Taking measurements from Niseko Now, as of 16 January 2010 Hirafu is up to 8.3m of snowfall at village level so far this season.

The January snowfall is 3.9m and there's still another half to go

Taking measurements from Niseko Now, as of 30 January 2010 Hirafu is up to 10m of snowfall at village level so far this season.

Remember all the hoo ha about Whistler getting 5m in November? Well you won't hear too much about Niseko getting over 5m in a month because quite frankly it happens most winters. The January snowfall is 5.6m with one day to go

Taking measurements from Niseko Now, as of 01 March 2010 Hirafu is up to 13.1m of snowfall at village level so far this season.

The February snowfall was a decent 2.6m even with a week of no snow at the end of the month.

The 20cm that fell on St David's Day (today, the national day of Wales) could be the start of a massive March in the Niseko Resort Area.

Fingers crossed.

Based on my records for the past 4 seasons, January.

Most consistent , snowiest , but unfortunately the most expensive and busiest Well in the Niseko Resort Area at least. Other areas on Hokkaido no problem

January 2007 - 375 cm of new snow; 24 days with snow
January 2008 - 569 cm of new snow; 29 days with snow
January 2009 - 334 cm of new snow; 23 days with snow
January 2010 - 590 cm of new snow; 26 days with snow

It's a toss up.

Hokkaido in January will deliver the experience you see in the movies, but you'll be lucky to get any/many bluebird days for pics and views.

February is quieter with the exception of Chinese New Year week (but that doesn't always fall in February). Not as much snow - but that's relative:

February 2007 - 235 cm of new snow; 18 days with snow
February 2008 - 291 cm of new snow; 23 days with snow
February 2009 - 277 cm of new snow; 23 days with snow
February 2010 - 260 cm of new snow; 19 days with snow

March has less snow again but more sunny days.

Depends what you're looking for.

I've only skied on Hokkaido, but there's more than enough variety and challenge for me.

Nagano and Niigata on Honshu are more alpine but not as consistently powtastic as Hokkaido.

And outside of the Niseko Resort Area the prices are cheaper and the non-japanese visitation much less.

Thanks for the replys on japan Mike,it sounds awe, really!!
(I was wondering if more so than canada BC? revelstoke)
I would be happy anywhere with fresh, but it sounds, as good as you can get anywhere, with trees .
I did hear the aussies were in,decades ago.
Will have to read some more of your adventures as the german feb 17th one was very interesting, not initially my choice of place but as you say, just great too be in the mountains.
Cheers

Taking measurements from Niseko Now, as of 14 March 2010 Hirafu has hit its 'average' with snowfall at village level of 14.1m so far this season.

A metre has fallen in the first two weeks of March, with more forecast.

A 15m winter is a distinct possibility
