although I imagine they are usually fine and are just covering their asses.
Also I am not sure what the point of carrying snowboards up to 128 is! Unless you're a small child or a midget that is not really a snowboard... although on the same aircraft they say they carry up to 10 pairs of skis to 5'6" in length so perhaps someone can't do maths/type. |

Yeah, there are loads of shops in Breck to buy gear in and most of them I saw last year had boardbags in. try Christy Sports for a starter, sure they had some low rollers last year (Dakine)
We're out there from April 5th too. Cant wait. |

QUOTE (inactive_16115 - 09/03/2010 @ 23:44) How big is this board you're intending to buy if 167 will be a squeeze?! 167.1 - that would do it I guess. It's a popular size and lots of board manufacturers are doing boards in that length these days. |

I'm 6ft n weigh 11 st, looking for a all mountain board so im thinking around the 160 mark should fit me. The thing is i dont know much about board bags.... are they tight fit to the baord or do they have extra room legnth wise which mite make them go over 167 ? I think i should just get away with it if im lucky >< |

Think 160 might be a bit long mate. I'm 14 stone and currently ride a 162 (but have just bought a 159). You should base your board size mainly on your weight. 155/156/157 might be closer to ideal for you for an all mountain board.
You said you're going to Breck:
My advice would be trial some boards before you buy one. You can hire boards from a lot of places down Park Avenue and Main Street and a lot of them will let you choose the demo boards from their entire range.
Only costs something like $40 for the full day.
Do some research, figure out what you fancy and spend $40 to try it for a day before you buy it. Last thing you want is to buy a board and find out you hate it. |

Yo everyone, thanks for feedback so far
Think i will try out different boards when i get there if i can - using the whitelines buyers guide mag to help me out with sizes...
basically need to find a boardbag that wll fit my board in and be under 1.67 metres.... how likely is this ? boardbags take the boots aswwell usually ? |

You can hire in Breck and try out the boards. As I said I know at least of Christy Sports who do it but there are others along Main Street and Park Avenue. Do a Google for board hire Breckenridge and have a look at the websites to see what shops let you hire whatever board you want so you don't have to traipse round them all (being a ski resort there are loads of hire shops). You might even be able to agree the hire with them before you go.
Where are you staying?
You'll easily get a back under 167cm and, given your weight, you wont need a board anywhere near that long anyway.
I currently ride a 162 and have a 165 Dakine Low Roller. It does have space for boots, but I always put the boots in my case as I find with boots in the low roller there isn't much room for anything else. If I put the boot sin the case I can get a ton of stuff in the board bag to wrap up teh board from damage. Just make sure you put something (I use those grey foam pipe warmer things) around teh edges so as not to rip your gear. |

I've got a 166 Burton wheely thing. It happily fitted everything I needed for 9 days away - 152 board & bindings, boots (size 8.5), clothes, hiking boots, toiletries, books, snow gear, kneepads etc, only thing that didn't fit was my helmet, and if I'd taken less books that'd have fitted too (although I'd have worried about damage which is why it went elsewhere). Weighed a ton and running through Torino train station with it was less than fun... but it all fitted and neither BA nor Easyjet complained about it.
Although it is MUCH easier to have a bag that'll just fit your board and maybe some clothes for padding, and then a separate backpack, this will cost you a lot more on flights. So long as you can travel light and don't have enormous feet, a decent sized 166 wheely should fit everything. |

I've always taken a case and a separate board bag (and my wife has done the same) as well asa carry on backpack and it's never cost us any more than if we had just taken the board bag.
You just have to do some research into the airlines first and fly with one that isn't charging at that particular time.
I've used United (2x normal cases at 23KG or 1 x Case and 1 x Board Bag) and BA (1 x Normal Case and 1 x Boardbag - though this will be the last year we get that with them).
Thats to North America BTW, where the OP is off to. I would agree it'll be different on flights to Europe, especially with the budget airlines, but when you're going transatlantic you will generally be in the same ballpark pricewise whoever you fly with so you just have to look a bit harder.
FYI - For BA, as long as you booked before 31st July 2009 you still get your 1 case + 1 board bag allowance for your 2010 travel date. |
